I am interested in buying a running "gadget" but do not know which would be the best fit. Also looking for ideas.

I have a 210 but it started to act up. It would keep time, claim to still be linked to the satellite but my distance would stop accumulating. Not always. Not predictably. But is is a nice looking sportswatch.

So I got a 310XT and while it feels like I am carrying a laptop on my wrist and I can't really wear it as a watch, it give me tons of data. I really like that.

Some days, just for S&G's I wear both. And track with Runkeeper. Why? 'Cuz I can.

I use the 310XT and love it. I actually don't do anything but run (yet, anyway), so it's probably overkill, but it's a great watch.

Perryr – I have only used Garmin. I had a low end Reebok HRM that I could swim in as well but once you change the battery, it loses that function. It only did time and HR. I wanted distance and so my first serious hardware was the Garmin 305. It wasn’t the latest model but for what I wanted, it worked well.

I still have my strap from the Garmin 305 that can be used with any other Garmin. I am not against any other brand (I do like Polar) but it was easier to stay with Garmin since learning the features would be that much easier.

910xt but might be overkill for a beginner.

I had the 405 for a little over 3 years before it started getting squirrely in behaviour - that seems to be the timeline for that. (I had changed out the plastic wristband with a homemade nylon/velcro number that solved some of the water issues).

I upgraded to the 610 at that point. It has some issues charging - the charging points get a little corroded (I sweat buckets), so sometimes they need cleaning first.

Honestly, I don't think I use 50% of the features on either model. So find what tracks the info you need, in the environment you need, and get that. My 2 cents... ;)

Any reason it has to be Garmin?

I have a 405 that I got used on Ebay. The only thing I don't like about it is that when it gets wet from sweat or rain, it doesn't work right. It still seems to track your run accurately, but you can't read it, it just shows the time. Not much you can do about the rain, but I have found wearing a thin wrist band under it or taking it off briefly to dry under it solves the problem...can be a pain in the hot summer.. Does not do it under normal sweat conditions, but does on a hot, humid summer day. Tracks pace, distance, elevation, HR, calories, grade, cadence, etc

Which Garmin do you run with?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 that literally fell apart on my wrist a couple weeks ago. I had it for a little over 3 years. Garmin offered to replace it with a refurbished unit for $80 or put that towards a new unit.

I would like to upgrade but having a hard time deciding what to get. I consider myself a novice athlete. Trying to lose weight through triathlon training. Running is my preferred discipline.

For running, I like to track my HR, distance and pace.
My hybrid bike already has its own equipment to track speed, distance and cadence.
For swimming, I just want to be able to swim the distance in a certain amount of time. Tow-fold goal, first to swim the distance of 1 mile, then be able to swim that mile in a certain amount of time.

Any recommendation as to which product would be best?
I was leaning towards the 310xt but a lot of people keep saying to get the 910xt. Its a pricey item.
