let me tell you a little story (and this happened last week and i was there) i have a friend who was shot in the foot with a shotgun at age 16 they managed to save most of her big toe as the others were mostly ok..the lady is now 74 years old and she has to wear orthopaedic shoes in the range of 600 a pair and no medicare because she is not diabetic so she pays the entire cost
the toe suffered a spontaenous fracture mid june..she has been on crutches ever since she saw the doc and it will be the middle of september until she sees the doc again..meantime this hugely active woman is sitting and doing nothing going crazy
i took her to see my foot specialist for a second opinion..she fought it all the way kicking and screaming as she is wont to do but she went..he saw her 2 days after i asked him to..took xrays and bought them back on his computer and spent an hour with her gooing over options and telling her exactly what he could do..not oly can he extend and make that toe straight with a bone graft it will prevent further damage as there is a huge amount of arthritic tissue that can be renewed and she will be able to wear shoes off the rack with only inserts orthopeadics as i stressed to her has come a long way in 50 years and he treated her as a person and not as a foot (as i knew he would) she is getting ready for that and clearing her calendar..and whined about the 8 to 10 weeks healing time with no weight on that foot and i looked at her and told her 2 1/2 months now on crutches and you are whining about 8 to 10 weeks for a straight foot??? it is her miracle for sure..you need a doc that sees you as a patient and not a statistic and to get that you have to make demands that it be so..i meet with incoming interns at a large medical school and i talk about them seeing me as a person and not as whatever it is they are looking at me for i always get questions lots of them and it is full circle for me there as i am in the system since the age of three..they no longer see me as that deaf person but as hearing as everyone else and if i don't i ask PEOPLE NEED TO BE PROACTIVE WITH THEIR DOCS YOU GET BETTER SERVICE and wow if they don't listen they aren't getting my money for sure

One other thing to consider when taking meds of any kind is that they make the other organs work harder, suck as the kidneys and liver.

So I agree with everyone else, your doctor must make sure you really need something before prescribing it, escpecially with the potential for complications that could arise.

The problem with many of today's doctors is that many feel that the patients don't follow a prescribed treatment plan, or they just blindly do what they are told. But this is your body and you need to know what is going on, and if that means questioning the doctor, so be it.

I hope you are able to convince this doctor that you are not just asking to be difficult, but you really do need to know what is going on in your body - not his/hers but YOURS.

Oh... another thing you might consider is calling your insurance company and telling them what your doctor has done and ask them for a referral or permission to see another doctor due the lack of concern of your present doctor. .... that kind of medication should never be given like you doctor did so the insurance company may help you.

it's too bad you have a doc that is so insecure that she can start to reaty you for diabetes and prescribe all this hoohah but not be willing to refer you to a diabetes specialist..i surely would be seeking another doctor
the lady mary
the funny thing is my docs are all connected..i saw a diabetes specialist then her referred me to a dibatic apthalmologist and referred me to a primary cary and a cardiologist and a nephrologist and a podiatrist and the list goes on even a therapist..he has no problems having other docs treat me for the myriad of things i have going on and because it is a huge medical center (the docs get a paycheck every two weeks like everyone else according to their specialty and whether or not they are teaching professors)
and me i get the best of everything as i am in that computer and if one doc runs tests all the answers are available to all the others and they don't redo the testing it saves money for them and medicare i don't miss appointments and i waste no one's time for sure and they are always glad to see me..for a long while i didn't see primary care but i was being seen by neurology and nephrology and my doctors had access to what was happening with me no one fells threatened because i don't see them for awhile..i would have a talk with that doc and find out why she won't refer me

Thanks for the concern about the Neurontin. I have not taken any. Like you guys I am fearful of the side affects. I have been trying to get in to see a diabetes dr but my reg dr won't give me a referral which is needed. This new dr I have seen only once and I am supposed to go back for a re check in a few weeks. I am going to see if she will refer me. I don't even like being on the Metformin right now but will have to until these BS levels are controlled naturally. I am doing better..just a slow process.

Thank you Kathy! As I said my husband is on it after many test by his doctor and they are still scheduling him for more testing to double and triple check him they have him schedule for extensive nerve testing in January so a doctor that does not test before putting someone on it concerns me greatly.

I agree about the neurontin. Diabetic neuropathy isn't the only thing that causes the kind of pain you describe. I have personal experience that bears this out, so I KNOW! LOL

I have fibromyalgia, as well as the diabetic neuropathy, and my NEUROLOGIST is hedging about prescribing neurontin at the stage I'm in... he's sort of holding onto the idea until the "time is right"...

It is often prescribed for neuropathic pain issues, but with caution, and there are a LOT of side effects and some risk involved--and if you're not seeing a specialist, and with no testing or anything, how does your doctor even know that's the problem??

I'd be asking for a referral if it were me...

Do you see an actual diabetic doctor or general doctor? I just question the neurotin as that is strong stuff... my husband is on it for it MAJOR nerve pain... and I have had all kinds of serious problems and my doctor want to do extensive testing before putting me on meds like that... As far as you other results that is great news.
I am not a doctor, or anything like that but I have a very long extensive personal experience with neurotin not just with my husband but my father and father in law ...... I am just concerned that your doctor did no testing and put you on it.... Please consider another opinion and ask for testing.

Thank-you for all the support and feedback. I went and saw the dr today. She thinks my dizziness is a combination of adjusting to lower BS levels and also my sinus/allergies...I have some fluid behind my ears so she gave me an antibiotic. As for my body pains I have all the time she believes it is some diabetic neuropathy. She put me on a low dose of neurontin at bedtime.Good news is I have lost 7 lbs since my last visit which was 3 weeks ago and all my bloodwork came back good. Last time my cholesterol was a bit high but it is now normal too...Thank-you clean eating lol!!! We will see how I do and have another check up in 8 weeks. Oh she also said to stay with the 500mg Metformin but take it twice a day rather than just at night. I love Sparkpeople and all the support it really did help when I was so worried. Thanks guys!!!

First congratulations on getting your blood sugars under control!! That is great!

Many doctors place their patients on small doses of blood pressure meds to protect the kidneys. If your doctor has started BP meds for you they could also be causing the dizziness. A drop or elevation in blood sugar will cause dizziness and other symptoms. I have taken Metformin for the past 10 years. Not sure if one of the side effects is dizziness. Best to see you MD. Good luck! Carol

that is true but she does have an appointment on tusday and so she has contacted the docs office so he does have an idea..it's hard sometimes to get things done when everytime you stand up and move the world goes round and round i spent 18 mmonths with that happening every single time i got up i was homebound and being deaf made it even worse because i have no balance already and i worked with the doc for a long time trying to figure out the reasons..so i will wait until tuesday to hear from her again and see if the problem is solved drink the water and watch what you eat carefully to try and keep that blood sugar under control

I didn't take my metformin last night cause I was too tired to get up. Today I have not had any of that extreme dizziness..hmmmm. I might try a 500mg tonight instead of 1000mg and see how I feel tommorow.

talk to the doc for sure..some peole do have your symtoms when their blood sugars have been high and they are coming to withing normal range again but the doc needs to know that for sure..this isn't a disease that remains the same always..there are forever ups and downs all over the place sometimes and those are dependant upon a lot of factors and need adjustments especially in the beginning

You need to talk to your doctor about any changes.... plain and simple. They will do more blood work and adjust anything they need to . Call the doctor.... it may not be your sugar at all but blood pressure. The doctor needs to know about this.

When I began on metformin I was told 500 every 12 hours, you might want to question that with your Dr.
I was supposed to go up to 1,000 twice daily but instead I joined Spark and now I take no diabetes medications since I am able to control it with food.

Are you taking any blood thinners, or other medications. Often there is a label on Rx Bottles that say causes dizzyness. Do not stand up from a sitting or lying position too fast. Stand up slowly .

Check with your Dr or diabetres educator or pharmacist I want answers from my Dr preferably but any side effects should be questioned and answered that is how you learn to live with health conditions. Take care. You are in a good place using Spark I know i am.

If your body is used to high blood sugar levels, it is common for normal blood sugar to feel like a low. Keeping your sugars in the normal range will allow your body to readjust and stay healthy.

Hi I have type 2 and have had levels in the 200's mostly. Recently they have been normal in the 90's or low 100's. I started taking Metformin 1000mg only at night about a week or so ago. During the day I am having a lot of dizziness and feel light headed and shaky. Do you think my body is just adjusting to normal sugar ranges and this will pass? If I eat peanutbutter it goes away..but I want my numbers healthy...any input on this will be helpful..thanks
