It varies from person to person depending on stride length, but 2000 is about average for a person of average height.
I started out with nowt and I've still got most of it.

I am going to look for my old pedometer. That says it all. I walked around at a fishing expo for four hours yesterday. Wish I knew how far I walked.

Gosh I Love My Fitbit !!!! I often look at it to see where I am thru out the day... Some times I'm right on track and Sometime I need to get my buttocks (as Forrest would say) Moving !!!! The new Fitbit One syncs wirelessly when I walk past my iPhone, iPad or computer. Love the sleep tracker... I highly recommend getting one. You're Welcome for the TU...

A mile is about 2000 steps. Five miles is about 10,000 steps. Wear a pedometor or Fit Bit and you will be surprised how easy it is to get those steps in during a normal day. Simple things like walking for five mins during your breaks and lunch, shopping in big box stores even when you don't want to buy, and always park in the back parking spot all add up quickly.

Pattie, great info on walking site. Thanks for sharing, and doing it so quickly. Great informative site.
So it is just over 2000 steps to a mile ..IF, you have an average stride. Yikes..mine is shorter! I don't count now..not walking enough to make a difference. But I just try to walk more. Also thinking about getting a FitBit or better pedometer, I think it might motivate me to do better.

I was told, also, that 2,000 steps = 1 mile As mentioned, it DOES vary +/- that amt. of steps depending on your stride. Assuming you're using a pedometer to meaasure your steps, generally in setting it up, you have to figure out your stride.
Good luck! Excellent goal.
