I'd check with your doctor about still hurting after the surgery. I had mine done in 07 and only have pain when it rains. Good luck!

I had my hip done 3 years ago- and I'm still in a lot of pain. I can't run, I can barely walk at times (depends on the weather or my level of activity). So I swim, lift weights and ride my bike in season. I'm losing weight, down 55 so far, and hoping that it will take pressure off my hip and the pain will cease. So far, it still hurts like h#)$!%

The Dr gave me permission for the stationary bike and eliptical after my first visit after surgery. But was just to start at 5 minute intervals and work up.

It was probably a good year before I bought my bike. I know I did the stationary bike at the PT office when I had my surgery. I felt it did give me the strengthening I needed,

I had my surgery during the summer (actually on the 1st day of summer to be exact). If I had a pool, I would have been in it! I walked then the following year I did some biking.

I am 10 weeks post op and I have been going to Physio once every 2 weeks. She spends about an hour and a half with me. She always sees how much movement I have since the last time, she gives me more excercises to do at home, and she makes me workout on some of the equipment they have in their department. At home I have been lifting small weights, keeping up with my home excercises and started walking.

The best thing I have done for more mobility is gone to the local swimming pool. Before surgery swimming was one of the only things I could do to get my heartrate up. So now I walk back and forth in the middle sized pool. Frontwords, backwards and sideways. I also go up and down the stairs. Physio said the pool is one of the best things I can be doing! I thought i would share what my rehab has been like.

When I was in the hospital I saw the PT 3 X's a day( first time about 4 hrs. after the operation) and also OT to make sure I was able to get dressed ,get into and out of the shower/tub, in and out of a car..I was only in the hospital for a few days and then sent home.
The nurse coordinator called a week after I had been home to see if everything was still OK and if I had any questions at all.I also could call her if I needed anything or had any trouble.I also had a VON stop in to check the dressing after I was home, but that was fine no problem at all.

I had pt in the hospital, which was just getting up and walking with a walker. Then I stayed at a nursing facility for 10 days and they had me doing pt 2 x day. Then I stayed at my mom's for about 10 days and had a pt come to the apt 2x/week. After that I had pt at a facility a couple of times per week. They had me doing upper body and lower body exercises.

I agree with the just keep moving part!! It's amazing to me how different all of the Dr's are. I had no formal PT, other than group pt while still in the hospital. Was then just sent home with the sheet of paper. Everyone I talked too all said the same so thought it was normal. I just would have like a little more direction like you all talk about.

I had PT for the first few weeks after I was home then I went back after 6 weeks and she just made sure I doing exercises to strengthen my leg. After I was not walking with a limp the she cut me lose.(at the clinic)
The PT at the doctors said I was doing well (2.5 months)and I could walk and do treadmill , elliptical, stationary bike, weights but if I felt pain then stop.I had to wait until for 22-25 weeks to be able to swing a golf club because of the turning motion.
They told me to stretch everyday.
I am now walking and hiking and itching to get out and golf..........I have tried some dancing but I have not had too much stiffness and discomfort.
Give the Doctor 's office a call and see what they say.I have a list that was given to me when I left the hospital and low impact aerobics,X country skiing, and down hill are allowed if you have had experience.
Everyone is different and we all heal and get back on our feet at a different pace.I hope you are able to get back to zumba.

Good morning!

There are just different theories on PT vs Walking after THR. My prob is inactivity, which is changing now that I'm working. My spinal stenosis is painful and limits some movements but I am now outside before and after work doing a little yardwork. I AM getting a bit more limber. I'll continue to be more active, stretch my limitations and lose the gained weight, AGAIN.

Age and wear and tear have a lot to do with life but I'll pass on the rocker for now. :)

Have an awesome blessed week!

What's wrong with no therapy? All i had was 3 weeks 2x a week and that's it. I now work full time on my feet at wendy's, i go to the gym doing 10 miles on the upright bike in 30 minutes, tons of heavy strength lifting...on my non working days i spend over 2 hours in the gym...then i still have to do all my home and mommy duties. I don't think PT is all that terribly important, but MOVING is...don't just sit and expect to recover, you have to do stuff.

Your one leg maybe a little shorter or longer than the other. I know mine are and tell especially if I am standing straight and not leaning more on one leg or the other. It doesn't bother me when I walk. I still get ocassionally stiff in my surgery hip.

Good morning all.

I was sent to therapy, with orders that al I needed was the walking to and from the therapy room and "going home" exercises of walking up and down steps, getting in and out of a car and getting in and our of the bath tub. I was released to go home in 2 days and had no probs at home.

I was 1 yr with my right Dec 21st and will have my 1yr on the left, Apr 5th. As good as we feel each day, as the months go by, we realize how much better we are getting. I think THR's are slow to heal, but make our lives so much better than before them. My right is as though I never had surgery, but my left is a little off, so I have a bit of a limp. I don't care since.the pain is gone and I don't take any ibuprophen. And as I do more exercise it may go away.

I would love to do zumba. I think if you did do it you will just have to modify some of the movements. I am now recovering from abdominal surgery, so it will be a while before I do anything like that!

I went to PT recently for an ankle issue, and they said that they hardly ever get hip patients...that most of their replacement patients are knees, so i don't think it's *that* big of a deal for no therapy. I mean, i'm 7 months out from one hip, and 5 from the other and today I rode on the bike at the gym and did 9 miles in 30 minutes. I'm lifting weights, and i have no hitches in the hips at all. I really think that it's all in how each individual persons body heals.

I cannot believe your doctors did not send you to therapy. I asked about it because I wanted to be moving around as soon as possible. I had PT the day after surgery. Walking is the best exercise for now. I did biking the following year and it helped a lot. There are plenty of upper body exercises listed on Spark that you can do. Ask about going to physical therapy or call and make an appt yourself to make sure you are doing exercises correctly. Take it easy and don't over do it as Bev said, you do have a lot of healing to do!

Wilma if it makes you feel any better...neither was i! I asked my surgeon (who's amazing) and he was like "for what?" lol So yea, don't worry about that...I'm doing amazing with no therapy and actually better than people i know who DID go to therapy so it's all in how you heal!

I'm 7 months out from my RTHR and 5 months out from my LTHR. I just started at the gym...i do bike, elliptical, and treadmill (on slow but high incline). I'm also doing circuits on the weight machines and it feels SOOOO good. Sadly I'm not allowed to do leg presses but i hope that changes sometime, but i don't feel like my legs are getting as much as the arms...guess i need to up my weights on them lol

Hi,

Your best exercise now is walking. You could also get weights for your arms for all around exercise. Do the exercise that your therapist taught you. At 4 months, you still have some healing to do, so still be a little careful at bending or twisting. I walked a lot and that really got me going

I'd love to hear from everyone what type of aerobic and strength traning that they are doing now. I'm four months out from my surgery and not finding the Dr very helpful other than he said I can bike, and use the eliptical trainer. Thanks all!
