Jersey....yet another piece of the puzzle I didn't know. Thank you. I'm glad I'm not a mouthwash fan like others in my family.

BTW-I am doing much better. My sugar numbers have come down and I've been very diligent about taking care of myself. I am very conscious of everything I touch so as not to spread anything and taking the probiotic I believe has helped.

Thank you to all who have offered advice, wisdom, experiences and support. I could not and don't wish to do this alone. emoticon

One more thought - just precautionary. Because of diabetics propensity for yeast infections we have to be careful with mouthwashes that kill off bacteria. Some of the bacteria that is killed is good bacteria that keeps the yeast at bay. Yeast infections of the mouth can be nasty.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.

Cranberry juice saved my life once while camping with a bladder infection. We had to drive 25 miles of windey, mountain roads to find a store. They had two bottles left and I bought them both. Doc said if I hadn't done that I might have ended up with a kidney infection. It was just awful.

I wanted to update everyone. Thanks to Valerie, I went out and bought the Florastor and then checked in with my Dr. (through a web portal which is so cool to ask questions, get refills and request appts.) if she thought it was OK to take the Florastor. I also had one Fluconazole pill left from my Nov. nightmare which is a one-dose remedy for yeast. She said all sounded good and to eat yogurt once a day.

I took the Fluconazole, have been taking the Florastor 2 x day and eating my yogurt. I have managed to stop the progression of the yeast getting any worse and feel that if I keep up the yogurt and Florastor, I will be OK. My numbers are still high and that is the reason the yeast is flourishing, per my Dr. She says the high numbers are likely due to stress (my job) and that I need to be extra careful with my diet and exercise regime.

Anyways, this is forever a learning experience and I so appreciate everyone chiming in on this topic. This disease is really all about how YOU manage it and learning all the little things that can make a huge difference in that management.

Thanks again for all the support. And, please if anyone else sees this topic and wants to comment, it is always appreciated.

Best,
Bonnie

Actually, cranberry juice has something in it that helps prevent bacteria from clinging to mucus membranes, and it changes the pH balance too, so that's how it helps to prevent the overgrowth of fungi...

I had this aweful problem with yeast infection dr prescribed a pill duflcan or something like that. The pill cost 42.00 and did nothing....OTC medication cream and suppositories did much better than that 42 dollar pill. I was desperate and on a tight budget.

My Dr says drink cranberry juice for Bladder or kidney problems.
Yogurt and probiotics help with yeast infections. There is a Nyaststin powder if it is in the armpiuts, groin creases or under the breasts these were the worst places to treat.
If it is a Systemic infection My allergist and OB/GYN wanted me to use the Nyastatin
Ketaconazole.
Take care it was one of the wost experiences really. I even had to use Gentian Violet, a very old remedy for this but it worked. I do not think it is in use any more. Pat in Maine

Hi Ladies
I have never had a yeast infection, but my doctor had told me if I ever get 1 to try drinking cranberry juice. It will be sour, but it sometimes helps. So every 3 months, I get cranberry juice anyway. I like the Ocean Spray brand. the tartness breaks up the yeast and I hope I never get an yeast infection. Just giving my opinion and what my doctor said.

I lived with yeast infections for years no-one ever connected it to diabetes but they sure did connect it to Sugar and YEAST.
I was tested for Candidiasis after a 100 hour fast from Sunday to Friday. I did not want to go to Florida to be tested so my local allergist did it all.
I was put on a rotation diet and gave up fruit and yeast, nothing fermented, and nothing with yeast in it.
I went 12 years without bread and minimal fruit. I also gave myself shots.
It has been a very long time since I had any type of yeast (Candidiasis) and was diagnosed type 2 years later. Perhaps had they tested earlier things would have been different for me.
I still avoid sugar, I do eat fruit but I rarely eat anything with yeast in it.
If it ever comes back i will just ask for NYASTATIN.
I had yeast everywhere and taking that was the biggest releif. I am so glad those years are over. You might look at the Candidiasis site, they were v ery helpful for me.HUGS Pat in Maine.

Health food stores always carry probiotics too... so if the stuff you're looking for isn't available, try looking for acidophilus--preferably the refrigerated kind, they are like gelcaps...

Thrush is another version of yeast/fungus that thrives with diabetics... I've been advised by my dentist NOT to use an anti-bacterial mouthwash, but to just be sure to floss between my teeth and brush regularly--including my tongue! Feels weird, but it works... emoticon lol

Thanks Valerie. I did some research and read some reviews. It's worth a try. We don't have Whole Foods here :( but web says Wal-Mart carries it. I also printed out a $5 off Coupon.

Thanks again for all the help.

Oh and it doesn't help my yeast problem when the temp in almost 90 and the humidity is stifling! emoticon

Yes, my dad contracted C-diff (a very nasty, potentially fatal intestinal bacteria) in a rehab facility after surgery. The doctor put him on Florastor for the rest of his life. He buys it at Whole Foods. Here's a link but check out the alternative name for it to ask at your local health food store.

Wow, that was fast. i was so worried no one would reply! Thank you all.

Come to think of it, normally I eat plain, non-fat Greek yogurt daily with a dash of vanilla and a packet of splenda. I work at a University and this time of year is crazy. I have been out of yogurt (and a few other things!) so have not been eating it.

I have the day off work so am going grocery shopping and will stock up and resume my morning yogurt snack.

You all have been so helpful and kind to share your experiences and knowledge with me. Just when you think you are getting a handle on this disease, you get another curveball thrown at you. Uggh!

You can also go to a place like Whole Foods and ask for a good probiotic to take every day, which helps to balance the good bacteria.

WINEFRID explained it well. You could also have a yeast overgrowth in your gut. Do you eat yogurt? That helps replenish the good flora in the gut. If you're seeing these symptoms again, and they're not going away, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get checked out again.

Because our bodies are so sensitive to high blood sugars, we are more prone to fungal, bacteria and yeast infections. **SIGH**

I've had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years. When I was diagnosed, I was told, "now you'll get yeast infections all the time because they're common in diabetics."

Well, yes and no. If your blood sugar is out of control, yeast enjoys thriving on the sugar in your system. If you keep your blood sugar in check, like I do, you're no more inclined to get yeast infections than the next person.

I've had ONE yeast infection in 20 years and that was when my pump became disconnected and I wound up in the hospital with DKA. My blood sugar was over 480 for several hours.

In the meantime, a small amount of plain, live culture yogurt in your daily diet might be recommended. Even though it shows sugar on the label, it's a form of sugar (lactic acid or lactose, I think) that doesn't raise your blood sugar nearly the way a sweetened food would. But truly, plain yogurt! You can add a bit of extracts or spices or flavorings but I wouldn't add fruit or any sugar. The last thing your body needs at this point is excess sugar.

Good luck,
Valerie

Yeast and diabetes are connected. As I understood the connection was that yeast feeds on sugar, so when one's sugar levels are high, yeast flourishes. However, if you get an infection, that infection can cause your levels of blood sugar to go out of whack. Stress can also cause level to fluctuate. You may want to do more research. I find that even things that haven't really been explored can affect blood sugar. I have trouble with heat. I am fine in the winter, but as the temperture rises, my blood sugar is harder to control. The best advice I can give is to get a notebook and keep track of your meal, blood sugar average for the day, moods, pain level, illness, exercise, anything that you can think of. Then pay attention to trends in your individual results. The better you know yourself. The more you can have control. Best of luck.

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this question. My initial T2 diagnosis was a result of my having a staph infection in my ear last summer. It started with itchy ears in August, then spread to my eyes and outside my mouth. It took 6 Dr. visits and a trip to the ER for someone to finally do a culture of my ear fluid to find out that I had this horrible staph infection that spread to the inside of my face. My family doc told me about the connection some people have to high levels of yeast and diabetes.

Question, I'm starting to have the same itchy spots again and do have some meds for this. Could this be the reason my FBS numbers have been higher than normal for the last two weeks? Would the presence of higher than normal yeast in my body cause this? I'm so perplexed on why my morning #'s are up. I've lost a lot of weight, am exercising and eating properly,

Anyone with advice or who has experienced this please post. I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks,
Bonnie
