Love the Newhart clip--reminds me of a quote I read...

Take your life in your own hands and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame!

I agree with my teammate who talks about Ellen and the lack of use of vulgarity and meanness to be funny. She is also one of my favorites

That was a great way to start the day...Thank you!

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Thanks, Lynne. I've never seen the tv show and her name is unfamiliar, but that doesn't mean I haven't seen her somewhere. Then, again, so many people look familiar and I discover there's no reason for that. In fact, it turns out I'm confusing them with others.

The woman in the skit is Maureen "Mo" Ann Collins (born July 7, 1965). She is an American actress and comedian, perhaps best known for being a member of the ensemble on FOX's sketch comedy series MADtv. She became well known for several characters during her time on the show.

They're very different from each other, but you mention something I respect in Ellen de Generes. Not only does she not resort to vulgarity, but her humor is never unkind or mean-spirited. So much of what is accepted as humor or comedy is both because meanness is easy, not to mention cheap.

I don't mind a four-letter word as long as it serves a purpose. It rarely does, though. Someone who has a sense of language and what a glorious thing it is can express so much more without the expletives.

Does anyone recognize the woman/patient? She seems familiar from long ago, but I can't place her.

Laurie

(Hm, shall I delete this post and just enjoy Newhart and the skit on their own terms?)

I loved it!!! Bob Newhart is so refreshing. It's hard to find a good comedian these days who doesn't have to swear or be vulgar.

No Karen here, Lynne. But I won't tell.

Apart from the Newhart ending that touches on cruel, sometimes a firm "Stop it!" makes all the difference. We often enough recognize our self-defeating, pointless and otherways futile patterns.
