MtnDaisy,

I usually hike or run on the Wildwood Trail a couple times a week from late spring to early autumn. My starting point is usually Lower Macleay Park.

Dear GAYEMC,
I live in North Portland. I would love to walk with someone who is on a beginning level. I have some problems with one knee, and a lifetime of sedentary practices. I have Diabetes, and daily exercise is crucial, but I can't seem to keep going. I walked yesterday, and could last only ten minutes. If someone lives in this area, just off Rosa Parks, above the Willamette River, and would like to walk, please reply, and we can motivate each other.

Thanks, Sharron

Would love to walk with someone, but my best is about 10 minutes at a moderate pace right now. At least, I thought it was moderate. Walked 1/2 mile in 10 minutes, so, three miles per hour.

I live in Orchards.

Hello there! I'm new to the team (well new to actually checking the forums). I live in SE Portland near Mall 205, and I have a serious deficit of people to work out with. I just don't have anyone close by who's schedule, interests (fitness-wise), and fitness level are similar to mine. I'm not a runner, or a strict walker either, but I did kind of limp my way through Hood To Coast last summer so I must have SOME spring in my step :) I'm eagerly awaiting the nice weather for more chances to get outside. I would be happy to meet up with someone on Tues/Wed between 9 - 11:30, any weekday around 6:30 PM, or anytime on weekends. I don't mind driving a bit to meet up, but the Eastside would be easier. And I'm happy to go anywhere for a weekend workout. So anyway, let me know if you're interested emoticon

Deweyswak, I like the idea of golf course walks! I thought we'd get lucky at the Oregon Food Bank last time, since it's close to a golf course, hoping we could fit in a walk after our shift. Unfortunately, it's a private course and there's no walking trail.

We'll have to investigate which courses have walking trails.

Annie, I really enjoy the Springwater Trail. I run it often with my training group. Sometimes we'll meet at OMSI, at the submarine, and then run out past Oaks Park to the Sellwood Riverfront Park before turning around and heading back into town. That's a great stretch!

Do you use another section of the trail? I need to expand my horizons past my 'usual' grounds I think.

If you'd like to start a thread in the Fitness forum for inviting people on a walk, that would be wonderful!

Any other team members want to do a Springwater Trail walk? A group certainly would be fun...if it's not raining...much...

Hey DEWEYSWAK emoticon we're in your neighborhood at least once a week going to WinCo! We live over behind Madison High School close to Rose City Golf Course.

We've walked Glendoveer many times, it's a favorite spot when it's dry LOL I'm hoping to be able to use the trail for some of my runs when things dry out a bit more. It's a great trail. Hopefully we can organize a walk in that area come spring.

Oh yeah, we love having the space, the fields, the trees and the quiet. You can get a good overhead satellite view on Google Maps. just type in Oxbow Regional Park and you will get the idea. I like to say that we live in the suburbs of the suburbs.

I shop at New Season's too; the one in Happy Valley once a week for fresh veggies.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

LMBO! You just taxed my mind. As I don't drive much and rarely cross the river (Willamette from west to east) I can only give directions on how to get somewhere down town by blocks, left and rights. I do know how to get to New Seasons in Raleigh Hills. If I didn't have to work I would love to be back in the country with goats, chickens and all those other wonderful friends.

Burnside Street is the dividing line between north and south.
The Williamette River is the dividing line between east and west
North Portland addresses are those that lie in that funny shaped area north of I84, west of I5 and east of the Williamette (and, of course, south of the Columbia River)
That's why my address starts with SE. But so do most of the addresses clear out to 502nd Ave which is way, way out in the toolies. After that most addresses start with "E"!

There are "areas" that have been given names but are not official postal sections-- the west hills area is divided between neighborhoods like Arlington Heights, Sylvan Highlands, Goose Hollow and probably many others that I am not familiar with, but the addresses there are still NW (for north of Burnside) and SW for south of Burnside.

So, I'm not sure how Wikipedia sorts it all out; I haven't looked at that. I'm just going from postal districts which, since they cover very large areas, makes getting together with spark friends a challenge. Possibly Wikipedia's divisions are easier for most Portland sparkers to deal with--more detail?

The closest areas (toward Portland) to me are Gresham/Troutdale/Fairview to my north and Damascus/Happy Valley/Clackamas to my west.

I live just a bit southeast of Oxbow park very near the Sandy River

Gaye, that's my hope, too! I don't want to split us off into separate groups, but yes having a tight core of neighborhood peoples would be a way to build a strong base for the larger group.

Annie, I was thinking of you when I started putting up areas/neighborhoods. I know you're further out than any of the areas include, but I consider you part of our NE neighborhood since you're on our end of town, such as it is. I think the 'SE' you're seeing on addresses is actually SE for Gresham/Troutdale/Sandy area maybe? which would be NE of Portland still.

I know, it's not a great sectioning (I pulled the info from Wikipedia, I admit) but it's a start. I'm ever-hopeful!

My local towns and communities aren't included in any of the lists you posted. Nothing really comes close. However, I am used to driving towards Portland sometimes to get what I need. Those lists must just include Portland Metropolitan areas and its outlying annexed communities. I do live in the Southeast section of the greater (much greater!) Portland area--at least everybody's address out here starts with "SE". But, when I head for Portland I normally go through Troutdale and take I84 (or Marine Dr when going to OFB). I only hit SE Portland if I need to go to the Milwaukee, Clackamas or Oregon City area.

Candy, we'll see if your idea takes off; it sure would be nice to see more participation.

Thanks to all who came to OFB and also to those who wanted to come but couldn't--you'll get there!

Now why didn't I think of that? Great idea Candy! I hope we can get more Portlanders together to do some fun, healthy, give back to the community stuff. maybe even arrange some walk/runs in neighborhoods.

This forum is being organized so you have a better chance of finding SparkPortland team mates who are close to your area. Portland is large and has many outlying communities, and we are close to 14,000 members strong.

I'm going to list the various neighborhoods of Portland. Find the one that corresponds to where you live and make a post. Hopefully, as more people become more active, we'll start making connections. It would be great if we could establish a co-leader for each region/neighborhood to represent for their Spark-Peeps!

**EDITED TO ADD**
If your neighborhood or area is not included in the appropriate section, please do add it to the list. I pulled the listing of neighborhoods from a website so I claim no solid knowledge of where everything is, or whether or not something should be included. Educate me!
