I have lots of sticky notes on pages of this book to try the recipes but haven't yet. I bought this book second hand and note one recipe in the index Salsa Zucchini Salad that the person wrote 'bad' by it. That is the only recipe that is marked. In the front of the book there are about 10 recipes listed but no notations on the recipe. It sure take a long time to read the written chapters before you get to the recipes.

I know what you mean by the doughy in the Bubble Pizza. I always have to bake mine longer so I don't think its your oven. I take a fork and peek at the middle and bake longer if needed. I also use a pyrex pie plate so I can see how the bottom is baking.

I just tried the Creamy Mashed Potatoes and the Frozen Yogurt Tarts along with the Salisbury Steaks from HE and some peas. that meal pegged the comfort food meter for sure! The mash was very good and the horseradish in them went well with the beef. just be easy on using the correct amount as it can get a bit strong. the tarts were ok. it is made with yogurt, apricot spread, cool whip and maybe something else, I can't remember, and it reminded me of a buttermilk peach ice cream we used to make. it needed to be a little more creamy and needs to be left out of the freezer longer than 15 min IMO. mine were frozen solid at dinnertime.

Oh, I did try the Corn-Zucchini Sauté the other day and this is an excellent side dish. we all loved it. I cooked the zucchini until just done and it was a very nice change from the usual veg. A must try. 4-5 stars.

This was one of my first HE cookbooks (along with Man In Mind). How I wish I had brought them along to have her autograph when she was in Portland.

Some of my favorites:

Lifesaver Soup, pg. 234 ****+
Frosted Orange Salad, pg. 241 ****
Polynesian Carrot Salad, pg. 243 ****
Bubble Pizza, pg. 256 *** (sometimes biscuits turn out doughey- could be my oven?)
Norweigen Burgers with Mushroom Sauce, pg. 263 ***
Dwayne's Coconut Banana Chocolate Cream Pie, pg. 271 ****
Breakfast Bread Pudding, pg. 281 ****+ (love this!)

I have always meant to try Paradise Yogurt, pg. 291 and haven't gotten to it yet. This would be a good month to try it.

I agree with you 100 percent. This is a book that I believe is almost essential to weight loss, if you haven't found the key yet. I believe her ideas in this book are the true key to weight loss and life long success.

I have a lot I like in this book too. I'm still trying to get back in line from vacation, but when I can get back here I'll list what I've tried!

HELP is such a good book. not only for recipes and menus, but also in understanding the Healthy Exchanges program JoAnna created. There is a lot of help with our journey's both mentally and physically in the pages. I feel I can almost walk with JoAnna as the book is presented on a personal level. I believe its a must have. Like JoAnna says, "Its not a diet, its a way of life."

I haven't tried too many recipes, but here are the reviews of the few we've tried:

Deli Coleslaw p.239 -this is our fave coleslaw. we love the addition of bell pepper and the dressing is just right. 5 stars

Twice-Baked Potatoes p.254 -we LOVE these! I have combined this recipe with Sour Cream Baked Potatoes from Across America in the way of instead of parmesan, I use cheddar. I also added 1 tsp dried onion flakes, bacon bits, and sprinkled the tops with paprika. 5+ stars!

Bubble Pizza p.256 -this easy peasy pizza type dish is such a winner. I added 1 1/2 tsp of sausage seasoning to the meat. I also sprinkled some diced ham or bacon bits, green onion, and canned sliced mushrooms. Mine bakes longer than the 12-15 mins per directions, it takes about 23 - 25 mins. 4 stars.

Lemon Pancakes with Blueberry Sauce p.288 - we love the flavors of lemon and blueberry and this is such a treat! 4 stars.

Party Mix p.252 - our fave mix. perfect for the holidays.

Potato Chips p.293 -this is a fun recipe. kinda gets involved, but makes good chips. I suggest you have a mandoline to slice them thin. not too many can be cooked in the microwave at a time. there is a hint that suggests baking them in the oven, I'll try that next time. 4 stars for taste and texture. 2-3 stars for the prep. its one of those special recipes you make to experiment IMO.
