I was stuck in a wheel chair for months so I looked for seated exercises and when it was time to get up, walking was hard. Muscles had atrophied. I purchased Gentle Tai Chi online from Barnes and Noble Books, I started off seated as it gives you that option. From there I would stand for a few minutes on some of the routine, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 8 minutes and eventually the entire DVD just short of 20 minutes. I've used it since and it's so stuck in my head I do it while waiting for doctors. Once you get stuck in that little room, it is easily long enough to do the routine so I do it all the time. I have found a couple more harder ones since but I will never forget the one that got me out of that wheel chair.
Hugs,
Hope emoticon Slow and steady works for me.

All of these exercise programs are good. Ever body is different and has its own preference and limits. The best one is whichever one you enjoy enough to stick with that keeps you moving without hurting you. Muscle burn, yes, body and joint pain, no. You could use your computer to download the favorite parts of each one and make a disc with a little of yoga, taichi, and pilates that would give you a slow, moderate, heavy, moderate, slow workout. It would give you the heartrate benefit and the relaxing benefit all in one session. Make sure you end with the relaxing yoga moves. You will feel exillerated but relaxed and calm. Silence those undertones by concentrating on the actual moves and the muscles being worked. Wear some ear buds with nice relaxing spiritual music of your choice while you do the yoga movements. The undertones are probably spiritual ones but just not your spiritual preference. You'll have to add your own spirituality to your workouts with the tools of your faith. I am Christian, by the way. I understand what you are saying but you are after the health benefits and your faith can overcome their undertones.

I am visually impaired (prior to diabetes Dx) and find that attending many types of exercise groups or classes are really difficult for me. Since I have extremely low vision I can not see the movements of the instructor and learn each movement auditorily. Have found several small setting groups and very patient instructors and classmates through a local OLLI Program a near by College. Through this system I have learned chair yoga and basic tai Chi.
I do aqua-robics as well. At home with a supportive family they guide me through various Wii programs....so it is exercise and great giggles for ALL.

I love pilates! It makes me feel energized and I have become even more flexible since beginning. I never stiffened up even when I got older. I have always been flexible. My muscles feel tighter. After I finished pilates I feel relaxed.. With yoga balance is key I think. So my balance is off some what. I enjoy pilates more. Even though you don't burn as much as calories as a true cardio exercise it is till a winner.

I did yoga in a class for years. It is the best thing for my body. I had to stop the classes after back surgery left me with a weak and numb left leg. I have a yoga VHS it,s called yoga for round bodies. People think of yoga as pretzel poses done by emaciated people and back away from the moves that really help. When I was told to do PT they were amazed at my flexibility. I stretch my back and legs with yoga and as I use the videos on spark many of the stretches are yoga poses, just not called that.
I have Tai chi videos and I find them to be quite different from my yoga tapes and yet very similar. Tai Chi moves almost constantly I like the yoga so much better because I relax in the pose and it feels like i can isolate any muscle I want to work on and just be there with it for a while. I feel the healing begin when I go to the postures I know will help. I guess knowing what the poses are capable of is the key. I have never felt stiff after a yoga session just totally relaxed and feeling good.
Which one? you must choose both are good for the body and the muscles. Pat in Maine 67 years young and happy with my body image. Almost in the overweight range but feeling great despite the scale. emoticon

I don't believe inanimate objects are either good or evel. Cannles, essential oils, Off gases from new carpets, perfums, mold and asbestos to name a few, yes, -- but paper? Not unless the paint used in those painting give on toxins, lol Just my opinion!

I am still looking only into it! I love pilates. I have many dvd's there are no crazy undertones with them. There is a lady who is christian she does yoga that is Christ centered. She calls them praise moves. If I am ever able I will order some of her dvds ... I will . I was scolded harshly by a fellow youtube friend about the evils of yoga. Wow.. all I wanted to do was find some new exercises to mix things up for me. I did not nor want any crazy new age themes. No means was it my intention to turn things ugly here. We once was in darkness but we are children of light. We should show christ love even with those who are not of faith. We should be salt in every situation. emoticon emoticon .

SavedByGrace, My best friend is a very Christian lady and is a Yoga Instructor /Personal Trainer. She keeps her classes' meditations Christ focused and when she's got a class full of "heathens" (if you will, for a lack of the more PC things to call them) she used all of the synonyms for God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit that she can, but she doesn't force her beliefs on anyone. Yoga exercise is what you make of them and who and what you have your focus on.

I'm getting ready to break out the Tai Chi DVD I bought a while back and actually right using it, between all my current health opportunities, I'm starting to lose mobility and I think this should be a good option.

They have some Tai Chi on Public Television in our area now (I think it just started here), but it is on at about 4 a.m. I have only caught it one time because I am always waking in the middle of the night.

Hello !

Been using Tai Chi for over 6 years now and love it. I started after a fall and reconstruction of my right ankle. After the cast came of I could not restart my workouts so started Tai Chi.
Now since with Spark, I use it when stressed, after cardio and some times before bed.
Would recommend Tai Chi to anyone limited with mobility as well as great for seniors.

i have been doing tai chi for several years now..in the beginning i had some back twinges but within a few weeks those disappeared (mostly because i tended to over stretch the postures)
i was not able to exercise any for three months and just started back with the docs permission..was having trouble with eye pressures and all work ceased..even the trots up the stairs i had to be quiet..the ban on everything has been lifted just this week and tai chi is my favorite 45 minutes of the day..and then i have 30 minutes meditation..that's all i have persmission to do at present and will be even glad when i get the go-ahead to get back on my gazelle

i can do that, but not on a tuesday
for that is my day of thrust in the opposite direction -
off the starboard bow
over the hurdles,
and down the shute.

last is just the slowest winner. c.hunter boyd

people often say that motivation doesn't last. well neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily. zig ziglar

Thank you so much for posting this information! I've never tried tai chi but have always been interested in learning more. The article has "sparked" my interest. I have read in other articles the benefits of aerobic breathing. Wondering if this is a separate tai chi class?

My doctor keeps telling me I need to exercise to lose weight to help my blood sugar but with COPD I can't do a lot of movement. I found this excellent Tai Chi/Chi Gong DVD that is fantastic for seniors and for those who have a difficult time moving a lot. Many of the exercises show the sitting down version as well. Check it out at
http://www.shouldersdown.com/id14.html I really love it!

I don't know if this would be the right place, but I got this link today on research on Tai Chi and how it affects diabetes (and BP).

Does anyone here do this? If so, does it help you with your numbers? I tried it once, but had to quit during the middle because my back got hurting too bad. But it looks interesting enough to try some more.
