Last Saturday, with great optimism and ambition, I joined a hike led by an herbalist, at a local county park. Note the word 'hike'. Up Montara Mountain. Yes. I did. While I'm proud of myself for attempting and succeeding with this excursion (although once committed, completing the 3 mile loop trail was sort of necessary to get back to civilization) , I will need a few more days to recover before I can get back to much more physical activity. Just walking around is good for now. My hips and low back, neck and hands are not happy with me at all. But I did it!

So my goal this week is to ease back into the stretching and maybe the stair stepping, as my body allows. I took my dog for a walk yesterday, but we only made it to the corner and back.

So far I've gotten through the work day pretty well. So far.

I didn't do so well last week. I just couldn't remember to eat fruit or get enough water. When I drink several cups of coffee a day, it seems to discourage my water drinking.

This week I'm simply going to count how many cups of "liquid" I get each day. And I'm going to concentrate on posting all the foods I eat in the Nutrition section of SP's website.

3 minutes of stair stepping (on my stairs at home, up and down 2 or 3 steps) today. Not sure my body liked it too much, but I need to do this.

Stretching is next, before bed.

I did ok today, I think. Tomorrow will take care of itself, for now.

New goals, as my old one needed to be modified. I plan to do 10 minutes of focused stretching at least 3 days per week. I plan to do at least 2 minutes of stair stepping 3 days per week. I think I can do this. I believe that increasing my physical activity will help me get past this blasted plateau and break another 'zero' barrier.

Nancy, I am feeling better, thanks. I have a short work week ahead, and plan to rest up, as after that, through March, my work schedule is going to be far busier than I like. Just gotta get through March, then things will settle down again for a couple of months.

New week: change your challenge goal or add to your old one.

I'm going to add to my old one, so for the next week, I'll be drinking four glasses of water (8 oz), eating at least one serving of fruit and at least one serving of vegetables. Getting tough for me who craves only carbohydrates and drinks mainly coffee. I think I'm going to allow myself one day to not eat or drink. That way if I don't get my fruit, veggies or water one day, I won't feel so miserable.

Good luck everyone!

P.S. I hope you're feeling better, Beth.

I'm starting this challenge over, as the past week has been a total flop for me in terms of my daily stretching challenge. What I WANT to do is 10 minutes of stretching daily, and 10 minutes of stair stepping at least 5 days this week. God willin' and the creek don't rise.

I missed work on Tuesday, not sure if it was fibro plus exhaustion, or an intestinal bug that's going around, but I'm still not 100%. The past week I'd fall into bed at night, think 'Oh, right, stretching... zzzzzzzzz'. Maybe this week will work out better for these goals. Hope so.

On to Week 2!

I did "ok" on my Week 1 challenge goal, but missed a day emoticon . I did however, fit in some physical activity every day emoticon (mainly strength training emoticon and SHOVELING SNOW emoticon emoticon ), so I don't feel too bad about not actually doing my stretching or yoga.

This week I have decided to add "drinking at least 3 glasses of water" a day emoticon emoticon emoticon . I drink fluids (coffee, tea, juice, and even diet pop) but I want to focus more on my water intake. I used to drink at least 6 glasses a day, and I would like to start doing that again.

This monthly challenge is a good motivator for me. It makes me pay more attention to those habits that I want to make a part of my lifestyle.

Darn! I forgot to eat my fruit yesterday - on the last day of the week. I'm going to try to do better this week, along with drinking four glasses of water daily.

Yesterday I did stretch during the day, sort of 'survival stretches'. Work was problematic, as I was in a cold room (again!) and this work site is always tension filled. I got through it, actually ended up barely eating enough calories (yes, there was THAT much tension at the job site. yuck. Glad I'm only there occasionally.), and did my 10 minutes of yoga and stretching mentally, I guess, after I fell asleep. As I got into bed I thought, 'oh, right, stretching... yawn....) emoticon Oh, well, sleep won out.

Today I WILL stretch!

Thinking of a new personal challenge to add to this one. Yesterday I realized, Hey! We have stairs! Built in stair steppers! I can build stair stepping into each day. hmmmm.

Happy Saturday, everyone.

I'm doing real well with my fruit. I had an apple Wednesday and fresh strawberries yesterday. I think I'm going to have some cantaloupe today. I was going to do that a few days ago, but never got to it.

As for next week (which starts Sunday), I'm going to continue with my serving of fruit a day and add 4 glasses of water a day, too. emoticon

No problem Beth :) So glad it helped a bit! I think Bayoublue may have a great idea by splitting the 10 minutes up throughout the day...I am going to try this too, because the whole stretching for at least 10 minutes at 6 am is just not happening for me.

Mina_AH13, you have a great idea by getting the perfect spot ready...I am going to try to find a good spot I feel really comfortable in this week. Thanks for the awesome idea! Good luck to everyone on completing you February goal emoticon

My 10 minutes of stretching/yoga/tai chi is fitting into my daily routine quite nicely. I don't always do the 10 minutes at one time -- sometimes I do several shorter sessions of 2 or 3 or 5 minutes throughout the day. It feels so good to stretch or do some yoga poses -- relaxes my body and my mind.

Nintendoaddict, thank you! I think I found the right place to track my stretch times, added it into "My Exercises'. But it wants me to do this 10 minutes twice a day, and I only wanted to log it for once a day. Twice comes later, after I get the once a day established! (Sometimes I despair of my poor tired brain ever really getting this computer stuff... emoticon

This week my goal is to rearrange my bedroom so that I have enough room to carve out a "Maya corner" where I can just kind of go to decompress/have room for yoga/etc (I already bought a cool partition so that I can section of a "calm corner". We live in a very small apartment and most of it is full of this controlled chaos since we have more stuff than room, and I have given the living room over to the hubby and the cats. So, anyway my goal for this week is to make a place for myself so that I can eliminate my "I don't have the space/I get distracted" excuses and begin a regular yoga/stretching routine.

My goal is to do yoga three mornings a week. The night time yoga is about all I can usually do, but it really helps me to wake up early and do this before work....when I actually get my butt out of bed!

PurpleDragon, I found "Stretching/Yoga (general)" as a regular fitness search under the "My Fitness" tab....hope that helps. Good luck with each of your goals!

Thank you for this challenge. I'm hoping to make my daily stretching into a daily habit. I've been smacked by the realization that 'use it or lose it' is a reality now that I'm no longer as young as I think I am. Ten minutes before bed is not as difficult as I thought it would be, although my dog thinks I'm on the floor to play with her! She's a smart dog, does her morning downward and upward dog stretches every day.

How can I track stretching minutes? Is there a way to do that? I don't see a link for it, or to create my own fitness tracking topic on the My Trackers page. It would be motivating for me to be able to see progress.

I did my 10 minutes of stretching last night before bed, and realized just how stiff my muscles have gotten. I intend to continue this practice and expand on it as I can. Slowly, slowly...

I.M.MAGIC, I've had several hand surgeries, so I truly understand your frustrations. Do ask for help. It's hard, but so is buttoning buttons and tying shoes one handed, not to mention opening jars and bottles. I hope you are nicely healed in 4 weeks.

My goal this week is to walk at least 10 mins a day. I do at least 12 glasses of water daily so that isn't a problem here. But the walking is difficult. So here goes..........

Slow & steady makes a winner of us. Even if we hit pitfalls, get up. Know that a new day is right around the corner.
Try to be all that you can be. Work at it a day at a time.

I like BAYOUBLUE 's idea. I will set a goal for myself of at least 10 minutes daily of stretching or yoga. Concentrated time, tv off, not on the phone, no distractions. Starting Feb. 2. I need to be doing this and keep putting it off. Now is a good time for a challenge.

Count me in!

My goal for Week 1 is:
Do at least 10 minutes of stretching, yoga, or tai chi daily. emoticon

I am going to start this challenge today -- and hopefully be able to turn it into a part of my daily routine.

Each week I will attempt a "new" challenge, which I will try to continue throughout the month. Modifying my lifestyle "one change/one week" at a time seems like a very attainable (and very beneficial) goal.

We have a topic here that says "What is your goal for today?" Well, for February, I'd like to challenge you to make a goal for a week: drink 6 glasses of water each day; walk for 10 minutes five days this week, eat 2 veggies a day for a week, etc.

Once you've written your weekly goal here, come back at the end of the week and let us know how you did.

My weekly goal beginning Sunday is to eat one serving of fruit each day of the week.

Anyone want to join me in this February Challenge?
