Freedom's Run looked the most attractive initially; however, there are now a bunch of minor reasons that add up to a not-so-good experience: 1) Forecast is for rain this weekend. (One of the benefits of choosing races at the last minute is the ability to factor in the forecast.) 2) To avoid going through shuttered national parks, they came up with a new course that is an out-and-back, so I'd be seeing the same scenery twice. 3) They moved the start of the marathon so that it is now the same place as the HM and an hour earlier so all the HMers are going to have difficulty finding parking (or will have to come 2 hours early!)
The marathoners are even more upset because the new course is two loops of the HM course; so the marathoners will be seeing the same scenery 4 times! A lot of them are pretty unhappy about that and so the race is offering deferrals and letting people switch to the HM mid-race. I never heard of anything like that before!
Now the Gettysburg HM is looking more attractive despite the significantly higher price. ($50 vs $75) It's also just a HM (no M). Freedom's Run is a combo HM and M and my experience is that in such combos, the HMers aren't treated as well.

I'm shopping for a HM for the next two weekends here in the DC-MD-VA-PA area and came up with these three. (With so many races refusing refunds, transfers, and deferrals, I rarely sign up for races more than a week or two in advance.) All are about an hour's drive.
Freedom's Run HM - I'm leaning toward this one. Just $50, even at this late date. Only thing that concerns me is that they've announced a new course to avoid national park closures and it sounds like it must be a compromise because they're permitting deferrals just for people who are unhappy with the new course.
Gettysburg HM - Their website and facebook page don't explain if the gov shutdown is a problem or how they'll handle it.Ugh. (Their online presence is rather lacking in a lot of details. Their race results in particular are crappy. I figure this is not a sign for the rest.) Plus, it's $75. Unclear why this race is so much more expensive.
Heritage HM - This one is the most convenient to me and sounds like a very-well organized race. 12 water stops for an HM?! Restaurant food at the end. And just $50 including shirts and medals. Only reason I put this in last place is that the course is flat. I know people who love flat courses but that's just not my thing. (Plus the name sucks, lol.)
