Although you can tone certain muscles, you can not burn fat in specific areas.
Try out a couple of different ways to time your meals and see what makes you comfortable. I might stop a workout because of my hunger so i prefer to workout after a light meal or snack to prevent cutting my workout short. However, for other people that fullness might be uncomfortable while exercising.
the best advice i can give you is to not try to get into exact guidelines or "best ways" or "more efficient" methods just yet. The best way is the one that works for you, otherwise you'll lose motivation.
