This makes sense to me. I cut out diet sodas and started drinking water over a year ago. I have manged to lose 45lbs. My sister still drinks the stuff and at the same time of trying to lose she has put on 30 lbs. I will definitely pass this article along to her thanks.
thank you for the article, my oldest son and I quit drinking it altogether 6 months ago and it has made a difference for both of us. My husband and my younger son still need some reinforcement as to why I am on them all the time to not drink it. I don't bring it into the house, but they still order it when out. As always, thank you for what you do and offer to us.
This is a rarety in my life maybe once a month, when water taste bad when out with friends.
That theory has always been (as stated in the article) that drinking diet drinks provides justification for overindulging in something else. That's the old joke about going to McDonald's and ordering a Big Mac, large fries, and Diet Coke.
You won't overindulge if you religiously keep a food diary and stay on the program. Non calorie beverages are a tool. Like any other tool it can be abused.

I do. I'm trying to quit because I know they aren't healthy, but I don't think they've made me fat. I lost all of my weight and drank Diet Pepsi (not daily, but several times a week) through it. But I agree, they aren't good for me.

Just because it says diet does not mean it's good for you. One of the best things you can do for your health is eliminate sodas, including diet soft drinks from your diet. The Purdue University study confirmed that rats who were on an artificial sweeteners diet experienced a physiological connection between sweet tastes and calories, which drove them to overeat.
There is a similar relation in humans. The tongue is temporarily satisfied by the artificial sweet taste of diet soda, but your marvelous brain isn't fooled and still craves more calories for energy. So you end up over eating. No wonder we keep asking for a double bacon cheeseburger and a diet coke!"
So you might be left wondering, "What is safe to drink?" The answer, of course, is water. Give it a try; you will wonder why you loved sodas so much. It's an easy habit to kick. For next 10 days, switch from soda to water and notice the difference in your body.
