I met a great nutritionist through my local YMCA and she was a font of knowledge, but one thing she said really stuck with me. At every meal try to have plants and protein. I don't always manage this, but it has definitely stuck with me. She said that if you have to open a cabinet to get your snack, then it's not good for you. She's a big proponent of fresh (not processed) foods, so if it's in the fridge it's probably better for you than if it's in a box or can. I'm sure that there are exceptions to these rules, but as a general rule it's probably a good one.
Sometimes I think if I had time to hit the local farmers market every day on my way home that would be enough to help me lose 50 pounds. I LOVE all the fresh veggies & fruite, but I always overbuy, then most of it goes bad before I even get to it. Maybe I just love the IDEA of the fresh fruits & veggies... still, something to think about. We're having salmon and brown rice for dinner tonight (hubby is cooking) maybe I'll hit the market on my way home and find some nice asparagus or brocolli and salad fixings to go along with it. Yummy!
