I try to eat a few more carbs the day before, nothing crazy but it depends on the distance. The morning of my long run, protien! I eat egg whites, easy to eat and it doesn't weigh in your stomach like some foods can. On the long runs that and the gels keep me full.

John, I also get hungry on my long runs... Sometimes it doesn't help that on certain mornings, I can smell bacon being fried. That always causes a slight rumble in my tummy to occur, LOL.

I recently tried a product that I think you'll like, or at least find interesting. It's the Honey Stinger Waffle, and they really hit the spot when I ran my trail half a few weeks ago.

If you buy the right kind of bagels, you can wear them on your wrists like bracelets. Or maybe you can hang one from your neck like Flava Flav's clock.

I can eat bacon and eggs before a long run and be fine on my run. From what I understand the food you eat the morning of your run is not what fuels your run. So for sure if you are lacking energy then you need to better prepare the day before.

But if you are just plain old hungry then you need something before your run that will hold you longer so you don't feel hungry while you run.

If your belly is growing a gu will not stop that. Of your struggling mentally or if your muscles are tiring then gu may help.

And maybe running with a bagel is really all you need.

John, I totally agree with Carolyn's suggestion about eating plenty of carbs the day before your long run. For me, the key to a successful long run is what I eat and drink the day before the run more than anything I do the day of.

I think it depends on the protein. For me, I can't eat yogurt or cheese within a couple of hours before exercising, but an egg is okay.

Very interesting. I rarely feel hungry while exercising and it's a feeling of being tired that drives me to fuel during a run.

John my suggestion to you is to add protien to your breakfast (like an egg). It just might keep the hunger pings away longer.

You're also becoming a bit depleted overnight. You can try eating a bagel or bowl of cereal before going to bed tonight. That might help, too.

Sounds like your body is carb depleted.

How long do you wait before you start to take the gels on your long run, and how often do you take them? Are these long runs in the morning? if so, are you eating enought carbs the night before? A solution might be to tear up some bagels and bring them with you. When I was doing my really long runs of 18, 20 and 22 miles, I had to have more than just gels mostly because of the boredom of eating the same thing for 4 hours. I would bring chomps, break up granola bars, and also stop by the gas station on my route and get a small bag of crackers or pretzels.

emoticon Im not alone when it happens Im on a group long run and I start saying Im hungry and I hear "take a gel, If youre hungry thats too late you should take one before you get hungry"

I take a gel but Im still hungry, I think running is the culprit to long run hunger bagels bagels bagels
Im wondering if I should take a bagel with me when I run my first Marathon?

John, you have to get help fast!! it is the dreaded bagel-itist, hopefully you caught it early enough and a few months of rehab will cure you. good luck John and stay strong, we are all pulling for you buddy.
If you are not buying any of that then I have no Idea other then you like bagels and when you are alone to long your mind goes to its happy place and that involves bagels.

lately maybe because I'm running longer distances than I've ever have before following a marathon running program. I get hungry for bagels?? this never happened before, and yes I do leave home eating some breakfast oatmeal & blueberries honey like I always have 1 hour before my long run. I also take gels with me, I carry 3 to 4 gels, I wear a fuel belt with Gu electrolyte water.

any ideas or suggestions, has this happened to you?
thanks
