SARISKYJ,
There are many times when we perceive ourselves to be out of control-food is the greatest source of comfort. I am right there with you. I am an emotional eater. Sometimes, I simply have to give in to the urge, and attempt to make the best choices I can. There are other ways I have used to delay the feeling that I just must eat. However, sometimes fighting too much makes it worse. This is a journey of a lifetime, if we make good choices most of the time we will get to where we want to be. Believe it or not, those hunger urges can be controlled, or contained. Not easy, At least not for me. However, you are always the one in control, and if you believe that eating isn't the best stress management tool, you will find another. Be patient with yourself. It does take time. Celebrate each time you don't eat-don't let those feelings of I "can't take over because YOU CAN! emoticon emoticon

The insight of this team is fantastic! The ability to recognize stress is the first step. Each and every comment is a good reminder and provides different perspectives in recognizing that something is out of balance.
Nell, has detailed her experience of different times when stress becomes an issue. ZUCCHINIQUEEN appears to have the response many of us do and eat as a result of emotions. Irene, boredom often results in stress eating.
Nancy, Refocusing the issues, and/or removing yourself from the situations that are bothersome are some good ways to prevent from resorting to comfort food.

I notice I am stressed when I start feeling overwhelmed. I like order and routine in my life and not having that overwhelms me.

I tend to handle it in a positive way by making a list and also by removing myself from the situation to get some perspective, usually a run or a bike ride. In a negative way, I tend to let myself get cranky and sometimes I do turn to food.

I don't think I am a stress eater. I usually eat more out of boredom.

I eat, regardless of the type of stress. I guess I just have to accept that, forgive myself, and start over.

Depends on the kind of stress. If it's the stress of having to do something I don't want to do, I have to fight the urge to eat. If it the stress of something happening over which I have no control, I stop eating altogether.

Stress is an intregal part of our lives. There is much written on the effects it has on physical, mental, and spiritual health-not all of it negative. emoticon Just for today consider the following: How do you recognize when you are stressed? What are some of the effects you notice, if any, and what do you do to manage feelings of stress?
