Hello,

I am new to this team. I am a new nurse, having only been a RN for a year and a half now. I have worked in the hospital on an inpatient hospice/med/surg unit for the last year, and just started a new job with developmentally disabled adults in a group home setting. I am going to school online for my RN to BSN through Aspen University and should be done in about 6 months! It is a busy time for me, but decided I need to put my health higher on the list of priorities. So, here we go!

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Phil. 4:13

I am a home care nurse and I absolutely love it! I work in a rural setting so in any given day I can see pediatrics, post-op, geriatrics, mental health, and palliative. It is such a rewarding job and I love seeing people in their own home. It shifts the power for change into their hands!

I went back to college when I was 35 years old. I would have never thought I would have been a nurse when I was in high school. I took typing, filing, short hand. I loved business Ed class. I didn't go to college, I did have a scholarship, for music but didn't take it. I met my then boyfriend, now husband the summer before my senior year. So of course all I knew was that I was in love. I was at home watching my 3 kids, watching other wonderful kids starting a daycare in my home. So I took a CPR class from our fire station, and one of my friends who was an EMT talked me into taking the EMS class at the college (2 nights a week) they would pay for it if I passed. That class got me in into the hospital for clinical studies. It was all God's plan for my life, and His planned timing. I waited until my youngest went into kindergarten when I went back to college. I took the 2 year program, but took it in 3 years so I could take all the non nursing classes first. My brain hadn't been dusted off for a very long time. I am a RN who started out working the floor of a small hospital of a 30 bed med/surgical/telemetry floor then went to a 20 bed med/ surgical floor. That was full time so that was wonderful day- evening 8 hour shift. Then I went to weekend package 3 day 12 hour - busy 40 bed cardiac unit. Loved that fast paced unit! Worked there for 7 years. I only left due to management reasons. My last job was for Homecare/ hospice - worked there 5 years. I am now no longer working. Which makes me sad. I am trying to get disability. My back is just fried. I am on pain medication. I need to take it first thing in the morning. I am pretty good then. The only thing I would do different with my career, I would have kept I going with my Bachlor degree. Now just to work the floor you have to have your BS degree. Ridiculous. I did not get mine because I wanted to work with the patients, n be behind a desk, or teach. Oh well... This is or was me. Sorry this got so long

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

I am a nursing student graduating in May of this year and new to SparkPeople also! Not sure what specialty I will end up in yet- interested in the OR, pediatrics, oncology, allergy, and outpatient psych. Kind of hard to narrow it down more when your rotations to specialty areas are short!

Good Morning,

I've been an RN for almost 8 years & have worked as an ICU nurse, school nurse & 7 mo ago switched back to the hospital setting as an ER nurse. Most days make me crazy, but it is challenging & I am learning a lot. A fellow nurse recently told me that I would be comfortable after 5 years, lol...

Coming back to SP to feel better & have more energy! Got too sedentary as a school nurse & now I'm on my feet for the whole shift & it's exhausting.

Anyone from Indiana?

Have a great day!

Been a nurse for over 40 years and am planning my exit strategy. I think I'll be able to walk away and never look back. The profession has changed so much and some of it has not been good.

I like the professionalism, the increasing need to upgrade our skills. I like that we are important parts of the health care team.

I do not like that we are treated in much the same way as we were 40 years ago in most places. I do not like that we are paid a "pink collar" wage.

In my state, there is a proposition to add a "fee" to our licenses (and that of doctors and hospitals) to help fund medicaid. This is a part of what is coming.

Walking away is going to be much easier than I would have thought ten years ago.

I am an LPN........... Began in acute care facility ..... Intensive Care. ..... Many challenges but loved it.
I work in a very large Orthopedic clinic ....... 23 Orthopedists .... 16 surgeons. Approximately 500 to 600 people come in daily. I began when the clinic opened 7 years ago; first year as Triage nurse. Am presently changing and transitioning into a new position .... Life is never dull and I love to keep learning.

I am a new Adult Nurse Practitioner (graduated last year), and I currently work with a socioeconomically disadvantaged geriatric population providing them both primary and urgent care services. Prior to completing my NP, I was an OR Nurse (circulating, scrub) for 7 years with a focus on GYN and GYN oncology. I also completed my RNFA (registered nurse first assist), and I have worked with both Urology and GYN surgery as a first assistant! Assisting is so much fun and I truly miss it! I love the patients that I currently serve, but hope I can find a position some day that will be a good balance of OR and office visit time with an oncology focus. I would also like to teach BSN students. Until then, I'll soak up all the learning experiences I can!

We do need to nurture our new nurses. Or at least stop eating them and accept their presence and differences! I am a Perinatal Nurse who also has my MSN to teach new nurses. I can get really bad on the floor some days depending on who is working. My thought is I want to make sure the new nurses can take care of me someday. I don't want to breed resentment and animosity so they do not take care of their "older generation"!

I know what you mean, I did Critical care (ICU) for over 25 years. Then, things changed, our work tripled, the new staff we not experienced and we were written up if we stayed late to complete our charting, etc. . . . I am doing rehab at the local VA and just love the work. My guys are an inspiration to work with. This is my last job before I retire.

I did Hospice Nursing for about 18 years before I made this switch. the patients didn't burn me out. the company, and the amount hours we had to do at the end to do the same job for triple the patients just killed me.

Hi! I am a Hospice nurse for about 8 years now. Before that I was in Quality Insurance and med-surge at a local hospital. Nursing was not a career I had wanted or inspired to get, it just sort of happened. However I am grateful to have it in this day & age. I will always be employed!

Pediatric Nurse, mostly teach clinicals now. Prefer to adjunct. Tried full-time faculty; lasted long enough for contract to be ready and said, "No, thanks." Part-time only, worked full-time for first 5 years of career. Work 2 shifts a month at The Children's Center, a specialty hospital for medically fragile children.
PEDS ROCKS, adults not so much!!!!
Have MSN and a Faith Community Nurse also.

Hi there! I'm an LPN working in Labor & Delivery providing NRP to the newborns and also post-partum couplet care. Love it! Been in L&D since 2010 when I graduated from my PN program. I'm also currently enrolled in school working toward my RN and will hopefully, someday graduate! BLAH!!! The whole work/school fulltime thing is no fun, as I'm sure many of you already know!! I generally do 12 hour night shifts but we flip flop sometimes and I'm stuck being awake during daylight hours. :) I spent about 9 months in Long Term Care facilities between two L&D jobs and that was hell! Thankful for the job I have now!!

I am a medically retired RN after 35 years in nursing. I worked Med-Surg, Surgical ICU, Army Health clinic, ICU/CCU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab and Interventional Radiology, I loved working with my fellow nurses but mostly I enjoyed teaching and educating my patients so they could better advocate for themselves in their health care.

A good one! I'm a psych nurse (behavioral, mental health) at an outpatient clinic associated with a multi-state health system. I love the patient education I do, whether it's about meds, mental health diagnoses, or just plain life in general. I'm committed to ending the stigma associated with mental illness.
