That's a good idea having the measuring spoons on the counter within easy reach!!
I have one that slides for different measurements that's a magnet. I like it within easy reach on the side of the magnet board. Cleaning out the fridge tomorrow, thanks for the challenge!

I bought several extra sets of measuring spoons. I keep measuring spoons loose in a glass on the kitchen counter for easy access.

Only thing I need for my kitchen now is a dishwasher. No room for a built-in and no money for a portable. I usually find hand washing them to be relaxing, but not anymore.

I have been working on my kitchen this past week and I am very pleased with it :) 'My' snacks are now all in their own little section of the pantry and the fridge is cleaned out and full of fruits and veggies. My supplements and Weight Watchers 'tools' are all in a nice little spot on a side counter and my blender is now out and ready for daily use.
I think my next goal will be my closet and drawers ... I think it's time to get rid of the bigger sizes ... there will be no going back. If they're not there I won't have a fallback so I'll just have to make sure I maintain :)

I need to do that too Jenae...I have a Euro-Pro oven my brother gave me for Christmas five years ago, and it's in my walk in closet...my cabinet space is very limited. Apartments tend to be that way.

This morning I went through my food cabinet, sorting, making note of what i had and what I'll need when I shop again.
I went through my fridge, clearing out clutter and tossing half rotted produce. Then I did my freezer...again, making note of what I have. I have a boatload of chicken in there! Ground chicken breast, boneless, skinless thighs, a big bag of seasoned B/S chicken thighs (great on the grill), a couple of pork loins, Tilapia fillets...and a good assortment of veggies and two bags of berries. Plus a stack of Lean Cuisine meals I need to eat.

I had fun...now to really clean things and do my counters and drawers and other cabinets. I have one deep drawer with my plastic containers and another for lids. I use them a lot, but could thin out and pare down, a lot...and still have plenty.

Lord, please empty me of self will, and fill me with Your spirit.

My kitchen is now set up as much as I can get it. Even though it's a bigger house, I still have very little cabinet and counter space. Everything is in easy reach. Deep freeze and other freezer are both organized and fridge is organized. Pantry cabinet is totally organized and we put "tot locks" on it, so we have to use a strong magnet to open it. By the time the door is open, you don't really want that snack and you need the drink.

I have been working on organizing my kitchen every chance I get. It is coming together pretty good but I do have a way to go. I am thinking about buying some new cookware and some other small appliances, and getting rid of some I never use.
I purchased a new diet scale from weight watchers and a set of measuring scoops from weight watchers. I also purchased a spray bottle for my olive oil so i can get the proper portion this was also from weight watchers.

My goal is to shop once a month for groceries, and I'm using what I have on hand in the meantime. Therefore my pantry is emptying out~ I found a nice plate at Goodwill for my No salt spices, and I use them a lot. I gave my extra utensils (too many) and the big old container they were in to my co-worker. I have just my essentials in a heavy glass vase with a square bottom, that parks in the corner of the cabinet. Looks good!

I need to go through the dishes side of my cabinets and thin things out. I need to do my freezer too, Beth. After my cooking spree a few weeks back, it too is thinning out. I used my ground pork for chili, ground turkey for pasta sauce and a pork loin for BB-Q, plus the beans and black eyed peas. I have all those things in one cup containers in the freezer compartment of the fridge. I need to defrost and clean my freezer before restocking...in December.

Lord, please empty me of self will, and fill me with Your spirit.

I was inspired by your post to go through the cabinets and reevaluate what was nutritionally worth keeping. One thing I learned at a Weight watchers meeting a long time ago that was useful is to buy cheap measuring spoon sets at the dollar store and keep the appropriate ones in the foods you use often (cereals, oatmeal) to make portion control super convenient. I went ahead and did that this time around. I think this will help me be true to my new lifestyle commitment! Thnaks for the inspiration!!

Just saw this challenge. It's perfect timing! (Thanks, God)
Last week I started tackling our pantry. It's a 1 pc. floor to ceiling cabinet I refinished a few years back with two doors and adjustable shelves. After moving around a few shelves and adjusting heights, it's way more functional. I cleared everything out of there and started tossing outdated stuff. I also donated some stuff that was still good but not part of my diet goals. My husband and I are trying to switch to gluten-free and also keeping processed food to a minimum. I gave my wheat pasta to my bro-in-law (we share a house with him), and all the bread-making supplies, flours, etc. are on the very top shelf. I don't have gluten-free flours yet, but they will be kept separate from bro-in-law's flours.

The next upper shelf has can goods now which is about eye level for me. Much easier to plan meals at a glance. In lower section, I have beans, pasta and rice. Then items used less frequently like certain vinegars or canning supplies or overstock of certain items. The bottom shelf has potatoes, apples, onions, etc. I found a sturdy long cardboard box for the potatoes and apples, but eventually I'd like to invest in some pretty baskets (wire or woven).

I keep 1 set of measuring cups and spoons hanging on shelf pegs by my kitchen windows. Others are in a handy top drawer by the stove. I have a scale (actually a postal scale) which I keep on the top shelf of lower cabinet to protect it from spills, but it's not ideally located. I want to buy a real kitchen scale that is easier to wipe down and clean and made to sit on the countertop. We have limited counter space, though. My bro-in-law just bought a juicer which is taking up another spot on the counter with the toaster and coffeemaker (with built-in grinder). I think we just need to rethink the kitchen space.

There's some remodeling left to do including a backsplash for the stove and sink. I think if we can focus on that, too...the other stuff will come together.

I've de-cluttered and organized all of my kitchen cupboards over the Christmas holiday season. I wanted to be ready for the new Year too. My kitchen has an old fashioned, red and white retro theme to it - including my plates. I've always used the smaller plates that were popular back before the 70's. In fact, I've used them so long that when I go to anyone else's house for dinner, I'm always a little taken aback at how big the plates are. Easily twice the size! And of course the bigger the plate, the bigger the portions we're going to eat. And YIKES the present day tumblers/glasses are enormous too! That's probably a good thing if you're filling them up with water, but just imagine how much soda you can pour into one of those monsters!

My DH has agreed to start weighing and measuring all his food now. He used to just "guesstimate", but, he went to the doctors the other day for his 6 month diabetic check up, and his blood sugar levels were higher than they should be, plus he's 40 pounds overweight, so he's decided that being more accurate when he's dishing out his portions is the best way to control that. I'm usually the one in charge of all of that for him, but sometimes he fixes either his lunch or breakfast if I'm not able to, and that's when he was getting sloppy with the amounts.

I love the idea of buying some new, colorful measuring cups and spoons to help encourage him (and me) to use them more often.

Thanks for the other great ideas here as well :)

hugs--Georgia

I've got a few of the cabinets done since I received new dishes and glasses for Christmas. They are on the lower top cabinets. Now I need to get to the upper top and get rid of the stuff that probably has dust all over it from not being used in years.

My pantry is usually up to date because I rarely guy canned food. I prefer fresh on everything veggie-wise. My hoard is cleaning supplies - that area looks scary.

My food scale is on the counter and I use it for everything. I track by grams or ounces, even if the item says a service is X number of the item. Guess it's my OCD. I do need to organize the counters better. Considering I cook all the time, you would think the counters would be in great shape. They aren't because I leave mail and other items there to "look at later".

Apartment is DONE!!!! LOL

The house is a work in progress, we will not return to the house until the end of the month. That is only if the weather is good. I will have about a week at the house before we leave again. Will post how the house is then.

No foods with high fructose corn syrup, sugar, rice syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose etc. in the first three ingredients.

No foods that have more than 3 ingredients that I can not pronounce.

If an item has more than 10 ingredients it is too processed, I will not eat or buy the item.

I still have to do my deep freeze, if I ever get over this horrific cold.

Where does everyone stand on their kitchen project check list?
I've done the following:
Cleaned out old medicine, foods, spices
Set measuring cups out in a huge bowl
Set measuring spoons out in a glass
Set a food scale out
Cleared the and neatened the pantry, fridge and freezer
Bought some new cookware, measuring cups, spoons, plates

Still to do- the deep freeze
Give cleaned out foods that are still in date away to food pantry or other

Goodwill is an awesome place to find cute lunch sized plates and small bowls for smaller serving sizes.

I organized some shelves in my kitchen and took some things out of the pantry and in to the kitchen. I have an open shelved cabinet that I put my noodles, rice and beans on. I had not been using these thing, but now that I can see them out in the open I will use them. I had in the shelves my reusable supermarket bags that I kept forgetting to take to the supermarket and use. I moved those bags over by the front door so I can easily get them before I go shopping.

Who I am really keeps surprising me.

Food at home gets pretty well emptied out each week as we go from paycheck to paycheck and we've had a few lean weeks with only $20 paychecks for 3 weeks now.

I was blessed in that my mother & I both sold Tupperware years ago, so I have a lot of storage pieces and 3 sets of measuring cups and spoons. I also have the 1 cup and 2 cup pyrex measuring cups. I am working on reorganizing my counter as I found a lazy susan of oils and vinegars is getting too warm where it is. Will move something else over there.

MY MONEY SAVER TIP:

I personally go to Goodwill for plates, and bowls of certain sizes many times. They aren't so big on the measuring cups, and spoons but the dollar store does carry them and so does Aldi at times.

You can also take old favorite glasses and bowls or newer ones from Goodwill and check their content capacity using a measuring cup and water.

Today I plan to walk with my friend Cindy and also clean my deep freeze. I was going to wait for the hubby for that task, but it just has to be done to get me another stop closer to finishing my kitchen project.

HOW IS EVERYONE DOING ON THEIR KITCHEN PROJECTS? The idea is to make your kitchen usable for your new lifestyle by getting rid of old, out dated foods/ medicines, getting measuring cups, spoons, plates, bowls, glass ware out where you can find and use it, dumping old useless storage ware and getting some that works, generally anything you can think of to make your kitchen your friend when it comes to making good food choices at home.

Yes, I picked up some bright red measuring spoons this week and am on the lookout for bright coloured measuring cups now, mine are white. They're okay for now but would like bright colours.

My husband cleaned our big freezer and nothing in there at all now! My grandson is "inheriting" it from us, lol. With a family, he can use it.

Talking about "new", I think next time I'm out, I'll look for an extra pretty drinking glass to put on my counter beside the taps, that will make drinking my water an even more pleasant thing to do!

Kitchen counter: we have a 4-slice toaster that I'd like to downsize to a 2-slice one but hubby disagrees. Will have to wait until he sees it differently, lol. That would save some counter space for other things.

Oh another good thing to organize in the kitchen is glass ware, bowls, plates...

Know your sizes. Are your glasses 8 oz? 16 oz? Do you need new ones so you can measure?

Your bowls... they have these cheap one and 2 cup sizes out now

Plates... buy some cute luncheon sized ones for yourself or your whole family

I was a good girl and cleaned the freezer today, not the deep freeze, but the indoor freezer.

NEW stuff makes me want to use it too. I saw down there where Gloria said that helped her. It helps me too. I got colorful new measuring cups, spoons and over the summer, some cookware on sale.

Hmmm, I'm new to this team today and find this challenge . . . challenging! I'm a true clutterer but will get at my kitchen pronto!
I have very little space on my counter and on them I have: toaster, 4 cup coffee maker; blender; bread box; small cannister set; jar with my dog's treats. On the wall above my counter is my measuring spoons and measuring cups. I want to do away with those measuring things and just have the spoons & cups that I can put in my cupboard and take out when I am measuring.

I'm going to reread all these posts, some great ideas here!

I have already cleaned out my refrigerator and cupboards of all outdated foods and any non-healthy foods, that's a start!

I donated all of my wheat-containing foods over the holiday season (my IBS is under control when I'm gluten-free), and also sorted through my entire freezer (had to make room for the turkey lol).

I have been lurking in the shadows of this team for some time. Find this group very inspirational In June I lost all forward movement with my healthy habits I had adopted about 6 months prior. My son and DIL and grandson moved in with us due to economic issues. I know it is happening in a lot of families these days. Well, I thought it would work out OK to share a kitchen-not. I am very fortunate that I have an apartment attached to my home that we build 20 years ago and where my mother lived until she passed away. In recent years it had become an office and completely unusable for cooking. I started changing it over a couple of months ago realizing I could not function in the main kitchen. Bought a dorm fridge, micro, mini oven and a few utensils in an effort to get cooking. It just didn't work. A week ago, I realized the issue was the lack of a real fridge to store fruits and veggies in. They either froze or the temp was too high to safely store salad dressing etc. I just broke down and bought a fridge on sale and it was delivered yesterday. What a treat to have room to store food properly. I went out and bought tons of fruit and veggies and have been happily cooking and eating healthy all day. Now I am in the process of finding storage places for all my husbands office stuff. Thanks Indy for the inspirations. We all tend to think it is just will power required to live a healthy lifestyle, but environment and organization can make or break us. Oh, and I also need to create a Sparkpage for myself.

Because I live in two places here is where I am at The apartment.

Have the cupboards all in order. No outdated food.
No out dated medications.
Fridge freezer up to date.
Fridge has only good stuff. Any time I open a salad dressing, jams etc. I write on the lid or label with a sharpie the date I opened it.
Measuring cups and spoons are hanging on cup hooks over the sink.
Food scale is on top of fridge, I use it at every meal.
Have just enough plastic storage here for our needs.

Our house.

Have the cupboards in semi order, needs more work. No outdated food.
Have not tackled the medication cupboard.
Freezer, needs major work. My daughter stores her food in this too, so I need her at the house to work on this with me!
Fridge freezer not bad but still needs a bit of work.
Fridge has only good stuff. I do the same thing as the apartment, any time I open a salad dressing, jams etc. I write on the lid or label with a sharpie the date I opened it.
Measuring cups and spoons are in a drawer under my counter where prep work is done etc.
Food scale is on top of the microwave, I use it at every meal.
Have way to much plastic storage, just gave a small bag to my daughter. More needs to go out of the house.

I had organized my kitchen recently but after hearing about this challenge I took a nother look at the kitchen. I had a old boom box sitting on top of my microwave that i had not used in a year. So I took the b. box out and thought what could I put in that space. Well my food scale was way over on the kitchen table so I moved it on top of the microwave and put some healthy snacks there too.
Now all I have to do is go through the pantry and pull out those out dated foods.

Who I am really keeps surprising me.
Be unstoppable!!!!
Kathryn

I have been and will continue to use up the way way too many things I buy cause they were on sale and I even had coupons. Dumb! Working on the fridge and cabinets a little every day. No freezer, darn it.
I will buy a food scale as soon as i get to a store within the next few days. Already have most drawers organized and will keep them that way.
Great idea Beth--as always.

That's great. I clean out my pantry every couple of months - usually when I have trouble finding something - LOL.

My local food bank will accept unopened packages and foods that have expired up to 1 year past the expiration date.

When I clean out and defrost the upright freezer - usually 2x a year, I take inventory and post it on the door. I printed out a list of things I usually have on hand, like chicken breasts, whole chickens, frozen veg, etc. I put that list into a clear page-holder. I use a wipe-off marker to write how many of each item I have. There are blank lines on the form for odds and ends.
When I take something out of the freezer, I change the number next to the item.

I check the list before I go shopping, so I don't stock up on things I don't need. I can't tell you how many bags of freezer-burned, dehydrated vegetables I threw out before I started this system.

I took everything off the countertops and gave them a good scrubbing with a mix of baking soda and water, it really brightened them! Then I only put certain things back so it would look like there was more space. i left my Kitchenaid mixer and food prosser out, my Blendtec and a pitcher full of utensils so they are easy to grab. Then organized cupboards so that food scale, measuring cups and spoons are out of sight but easy to grab.

Yesterday I reorganized my kitchen cabinets, placing measuring items, spices, knives, and such above the counter where I do my chopping, mixing, and general recipe prep. I also cleaned out my refrigerator and organized it using plastic boxes. Same for the freezer.

I recently bought a set of small freezer bowls to use for single servings of the recipes I make. Having something yummy in the freezer that can be easily heated up is a good way to avoid eating unhealthy stuff when I'm hungry and tired.

Great topic Indygirl, as always!

So far: keep in mind, there are 5 in my family and a cat and dog and very little counter-top.

I have already gotten rid of the fattening bad stuff, but my refrigerator is sectioned off into two, one side for my vegan and the other for the lactose free and regular diets. Same with the pantry cabinet.

Food scale is in easy reach.
3 sets of measuring spoons and 5 sets of measuring cups, all in easy reach.
1 food processor 8 cup (new yesterday) on counter
1 mini processor 2 cup in easy reach
1 mini chopper 1 cup in easy reach.

Deep freeze is sectioned off with boxes and baskets. We have flour (3 kinds), 1 box dedicated to candles (live in hot, humid South Florida), all the ice blocks for coolers, 2 boxes for my vegan meat replacers, 1 box for vegetables, 1 basket for the veggie scraps to make veggie broth and 1 basket for the family meat.

All medicine and supplements are on 2 lazy susan's on my counter and we check the dates weekly. No medicine cabinets in bathroom. Scale to weigh myself is in an easy to find spot. My pedals for pedaling while in chair are in the living room and my step for aerobics (hah!! not with fibromyalgia) is in the back room waiting patiently.

We have all tile floors, and with the animals we have to vacuum and mop at least 3 times a week, so that's a workout.

I cleaned out my cupboards and my refrigerator. I got rid of everything out dated or extremely unhealthy. The things that are still good to eat, but need to be removed are going to a food pantry. It's a good way to help others while trimming my waist. I also cleaned out my medicine cabinet of all outdated medicine. Now I need to do my freezer and my deep freezer.

WOW was I surprized at all of the out of date stuff I had! I think the 2009 date scared me the most. It's a good thing I always check dates before I cook.

This challenge is about getting your kitchen ready to support your healthy lifestyle.

I personally am working on:

Clearing out outdated foods from cupboards, refrigerator and freezer
Clearing out outdated medicines
Straightening and neatening cupboards, refrigerator and freezer
Putting a big bowl of measuring cups on my counter top
Putting a food scale on my counter top
Putting a short glass of measuring spoons on my counter top
Buying storage ware for left overs and batch cooking

What will you work on? What have you done so far?
