Thank you again Felina! I bought ingredients that I liked and felt were healthy and made my own Trail Mix yesterday. Portioned it out into 20 snack bags, kept out enough for a week and froze the rest. Tastes really good, satisfies me and is healthy. The only dried fruit I put in it was cranberries but put in lots of slivered almonds and chopped walnuts.

My sister came to visit, tried a pack and is going to make her own today. Isn't it something how it can have a snowball affect?

The only trail mix I ever tried was one I found at our local farm store. They make their own - peanuts, raisins, mini M+M's. It's delicious but the calories are a little high - 140 for 3 tablespoons. I buy it occasionally, for a special treat. I've also made my own, using the same ingredients to save a little money.

Yeah, dried fruit is high in calories, unfortunately.

Here's a link to the farm store's page on their snack mixes. Some of them have the nutritional values listed. Could give you some more ideas for making your own -

Felina, I found a few Trail Mix recipes and am thinking of making them for snacks. Thing is, they only put in how much protein, fat and carbs are in them, they don't list calories. Mostly made with nuts, dried fruits, a couple with choc chips. They all look so good and I found them on a healthy eating site on Face Book. I'm thinking it might be worth looking up the calories and go from there. I've always felt dried fruit was loaded in calories!

Do you or anyone know about home made Trail Mixes???

Thank you Felina! The latest was a strawberry pie he bought for "me", he doesn't eat strawberries. When my sister's husband came over yesterday I gave it to him to take home! There is one pecan tart and one slice of caramel apple pie sitting on the counter and I told hubby is he doesn't eat them himself today, in the garbage can they go.

I'm taking care of my body, making my own choices! Got lots of fresh fruit in the house plus fat-free Greek yogurt that I love!

That is so unfair ! Ignore him ! Don't eat it just because he said he bought it for you. My husband has done the same thing and I've been tuning him out. I put what he bought "for me" away so I can't see it. That's been working. Out of sight out of mind. If the temptation gets to strong then I toss it in the trash. I've been doing that for a while now and he's gotten the message. He now just buys for him and is trying harder to eat healthier, like me.

What he said to you is awful. Ignore that too, prove him wrong !

I'm still struggling with the night time snacking. And . . . my husband sabatoges all my efforts by bringing home pies, tarts, donuts, etc., and says to me "these are for YOU, I know you like them" and when I tell him I'm not eating them, I hear "you'll never lose weight anyway"! Discouragement right in my own home! Now, how am I to be strong without arguing? I detest arguing!

I'm totally struggling....I've lost 20-lbs but have like 30 more to go and I eat 3 great meals and snacks, but I'm eating at night when I'm not hungry, not a hunger sensation around,,,I just eat junk food..the stuff isn't normally in the house so when hubby runs to the store I always ask for something.

Not sure how I can start the day off positive and eat great, only to say who cares at night? At 56 you would think this cycle would end....

Oh, Alicia, I understand you perfectly! I'm trying to take it one step at a time. The task for today is not eating more bread ( I had a nice tost and eggs for breakfast) and having a salad and beans for dinner. I am going to allow myself to have total freedom with fruit and vegs at the lunch time.
I have a lot of crafting for today to keep me from thinking about food. I want to LOVE my food, not to think about it as my enemy.

I start out pretty well every day. Protein shake in the am, I usually struggle finding healthy foods for lunch, so I end up eating tuna sandwich or something. I know the bread isn't beneficial for me and my cravings but as I said, I really struggle for lunch ideas. I think my taste buds are so out of whack from all the sugar I eat that good foods such as salads are difficult for me to eat. I have no taste for them. anyway, then dinner. That is usually okay too. I feel like I am doing pretty well throughout the day and I know where the treats are that my husband has in the house or sometimes he puts them in his truck because I tell him to. That doesn't matter. Something in my thinking goes haywire. I say, oh, just a little or I will start again tomorrow. Well tomorrow never comes and I say this every single day. Today, I had a lovely conversation with myself while buying pizza because my appointment ran late and hubby had to get to bed and on and on. I ended up going next door to a store to get a drink and spotted a king size candy bar. Said I will split it with hubby. I just finished it. This thinking keeps me from even posting on spark. it keeps me from bothering. But, I have to do something. I am getting bigger and bigger and I have more and more pain. I honestly don't know how to stop this way of thinking. How can I get through the day eating pretty well, exercise, and then blow it all after 8pm and the sugar wins every time. I wish I could lock myself up in a room with out food. I just don't want to have to think about it anymore. What to eat, not to eat, how to eat, where to eat. on and on. It seems so complicated but is it supposed to be?

One good thing is-I don't eat candy at all :) Ah, well, just chocolate.
I generally eat good food-but a lot of it. I am a short person, but I am able to devour bigger dinner than DH or DSs :(
I LOVE veggies and wanted to make a lot of kale chips, as the are very satisfying for my appetite, but they didn't have any at the store this morning. I'm trying to be busy and active all day-it helps.

I'm surprising myself !

This morning I tried something different for breakfast - overnite oatmeal. Equal parts oatmeal, yogurt and milk mixed together in a mug, covered and refrigerated overnite. I added diced peaches to it. I liked it but it was very filling.

I started a personal challenge last week to control the sweets and junk food. When I get the urge I ask myself why I want it and if I'm actually hungry. Each time the answer has been "no", so I don't eat it. It's working ! Today will be 10 days no sweets and no junk food !

SURVIVOR61, my husband does that too, thinks he's rewarding me by offering sweets. Sometimes I'm able to say no thanks, but too many times I take it without thinking. I'm trying to only have goodies he likes available. That makes it easier to say no. Otherwise, I'm doing like you, take a smaller portion. Good luck with your hubby too.

Hi Felina,
You not alone in the husband department, bring sweets in the house. Not only does mine bring in the sweets for himself, but when I get my workouts in he calls himself rewarding me with a little something. And yes, I have tried all the advice I have gotten from fellow spark members and the articles on here. But I have decided to take it in stride and smaller portions, instead of fighting about it and feed a lot of it to the dogs. Good Luck with the Hubby..

I am feeling at loose ends today. It is a dreary day here in Michigan and a little on the cool side. I don't feel like being outside. My grandson just left to go with a friend and his family for the 4th. of July so the house seems a little quiet. I know I should clean house but I don't really want to. Blah. blah, blah. I guess I have the blahs! That translates into wanting to eat anything and everything in sight!
But I am trying to hold out and think of something more constructive to do.
I know the right things to do but some days its harder than others. emoticon

My problem is choosing unhealthy snacks. I tend to reach for the sweets or salty snacks. I'm working on having only healthy choices in the house. I also have to get my husband to not offer me sweets since I have a hard time saying no.

Cut up the veggies very small when you incorporate them into food. Also, a person to talk to is Hoosiergirlindy. She is having the same issues. She would be more than glad to help out!

I struggle with eating the way I know that I should. I eat two veggies, corn and potatoes and both are starches. For me it is a taste and texture thing. When I was growing up we were not made to try new things so, I never learned to try new things. It is a real struggle for me to put something new especially veggies into my mouth. I am trying to work on it. But it is not going as well as I would have hoped. I really want to learn how to eat salads with healthy toppings. I know my weight loss would go so much faster if I ate better. I am trying to incorporate more veggies into things that I already like, such as casseroles and spaghetti. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

I love, love, love baby carrots!!! They satisfy my need to eat something with texture and crunch plus a bit of tartness and sweetness - they're so great! Adding broccoli and cauliflower is a great idea!emoticon

I've been doing a little better at night with the snacking. I have shifted from the carb loaded snacks to the protein snacks to help my blood sugar levels in the morning and amazingly the cravings have slowed down a lot.....

I wish I still felt comfortable to eat popcorn. I love it, but I cracked a tooth and ended up with a root canal and a crown. That piece of popcorn cost me a lot of pain and money. I decided then and there to never eat popcorn again. I just realized that I could probably eat popcorn flavored rice cakes - I think I've seen them in the stores. emoticon emoticon

Snacks are my downfall too! My meals are healthy, tasty and filling but I always want snacks out of boredom, frustration, anger, all emotional reasons!

I think I'll air pop a huge bowl of popcorn and nibble on that when the snack attack strikes! Great idea!

Since starting maintenance I am finding it more difficult to find the correct calorie range. I increased my calories, gained, then decreased them. I then lost too much. I have to find the correct range.

I love SparkPeople

I am a night snacker. i like ice cream probably the best. I found the smart ones brownies and vanilla ice cream are very satisfying. When I first bought them I was somewhat disappointed. I thought there would be two in the package and there were four. I said oh this is a waste of money. They will never fill me up! I was wrong! LOL I am satisfied when I finish them and it soothes my sweet tooth. If I don't have them I have a bag of Emerald nuts or a Fiber One Brownie.

Im a night snacker too...we'd snack on chips or if there was leftovers from supper, eat more of that, so now, I don't usually keep leftovers and always have baby carrots, green pepper strips and celery on hand and the more and more I ate them instead, the more I didn't want the others and crave the veggies :)

yes, I am a "night person" too! I plan a 200 calorie snack for around midnight and count it as the previous day's. I eat only 2 meals each day because of my work schedule so that snack is my salvation! Here are some of the things I eat:
vanilla nonfat yogurt, 1 medium sliced banana, 12 teddy grahams all together
dried apricots and cherries with 1 square dark chocolate
almonds and chocolate
peanut butter on 1 slice whole wheat bread
rice crackers with cranberry-cinnamon goat cheese (1 oz.)
apple wedges dipped in peanut butter and mini chocolate chips

these things really help! if you can save some of those calories and if you can do that, you will feel like you've gotten a treat at the end of the day! hope this helps.

When I go to costco I have a problem with the free samples that they hand out as I just cqnnot seem to say no thank you. now before I go I make sure it is just after lunch and I am full and not interested. I still take a free sample if it is something that I am interested but not often.

My "Sweet Tooth". I am often in search of something sweet to satisfy that nasty tooth. I cannot rid the house of sweets as DH loves his sweets and has no weight problem. I love to bake and enjoy homemade baked goods. Once in a while I completely eliminate all sweets but somehow go back to them.
Solution is to drop them "cold turkey".

My problem is that I am a night person, so I have a snack about 8pm, but then I am up till 2am sometimes and I am hungry and if we have snacks in the house I have a hard time not eating. I know that it is bad to eat that late because you are less active, anyone else have this problem?

My husband and I had a bad habit of nibbling after dinner. Now I plan a snack and build it into my tracker. I have found that popcorn helps us get that crunch factor. I have also learned that if I eat a small protein snack (usually light string cheese) before bed my fasting blood sugar is lower in the morning.
I am also working hard to make eating off limits after 10:00 PM. Hopefully when I master that I can set it back to 9:00.

Late night eating. Not because I'm hungry just because I thought of something that sounds good and I WANT IT......

This isn't a battle of hunger, it's a battle of control. I MUST get control of this tonight and then work on the problem each and every night until it's no longer a bad habit but a good habit.......
I've done it before and laid there night after night crying myself to sleep. Then it was all better and the problem wasn't a problem anymore. Then you let one thought creep in and the problem takes over again.

It's going to be a very difficult and long nights step to getting control again but it WILL happen
AGAIN!

Hubby and I always would enjoy 'treats' ice cream, pastries, even sandwiches. After a health scare and his cooperation we cut out all those things except we said we would allow the occasional treat when out. This makes our home sacrosanct. We are both feeling so much better and I cannot believe the energy boost I am enjoying. We only go out maybe twice a month.Because of dog walking we do well in the exercise dpt.
