My main goal for the Holiday season (which to me, is Christmas and New Year's) is to get through the time without allowing myself to get too down. My mom's birthday was Christmas Day and I miss her a lot. (She died in '04 from emphysema, she was 80 yrs. old). I don't have a good relationship with my dad, who is living in a nursing home. I have my husband and sons to lean on, and I will not allow myself to ruin the holidays for them, they don't deserve it.

So, that's basically it. If I can decrease eating sweets, that will help too, but mainly I am concentrating on having a nice Christmas.

Most of my family will be away for Thanksgiving so my mother, bro-in-law and I will be going to an area casino for the day and have their buffet meal. My plan is to fill up on the salad bar, limit the turkey dressing and keep within my calorie range. In a way this is much better for me because I will not have all the leftovers in the house.

i don't want to gain the usual 10, so if I maintain, that will be a win. anything lost beyond that is bonus. How to do it? working on treating the holiday events as special days to enjoy/sample the foods. The rest of the days I'm trying to treat like the rest of the year.

My goals for the Holiday's is to continue the downward trend in my weight which means not to overdue on any one occasion. I will only be attending one Christmas party and know that I need to stick to small portions and eat as many veggies as possible. Choose the healthier meat option and say no to bread. My Mom is coming out and we are doing Thanksgiving at my place so I am in control of what is made and how it is made. We are going to have a pretty straight forward dinner of turkey, stuffing (homemade), mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, fruit/lettuce salad, and dinner rolls. Pumpkin pie for dessert. Now as far as what everyone else brings to the dinner I don't have control over that but I do have control over how much I choose to consume and I plan to only eat in moderation the entire weekend. Also we are going out shopping early on Black Friday so lots of cardio in that looking for great deals and fighting the foot traffic.

I am going to eat out at a Country Buffet I plan on having a lot of veggies and turkey. This place usually has a sugar free desert so I will have it. I will watch my portion size. There will be no left overs so don't have to worry about that.

Hello everyone.
I'm glad to hear about all the healthy plans for coping with the holidays. Sometimes I think the days where people were lucky to have an orange in their stockings and celebrated with more modest get-togethers were healthier. I am sticking with my goals for the "72 days until 2013" goals for now. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day. Eat at least 5 freggies and journal 6 of seven days. When these small obtainable goals become consistent good habits I will add more.

MOMKAT4310: What do you use in place of dairy in your pumpkin custard? I was going to message you, but I thought maybe other people would like to know as well.

I love to bake, so I bake many gifts. I use either mold pans or loaf pans, so there is nothing to nibble on, and I can still bake. We will go to daughters for Thanksgiving, and she fixes a diabetic safe and dairy free dinner. Heavy on veggies. She has a dairy allergic daughter so we are all about safe cooking for her. She is 12 and a great cook on her own. We also fix a turkey and lots of healthy sides. DH and I then make frozen dinners we can eat with a free conscience. I bake pumpkin custard filling dairy free and with no crust. We might add a little calorie free Cool Whip type topping. I bake apples with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice, no added sweetener. Sometimes peeled and sliced sometimes half peeled. Feels indulgent, but no more calories than eating an apple. Can do pears the same way. Leading up to the holidays, I eat a large salad 2X daily, with cooked dry beans, and a variety of low cal veggies. Make my own dressings, so no sugar, minimum olive oil, good herbs and spices. I also abide by the eat less (but not too much less) for several days before a holiday meal. The work party is at a Chinese Restaurant, and we have set a buffet, so I will be able to choose lots of veggies and fruits. We will have 3 other Christmas parties, all are order on your own, so I can choose. Lasts year we did not do the cookie exchange, all so busy at work. Participation is by choice, so even if we do have it, I don;t have to participate. My DH is a cookie monster, but he like cookies that do not appeal to me, so that is not a problem. I have been making a major soup every weekend, and I take a container every day to work. just have to keep working at this. Did not get here in a day or a week so it's OK that it takes a while to get back to being a normal size person.

I will not indulge in sweets or high fatty foods. I will watch my portion sizes and will reframe from second portions. I realize that if I start eating forbidden foods, it may trigger a binge, and will hurt my food plan. Binges have always thrown me into a miserable depression and created more problems for me in the long run.

Thanksgiving will find us packing the odds and ends in the storage shed getting ready to load the truck on Friday and drive back home on Sat. All the loading and unloading should offset all the sitting while driving. Then it will be unpacking and decorating for the first time in 5 years!!! We don't have any family to be with so we will probably go fishing for Christmas and eat fresh caught fish. If i don't make it I won't eat it!! Fortunately my hubby isn't into sweets so no temptations to deal with.

Which came first, the tornado or the travel trailer??

I'm going to continue working out at the pool. Love the aquasize and water aerobics classes!
Daughter is having the dinner so no leftovers for us -- just the dish I'm taking! (but ohh I do miss the leftover turkey -- the deli kind just doesn't taste the same as a Thanksgiving turkey!!)
No baking at this house -- except for my Christmas cookies -- and those will be mostly given away (now you know I'll have to have a couple!!)

This is the beginning of our heavier work season. I just plan on not gaining weight. I plan on doing more strength training. I hope to stay healthy. Trying to stay away from any holiday goodies. I am reading more labels and am truly shocked at all the calories, sugar and fat in my diet. Hoping to cut out candy and cake like items from my diet.

I cut back 300 calories a day for 1 1/2 weeks that gives me 3000 extra calories for each holiday, just in case I need them. I enjoy Thanksgiving Day with my family and also a day near Christmas, this will Be Sunday Dec. 23rd this year.

I plan to take it easy and stick to my plan. When my daughter has her cookie exchange I will make goodies and take them but, I will not bring any home. She is also having the family Christmas this year and that will be easier on me since I won't have to cook and have all of the left overs around. Other than that I will use portion control and track my nutrition.

What are your plans for Staying On Track for the Holiday season, Thanksgiving through New Years?

For me I will be at home, but for us this is the Summer storm/cyclone (hurricane) season though we are fairly south of the main area we can still get an odd cyclone, so I’ll:
Stock my home with healthy foods, including extra canned things, and long life milk, and dog food.
Eat at home often, avoiding restaurants when I can.
Drink lots of fresh water.
Avoid making and buying Christmas goodies and therefore having them in my house.
Exercise at least 4 - 5 times a week, Curves, swimming, Chair Exercise, walking.
. Stay accountable – track all food and exercise.
Continue to SPARK!

How about you? What are your plans for staying on track?
