Congrats on going to the gym. It is very addicting once you get over the initial workout hurdles of muscle pains / growth. I find that a small healthy snack and some water works best for me before a workout. I also sip on water throughout the workout. It is usually a few hours after working out before I'm hungry again. Just find what works best for you and it will make the whole process much more enjoyable and exciting.

Everyone's body reacts different and you have to find out what works best for you. I have looked on line and asked a trainer about when to exercise and what to eat. The online and the trainers both stated that cardio is most effective in the morning before breakfast. But if you do not have time to do it then.. they say doing cardio anytime of the day is better than no cardio! =) So I will usually do my cardio 30 to 60 minutes in the morning before breakfast and strength training in the afternoon. I will eat a small meal 45min to an hour before strength training. My small meal consists of a banana or apple and a table spoon of nut butter, I like almond. Or a protein bar. I have an issue with feeling sick or getting sick if I try to eat a full meal before a workout. Take your time in between sets as you strength train. If you move to quickly through them it could cause you to feel ill. I learned this the hard way...
Consistency is the key. Just keep on and it will pay off. Just remember that you CAN DO IT! Don't listen if your mind try's to tell you otherwise! Be blessed!

Although you can tone certain muscles, you can not burn fat in specific areas.
Try out a couple of different ways to time your meals and see what makes you comfortable. I might stop a workout because of my hunger so i prefer to workout after a light meal or snack to prevent cutting my workout short. However, for other people that fullness might be uncomfortable while exercising.
the best advice i can give you is to not try to get into exact guidelines or "best ways" or "more efficient" methods just yet. The best way is the one that works for you, otherwise you'll lose motivation.
