I agree with sridgeway..start with specific goals..small ones which are easy to reach.
10 minutes on a treadmill sounds difficult but if you put on headphones and listen to music, it`s really only 3 songs. Make them happy songs and you may even do 4 songs !! Then you can REALLY pat yourself on the back.
Good Luck - you came to the right place !

That sounds like a recipe I would like Mybulldogs. I am new here too and just finding my way around. I suppose the hardest thing for me in weight loss is portion control - I just don't have any! I'm working on it though. I see several of you that have posted have lost alot of pounds - congratulations! - you have my respect. I am 53 years old and have working on losing for about 3 months - have lost 13 lbs - seems to be coming off so slow and I am exercising too. Persistance is the key so I'm in it for the long haul. I really like the calorie counter on SparkPeople. Very excited about using this website.

I also use my own meals. Sort of a picky eater. But try to make some small changes first - and make them positive changes instead of negative changes. Instead of saying I won't eat this or I won't do that, try something like this -

I will eat 5 fruits and veggies per day
I will eat 1 whole grain item per day
I will exercise for 10 minutes per day

Then the tracking becomes a positive - you get on to track your victories instead of dreading tracking the things that you ate that you feel you shouldn't have.
It's also harder to overeat when you're trying to fit in that many positive things, you are just not as hungry.

As for the exercise - I tell myself that I need to do 10 minutes, but the biggest hurdle is getting on the treadmill. Once I'm on there, it's so much easier to go longer than 10 minutes, but if I'm tired or busy or just plain not feeling well, I know that I can stop at 10 minutes and still have met my goal.

Try to set some positive goals and track your victories first.

Tracking just takes a bit of getting used to. Once you begin to know your way around things go quicker and easier. I need variety in my diet so I make up my own meals instead of using the SP menu. It just depends on what you feel works best for you.

Welcome to all our new members!

This is a great site, with lots of resources and motivators and community support. You'll get out of it what you put into it.

I agree with Sharon632. If you're not sure where to start, click on "How to Use the Site" in the orange menu bar at the top of the main SP page (after you first sign in).
Then decide what small changes you want to make first. Make your goals reachable to ensure success.
I've found that tracking my food made a big difference. It made me painfully aware of what I was (and wasn't) eating.

Just play around with different parts of the site until you get more familiar with it.

And definitely take it a day at a time. You'll hear that over and over, but it's true.
Don't feel overwhelmed by how far you've still got to go. Instead, congratulate yourself for each accomplishment, no matter how small.

We're here for you. emoticon

I usually have 2 standard breakfasts and a standard lunch. I've put the components into a group and just need to add the group for breakfast and lunch. There is a lot of flexibility in how you manage your food. After a few weeks it stops being onerous. emoticon

I was just browsing the message boards and some of things on this one really hit me. My first week was a disaster. I am so tired when I get home that I do not feel like exercising or going on the computer. I just want to sit which explains my problem!! Anyway, I know I have to motivate myself in small starts but I have just not gotten up the energy yet. I feel a bit overwhelmed by having to track all the foods in such detail and the idea on here of eating the same thing all the time is actually appealing. I think I need to plan the same meals for everyday of the week and just stick with that. Trying to track a hundred different meals gets to be so much work for me. I also think I need to use the actual meals already made up. I just do not know. Guess I am a but bummed at my slow start, but I am still here!!!

Be all that you can be and God will give you credit for the rest.

Hi and welcome to you also MEMEE49. Start with one small change at a time until it becomes a habit. Many people start with increasing their water intake like I did. I also started tracking my food intake on the nutrition tracker. Later I added in exercise, starting with just 5 minutes a day, and tracking that on the fitness tracker.

There is a wealth of information available here. There are articles dealing with most everything and all sorts of medical/health issues. Take advantage of the tools provided.

emoticon newcomers! This is a great site! The nutrition and fitness trackers are key to success! You are not going on a diet! You are going on a lifestyle readjustment. You will change how you approach food and exercise. Everyone can exercise. There is even a team for chair exercisers. People who can not walk. Walking is a great introduction to exercise and it is how I started. If you follow the fast break program it will teach you much of what you need to know about using the site. emoticon emoticon

Hi,
New here and I see I am not alone. I too have been in shape all my life. About 10 years ago I was in the best shape of my life! Then my mother got sick and I moved in with her to take care of her. She had mobility and sight problems so there wasn't much she could do. But she could eat. And I ate with her. LOL! Over the course of about 4 years I fell off the exercise and eating healthy band wagon. After she passed away I told myself I would be able to concentrate on *me* again and get healthy. For some reason that didn't happen. I was comfortable and complacent. Then about 6 months ago my tenant (I have a small mother-in-law apartment) left suddenly. He also left a huge mess. It took me two months and most of my savings to clean and rehab the apartment. I actually enjoyed doing the work and learned a whole new skill set. I kept telling myself as soon as it rented I'd start eating healthy, join WW, do SOMETHING. Because I would be able to afford it. Well its still not rented and I'm still not doing anything. I think emotionally I need to have someone kick me in the pants and tell me that the two things are in no way related. That I dont' have to wait for the money to do something. I may not be able to join a yoga class right now, but I can walk.

So someone KICK me! Keep me moving. Hold me accountable! I'm will ing to be a kicker if someone needs it!

I am starting over with SP after not tracking my nutrition and fitness goals since before Easter. I really blew it.I am 54 years old and I use to weight lift and exercise all the time. Now I am tired and am in need of motivation. I have no problem going to the gym and doing the treadmill for 45 minutes, I will do this starting tomorrow, 3 times a week., My struggle is that I am an emotional eater and eat mindlessly. I've got to stop. Otherwise, I do love to ride my bike when time allows.I work full time with overtime during the week, which leaves me tired. I am glad to be back with SP, lets help each other!!!!

I'm doing this for me!

i see that most of the idea that I had in mind our other spark buddies have given to you i think the one about a spark page is great that way you can get support of others on the journey get and give goodies have some place you can go back and re read your notes of encouragement when you get discourage. explore the site called Spark teams they have some great ones to join and are fun to do a good one might be ten minute work out challenge you just do something for 10 minutes at a time and you can do it several times a day even house work can count do lunges as you vacuum is the main one a remember maybe some one here remembers where to find the story i found here on the site.
maybe check out the cooking challenge and get the Spark cook book its great. hope this helped. remember the beginning is always the hardest take one day at time. emoticon

walk at least 10,000 steps a day. my sister lost 93 pounds walking 15,000 steps a day.

find foods that work with YOUR body chemistry.

i make this mixture for breakfast , lunch and dinner. i have lost 39 pounds .

i cook 4 large portabella mushrooms sliced, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, 4 large onions sliced, 2 large green peppers, 3 cans green beans, 1 can rutabaga and 5 sliced chicken sausages. find foods that work with your chemistry. i created this meal on my own. i can't seem to loose weight if i eat any grain products. so one day i experimented.

it makes enough for at least 4 days, three meals a day. total cost is 12 dollars. i buy the mushrooms and chicken at sams club. sounds crazy but it taste good and most importantly it's working. i'm not hungry . if i feel the urge to cheat i go get a fork full of my mixture. i chew very slowly as to enjoy my meal.

i have added a small banana and grapes for my snacks and to be a fix for my sweet tooth.

you can add other foods into your menu. just know what works with your body chemistry.

I have gone from 198 to 159 pounds. i can now fit into a size 12 comfortably. i feel so much better. think of carrying a 2 year old around your waist every minute of every day. no i am not done. on the obese chart i have gone from being obese to just plain fat. my goal is to drop another 12 pounds. then i will be happy, healthy and never allow myself to get in this condition again.

one might say eating the same food every day would get boring. not true. when you look in the mirror and can see the difference it's worth

i went to the doctor. for the first time in a long time i was not ashamed to get on the scale. i did not have to get beet red because doctor said i was over weight. it felt great.

You said you've been in shape all your life so you just proved to me you have it in you! Been married and divorced twice both after 7 years of marriage. This last time I dated my husband 7 years before I would marry him. Best decision I ever made. Both to date and to marry him! Anyway...No man is worth your health! This is the time for no excuses. Get back to the thing you used to love and everything else will fall into place.

My Motto's:
Life is too short to make excuses.
This is one thing YOU CAN control.....so control it!

Best of luck on your journey to a healthier, fitter you!!

Welcome 2 the team and best of luck to you! Think it is very important to just take it one day at a time; set small goals and go from there. My dog, Bailey, is my best motivator; she loves to go for walks and I feel guilty if I don't take her each day (weather permitting). And I talk to her like she is a person and she acts like she knows exactly what I'm saying. This is a great group for help and support so make the most of it.

Hi and welcome to the team. There is ton upon ton of information available here for your use. Read as much as you can and learn what your body needs. Then use the trackers to record your food and activities which will help you analyze where changes are needed. I am also 68 and no stranger to the aches and pains department. If you need assistance learning how to use the trackers, go to How to Use The Site on your orange menu bar. emoticon

emoticon emoticon emoticon ! You have to take it one day at a time, one meal at a time and just take baby steps. Using the nutrition tracker and the fitness tracker are two very useful tools here on SP. Be sure to drink your water and do some type of exercise even if it is walking. You can start out slow and build up your time. Post here often and keep up with things that are going on. If you need help or encouragement, there is always someone here to help you. You might want to set up your spark page so we can send you goodies and leave comments on your page. It is just another way of communicating and keeping you motivated. Glad to have you join us.

Hello all....I'm new here. I'm 68 and have kept in shape all my life. Now it's getting MUCH harder. I let myself go for over TWO years after I broke up with a man I'd been with for over 7 years. I got depressed and just ate and ate....and worse, I did NO exercise or working out at all. Now I have 30 pounds to lose, have aches and pains I've never had before, eat sort of mindlessly....I get bored, I eat....I get sad, I eat....I don't know what to do, I eat.

I have no idea how to begin working out. I have a puppy now....she's now 6 months old and I got her when she was 8 weeks old. I take her out to walk and do her business, but I don't walk for....I even get bored with that. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this boat I'm in or any one like it. Having to lose 30 isn't the worse part....I have a tummy I've never had before and clothes don't look good on me TO me anymore and I don't have a desire to get anymore....can't tuck in my blouse ....well, not to go on and on here....but I just feel that this is an overwhelming task to get rid of this tummy.

I also don't know what to eat....I love to cook, but don't know how or what to eat to lose weight. Anyone out there know any words of encouragement for me?

Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to.
