Add your BMR and cals burned together, then minus the cals you ate, that shows your cal differential (2286 + 1300 - 1800 = -1786). There is a report you can generate under 'My Trackers' tab then 'Reports' to calculate this for you as long as you've tracked everything. You may just need to double check that the BMR they show in the report is accurate, some members have mentioned that the BMR being used in the report was too high. Also, your BMR will change as your weight does. The report will automatically recalculate it as you update your weight on here but if its not accurate to begin with you'll have to recalculate your BMR yourself each time.

Pounds lost or gained in May: OK so May was a right off. I started taking a new med for nerve pain caused by a slipped cervical disc. The good news is that I am pain free for the first time since last August. The bad news is one of the side effects is weight gain. And feeling better makes me feel like cooking and the beautiful weather we have had the last few days (after a cold and miserable May) makes me want to barbecue. So here we go again!!!!

This is my first time ever!! I love this idea! Keeps me accountable. Just finishing off from gaining 20 lbs after breaking my leg and having complications after surgery for some pin removal. I am ready for this! Want to fit into my summer clothes and not have to buy new.
I am not sure how to get the template for this but I will post everyday.

I'm just joining this group. Sounds great! - True - so many other things can mess up the numbers on the scale. At least this is one thing we do have control over. Thank you for setting it up so easily!

Another thing I had been doing incorrectly was using my height I had always been since a teenager. To my shock and horror I have shrunk by 1 1/2 inches. therefore, my BMR had been set too high for my current height.

This is scary for me, but I will give it a try. At the beginning of this challenge thread, I read about the BMR. I figured it out, and by my calculations, there is a 300 calorie difference between what the SparkPage puts me at and what I figured out, so I have to eat 300 less calories than what it says in order to keep working towards my weight loss goal. Thanks for that tip!

For me the SP formula to calculate it myself was 1750 when I went externally and did it it was 2400 and the tracker that you linked us to on my SP reports has me at 2075! Like you said, trial and error! I have trouble eating healthy over 1400 calories (I have to resort to junk to get my calories in which I don't like!). But, of course, if you eat too few calories you won't lose weight because you are starving yourself! Trial and error! I will have to eat more avocados (delicious - are they higher calories or just higher fat!?!)...thanks for showing that report, I didn't know it existed!

Can someone tell me what BMR? I have just started reading the posts and cannot make sense of anything because I do know what a BMR is or how it is calculated or where to go to find ...

Trust me, my weight was VERY stagnant! By modifying my BMR (and I'll continue to modify as I lose weight), my weight is finally coming down.

Thanks for the tip! I have just returned from vacation and gained weight :( I think I will try this challenge for June! I find that even when I journal my food and treadmill 40 mins a day I should be able to lose half a lb in a week.

When I read the above link at the beginning of May 2013, something clicked in my head when it said that my numbers may not be right. I was eating right, I was exercising right, but my weight was so slow in coming down.

Therefore, I went about looking at my numbers more closely. Something was bothering me - my BMR seemed quite elevated for my age group (it is at 1619 on Spark People). So I looked for a BMR calculation right here on Spark People. Once I calculated it, I found that my actual BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) was 1345, a difference of 274! And to add to the information, we need to recalculate our BMRs as we lose weight. On the 20th of May, I started doing my own calculations with the new numbers at hand and did not rely on the Spark People report. I'm happy to report that my weight went down and from the 20th, I did lose 2 lbs. If your weight is stagnant, I suggest the following:

1. Recalculate your BMR (and if it seems correct on the Spark People, then continue with their report)
2. Calculate your Daily Calorie Differential this way:
Calories eaten:
BMR: put your number here
Calories burnt:
(Add the BMR and Calories burnt and subtract to get your Daily Calorie Differential.)
Daily Calocie Differential:

For me it has been working. Finally, I have been seeing the scale number going down.

Don't forget to recalculate your BMR as you lose weight!

This will be our fifth month using the Daily Calorie Differential. There are numerous reasons why we donít lose weight: menstrual cycle, certain health issues, food intake slightly too high, etc. That is why we are here at Spark People to find out what works for each individual. Itís a bit like trial and error. I cannot deny that this is helping ME immensely. It reminds and encourages me to exercise more and eat less so that my differential will be better as the month goes on. I sort of think ahead before I put in that extra piece of food in my mouth.

Knowing your Daily Calorie Differential can make all the difference in your weight loss. You can also put in the point system used with Weight Watchers if this works for you. On this thread, just put down your score on a daily basis. If you're like me, I have a pad beside my computer where I insert all my information so if you don't have time to insert on a daily basis, do it when you have a bit more time.

Remember, to lose one pound, you need to burn 3500 calories (average of eating 500 calories less per day).

For your information, to get your Daily Calorie Differential, you need to go to MY TRACKERS above, scroll down to Report and here you will find this report. You do need to input your exercises done for the day and also have logged in all your food. SP calculates this amount for you. Isn't Spark People just the greatest?
