I like to pan-fry sliced tempeh with a bit of maple syrup, dash of soy sauce and a teenie dash of liquid smoke. Wonderful! Sweet, savoury... smoky! Great with breakfast foods, or cut up in wraps or chopped into your favourite salad.

Wow! Thanks for all the ideas guys! I am happy to hear the tip to steam or boil the tempeh first - I certainly don't want bitter!

I'm excited to really explore these recipes :-)

I love tempeh! I lived in Indonesia for just over a year when I was much younger, and tempeh was one of my favorite foods. I was delighted when it became available in the US. Since tempeh can often taste bitter, I steam it before I use it. Just put it in a steamer and let it steam for 10 - 15 minutes. Let cool to room temp before proceeding with your recipe. boil a little to get rid of the bitter taste and soften a little, shred and add your favorite barbeque sauce...... Make a barbeque sandwich. I like to add vegan no added fat coleslaw on top.

the deli dressing is a tofu mayo that comes from Vegan Deli cookbook, but any vegan mayo/veganaise would work.

and crumbling the tempeh to use it as the "meat" in spaghetti sauce - i usually make the marinara sauce from veganomicon and add the tempeh "meat".

Confession time - I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, and vegan for nearly 2...... and I've NEVER tried tempeh. Something about it intimidates me.

But I was browsing veganhealth.org and came across a discussion of the amino acid lysine (called - "the limiting protein for vegans" - on the website) and saw that tempeh had the highest listing for this amino acid of all the foods listed.

So.... I figure it is time to roll it out. I bought a big sausage roll configuration ("natural" flavor) of it from the local health food store, as well as some tempeh "bacon" which I assume is flavored.

Now, I have no idea what to do with it! lol.

I've been reading some recipes, but I was wondering if you guys would mind sharing your go-to tempeh recipe with me. I'm looking for things that are easy, and not too intimidating for my first go-around.
