I love, love, love my Garmin 405...I can't believe it took me so LONG to break down and get one. It provides me with such great feedback that I truly wonder why I didn't jump at the opportunity sooner. Hope everyone is enjoying theirs.

HAPPY RUNNING!

I ordered a 405 and can't wait for it to arrive! It shipped today. I had been planning to get a 305, but when I saw the 405, I couldn't help myself. I'm glad some of you have had positive experiences with it.

I think that I just didn't realize that I had to use the training center. It was raining this morning, but I will try and later and see what I can figure out. I guess that it just takes time to learn everything.

My data is in my training center under my programs. Click on Garmin then on training center then user. Did you set up your user profile?

I got through all those steps, but I still don't see my data. AHHH. Frustrating. I also have the same kind of icon on my desktop, but it won't open. I got it downloaded and I even downloaded the training center, but I haven't tried it yet.

Did you download the software from Garmin.com/forerunner405? If you did, did you pair your forerunner with your computer? You must download the software before pairing...plug the USB ANT stick into your USB port...then bring you forerunner within 3 meters of your computer (this is page 8 and 9 of your manual)...if you did steps 3 and 4, once you transfer your information the ANT agent automatically transfers the data. On my computer there is a little ant looking (or a weird mickey mouse) character in the lower right hand portion of my screen (to the left of the time). Just click on that and your data should be there...maybe someone else might have a clue if this doesn't work.

Hope this helps!

I ran with it today too! I made the mistake of running at about 11 and now I have a tan line from it. I haven't had a chance to put the info back into the computer. I did have some issues the trees though.

I went ahead and got a 405 yesterday too, but I plugged it into my computer last night. I guess my computer didn't charge it because this morning I got up ready to run and it was still dead. Oh well I guess, it's charging now. Just the longer that it charges, the hotter and hotter it's getting.

I received my Garmin 405 yesterday afternoon and so far so good...haven't taken it out on a run yet (that will be with my running class tomorrow) so I will let you know how it goes. I got the light green colored one and LOVE that the monitor is not so big as the previous models, that being said the toggle deal seems to be a little sensitive or maybe that is my eagerness to put it to the test emoticon

I order the 305 on the suggestion of two friends and all the posts on various running threads!!! Mine should arrive on Tuesday so I will let you know what I think!!! I bought the Nike+ in March and am sort of disappointed with it!!! I'm sure the issues is just one of proper calibration but with the Garmin I won't have to worry about that!!!

Good luck on whatever decision you make!!!

So, I have been doing research on the Nike + and I didn't even know about Garmin until I started doing that. Now, I don't really have any desire to get the Nike +. What I really want is a Garmin. My DH didn't get me a birthday present in March because we were in the middle of buying a new house in moving, but because of that he told me that we could go get a Garmin today. YEAH!!! Now, I have the problem of which one to get. I know that I want it to tell me time, distance, pace and calories burned. I also know that I will alternate between running and walking so I don't want to have to calibrate it. I've read this entire post and basically realized that everyone loves the one that they have. That is really great and makes me want to buy one but doesn't tell me which one to buy.

So, suggestions??

Hey Guys,

I am getting my Garmin 405 today (UPS is to deliver to my home between 4:30 and 5:30) and I can't wait. The hubby bought it for me for our 25th wedding anniversary present. I am so excited and can't wait to put it to the test!

Does anyone have the foot pod? I'm finding that I run on the treadmill about once or twice a week. The Garmin records my time and HR but not distance.

I was wondering if it's a good addition or just a pain to use.

i have a 205. the 301 or 305 have hr monitors whereas the 201 or 205 do not. it does what i need it to do. it tracks my speed/distance. i am personally not to focused on hr myself and if i was going to do that i would probably get a separate polar f6.

EXCITING!!
SO glad this thread exists.
I've been casually jogging for a few years now (I've done a slew of 5ks and a handful of 10s) and I'm finally taking the plunge and training for my first half marathon.
And I'd LOVE a Garmin to track my progress (but most importantly for me, track my distance-- I tend to go by time alone... or else I'll mapquest my route to get a rough estimate of how far I've gone)

SO!
Seems like there are a bunch of models out there, and I'm wondering which might work best for me...

Ideally, I'd love something that's small, one piece (i.e. just a watch instead of a band around my chest or something!), and is super simple to understand...

I'm not sure if they've discontinued certain models (or numbers?) over the years, but I'd really love to get your input on what has worked best for you!

Thanks!
(And Happy Running!)

I'm a beginner, so I am casually looking into a 305. I really like the look and like that it's fairly big so I don't have to really LOOK at it, you just have to glance.

I will buy one after I finish my first 5K as a reward. I have a tendency to start things on a whim and not follow through, so I don't want to make the investment until I'm sure this is something I'm going to do consistently. So far I love it, though! :)

I've run with my 405 a couple of times now. I love it! Especially the wireless synch. It gets a signal VERY quickly and its much more comfortable. I don't do anything advanced, mainly just use it to track distance and speed. The first time I used it I realized for me, I need to lock the bezel as I hit that instead of the stop button at the end. I'm glad I have it and really like that I can use it as a watch when my run is over (for instance at a race).

Folgore - The 405 is much smaller and is also supposed to get a satellite link much quicker. It also transfers your data to your computer wirelessly. If you go on the Garmin site or REI site, you can check the boxes next to each model and compare them.

The 205 is 2.72 ounces and costs $124 and the 405 is 2.11 ounces and costs $299.

Just curious, what is the 405 able to do that the 305 can't? What are the major improvements? All I've heard is that it's somewhat smaller than the 305.

2. Score 270+ on Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT)

I just read via one of the fitness site that Garmin has pushed the release date to July 2008...still many vendors are taking pre-orders, BUT no one is for sure how many each store will receive. Garmin is taking a lot of heat from their slow release, especially with all the publicity. I will see if I can locate that link (I just read it last week).

For those interested in the 405, its available from REI now but there is still a wait from all other vendors. I just ordered one from REI and it will be here about 7 May, so only about 10 days. My wonderful DH is getting it for me for mother's day!!! I'll give you all a report when I get it and start using it.

This is the first time I've seen this thread and have found some really useful info already!

Tricotine, I have the exact same problem that you're having. I just bought the 305 and received it, oh about a week ago now...got around to installing the software for the Training Center this weekend, and have been completely unable to upload any info from my last run.

Keeps saying "there's a problem communicating with the device." I've gotten the software update for TC, the driver update for the GPS, and it still isn't working.

I don't get it, because the first time I attached the 305 to my computer, it uploaded all of my previous run data automatically. Now I can't get it to load my last run.

Hi All,

Just read through some of your postings. It too love my Garmins. Yes, I have a few of them! The Forerunners are great! from 201s, 301 and now the 205.

these Garmins are waterproof. You can swim in them! I've ask this question when Garmin was at one of the Marathon expos.

There is a way to change your HR to the big screen. It's in 1 of the 3 screens that you customize. You have to set it up in 1 of the setting screens.

Happy running!

Hi, Shampers! I just got a Forerunner 305 last week and it really has put a "spark" in my running! Being able to glance down and see my pace as well as distance really has motivated me to go faster. (I've always been a bit anal about being accurate regarding pace and distance covered, so this gadget was made for me! emoticon )

A question for those who've had their Garmin's for awhile: How do you enlarge the Heart Monitor reading on the Garmin? In the main screen, it's so small I actually have difficulty reading it. I realize this is purely a secondary feature on the Garmin, but being a longtime Polar HRM user, I do like to be able to check my Heart rate occasionally to see if I'm pushing things too hard or too lightly.

The Garmen gadget is quite expensive but it sounds fabulous. I'd really like one. It works out the mileage when you run and how many minutes you have run per mile. It has to be invaluable to people who want to improve on their performance. Has anyone else found it extremely useful?

Yes- I'm usually a gadget girl- but slowed down on purchasing after getting a new iPod last year. I haven't really looked at GPS systems for runners up until I saw a review of the Garmin 405. I guess I'm saving up for it now! emoticon That will be my reward for myself at some point this year!

No but I have the 305 and love it although I tend when I'm planing on hitting the lap button press the stat/stop button instead....the buttons are too close, but thats my only complaint. I use it cycling & running and just got a waterproof bag yesterday so plan on using it swimming when I get out in the sea next month. Its a brilliant piece of equipment

Check the Garmin website site for the latest software versions. The Webupdater program can do that for you.

www8.garmin.com/products/webu
pdater/

The little watch mount interface can be quirky. You may have to fiddle with that and the cable sometimes. Lastly, make sure the contacts are clean on the watch and interface. A pencil eraser can be used to clean them.

Thanks for the info, Jen! I will check Sport Tracks.

I am using "Motion Based" which is also free and that works when it comes to transfer my workouts from my device to the website.

But when I try to transfer my data from my device into "Training Center" (the CD software that came with the Garmin and that I have installed into my computer) it doesn't work... emoticon

It only worked once, and then... no more!

As Technical Service suggested the problem certainly comes from my computer, but WHAT IS IT and HOW CAN I FIX IT, that is still a big mystery... LOL

I love my Garmin 305, even though I haven't figured out all its features yet.

I have troubleshoting with sync my workout into my computer though. I have contacted Training Center Technical Service and they told me that my computer overprotecting spyware was causing the problem.

On their recommendation, I have unchecked the "open Training Center when I connect my Garmin to the computer" setting but it still doesn't work...

Anybody has the same problem?

wow, that 405 is pretty and shiny. i wonder how long before my 305 self-destructs?

i really like my 305. i get the feeling of cycling without my helmet if i run without it (which i never do).

I have the 301 garmin and when I use to strap the heart monitor belt on the garmin would pick up the signal...but there is a setting where than can be disabled...so I would suggest you look it up in your owners manual.

then go see if it needs to be enabled.

I don't use my heart monitor anymore...I lost the strap on a run a while back. the darn thing wasn't accurate anyway...registering 220 beats before I even left the door to start my run. that was the reason I had taken it off during the run. While it was in my hand it was still registering 220 beats.

I put the strap in my hat...hat was in my hand...I went back to look for it but never found it.

Did you have it set to the indoor mode? Was the heart sign flashing? Unless you have the foot pod it will not measure distance. I tend to use my G305 for outside and a polar HRM for indoors (much smaller). Only disavantage is not having all my miles / data in one place.

I'm glad to see this thread is still alive and kicking!

So I've been using my 305 for about 4 weeks now, but only last night did I attempt to use the HRM. And it didn't work!!! Here's what I did... Wet the two sensors, strapped the HRM around my chest (right under the boobs, below the sports bra), turned on the Garmin and started running on my treadmill... It didnt do anything! I kept looking and looking for the little icon to register a number instead of leaving a blank spot. But it never happened.

What went wrong?

Wow. That's looks great. Whilst my 305 has been the best bit of kit I've ever bought, that looks a great improvement. It would be great if it allowed indoor use also. PH

Heads up, all you gadget-lovers! Garmin showed off its latest toy at CES and it looks interesting, even though I'm devoted to my Forerunner 205. It's the 405 and its got an iPod-like touch-sensitive bezel. Check out the video:

I believe the maximum speed is just that, it's the fastest you actually went. When I run with my garmin I have it set so it give me my pace (not speed) just my preference. anyway it aways gives me my fastest mile...last time it was something like 8:28. Now I don't run that fast at all but some place in my 8 miles run I did cover a mile at that pace. (I even find that head to believe)

It's very possible that if you started a running interval going down hill that for a brief point in time your 'fastest' pace was 12km/h.

Be proud...I think you did it.

no, I am sure. I can verify with my garmin training center. At the end of the run, when I load it in the training center, it says maximum speed : 12km/h.

And yes, I am running 6 minutes and walking 2 minutes. And it says I run at 7.5km/h and I have verified that with the treadmill at the gym. It is the right speed.

I tought the same thing, that it was the pace by minute. That is why I double checked. Maybe it is the pace by minute and then when it loads on the pc, that is where it "convert" to 12km/h.
Anyway, thanks all for your help.

Brigitte

That sounds right Gail if it's on pace mode rather than speed mode.

Are you sure it's not telling you that you are walking a 12 minute km? (and not km/hrs)

that would be very possible.

are you running 6 and walking 2. i find when i switch from running to walking it sometimes takes a while for the speed to go up to about the right pace. sometimes almost a minute.

that is quite fast though. how fast is it saying you are running?
