I love nutritional yeast. I mix it in with quinoa or brown rice. It has kind of a cheesy flavor, plus it's so good for you!

Jane, if you have a bad response to beets then this would definitely NOT be the way to get your b-vitamins! Sorry to hear you have a problem with beets, I have one with gluten, so you know you have my sympathies!

Flake emoticon , I have trouble eating beets. How much would that affect the yeast? I can drink V8 Juice once in awhile but often times end up with a stomach ache. emoticon I don't want to buy something that I cannot use.

This tip's from my sister... she tried it waaay before I ever did.

Sure, I'd heard about "Nutritional" (or Brewer's) Yeast forever...
but there's a BIG diff between plunking your money down and actually buying it AND eating it.... and thinking "O that sounds nice and healthy, I'll have to try that someday".

Yesterday was that day, spurred on by my local Sprout's 25% off Weekly Special sale. Nothing like a deal to get me motivated!

Truthfully... I was expecting the taste to be overwhelmingly hideous.
I bought the largest size, anyway.

But no, its has a delicious light flavor which blends seamlessly with a variety of savory foods. I've been sprinkling it on my salads, along with the juice of half a lemon , to provide a savory umami taste, a bit of saltiness.

Sis uses it on popcorn.

I think it would be delicious stirrrd into soups, table side, to preserve the complement of heat sensitive vitamin B's this powerhouse food contains.

Or simply mixed with some hot water, to provide a nutrient dense, low calorie snack... or as a savory rather than a sweet appetizer to a meal, to blunt overindulgence.

The brand I tried, KAL, tastes like a cross between chicken stock and miso paste.
I'll post a full nutrient profile for the Spark Tracker for those who are sampling the KAL brand. Spark has Red Star, the nutrient profile may be different, this will give you more choice.

If you think you'd like in, here's the basics.

There are two kinds of Brewers or Nutritional Yeast, but since the names are often used interchangeably, you've really got to read the label to find out which one you've got.

"Brewer's" is supposed to be a bit bitter and is the end product of the brewing process as the name implies. If you are gluten intolerant, it may be wise to avoid this one, in case the brew was beer, which contains hops, which contains gluten, OY!

"Nutritional" is grown on sugar beet molasses. This is the one that I chose. The KAL brand uses non-GMO beet molasses, which is a good thing.

It comes in two forms... flake (which is what I got.. and thank you for not saying "wellll if the shoe fits..." ) and a powder.

These yeasts are a nutritional power house in food form, full of B vitamins and a good dose of Selenium, which we need for thyroid hormone conversion. AND support your adrenals.
