Thanks for all of the input everyone - there are more options than I imagined. I'll do a little experimenting now to see what works best.

I got a set of Yaktrax for my husband's parents last year and they're around $20 for the Pro.

Salty, thanks for the heads up on being extra alert. Believe me, I'm all about it. One of the coaches in our school district was out running and lost his life last fall when he was hit by a car. It's scary.

You bet. The YT Pro are on there so well that i leave them on an older pair of shoes for the winter. They will not fly off your shoes at all.

Thanks Laurie, I've wondered about the Yaktrax Pro. I just have the yaktrax personal/walking model and they've been great. If anything happens to the ones I have i might try the Pro.

I had heard/seen Yaxtrax come off during races so I opted to buy trail shoes. They act like 4-wheel drive - it doesn't guarantee you don't slip but gives you a chance to feel the ice and start avoiding it.

I'll probably try some of the other more stable options in the future too.

The winter spikes I linked below range between 14 and 21 dollars roughly.

Some folks screw short screws in to an older pair of running shoes and swear by that. MUCH cheaper.

I have a pair of Yak Tracks, but they really do not grip well for me on ice. I bought a pair of micro spikes. They are a bit pricey at $60, but well worth the month. I have walked up hill on ice and never slip with them.

I don't like yaktraks unless I wear heavy boots because I can feel them through my shoes and they change my gait. My preferred option is winter spikes that attach to your shoes via a rubber frame. They fit on any of my shoes ranging from minimalist water shoes to heavy boots. Traction is great even on ice (where I would not trust yaktraks) The spikes are even replaceable. Here is a link:

I have the YakTrax Pro and we have a love/hate relationship only because I hate snow. The YT work the best on a snow plowed street and work pretty slick (not in icy terms). You do need to be mindful of what may be under that snow and watch what you are doing. I have run 8 miles in YK so it is very doable. I am thinking with trail shoes the tread would pack with snow. I have not had that problem with YT. I do however feel YT are more tiring but sure beats the treadmill. Just layer up, put on your YT and head out the door!

I can't comment on trail shoes but I can on yak trax. They're really great in snow and packed snow. They click clack on pavement and can wear out if you have to run on pavement a lot, which happens when streets are partially covered. But I have really been able to enjoy running on covered roads now that I wear yak trax. They really make all the difference. Of course, drivers don't expect to see runners in these conditions so you need to be extra vigilant.

Any input on wearing trail shoes in the snow versus using Yaktrax? I have a great pair of trail shoes, but have never used them in snow.

I suppose I could try this out myself, but was interested in what others are doing.
