Oh dear!! I use nothing more sophisticated than freshly boiled water sloshed around in the bottle to sterilise my grolsh type Ikea bottles- I clean the residue out first with hot tap water, before pouring in about 100ml of boiled water, close the lid, shake vigorously for a min, then pour it out and reseal the bottle- the resulting partial vacuum as the air inside cools seals the bottle further- I have never had a problem with this method!

I just bought some Grolsch-type bottles at vast expense as we don't have an Ikea nearby and bore them home. As they had metal in the tops I couldn't sterilise them in the microwave which is what I do with jam jars so I put them in the oven carefully removing the rubber seals.. Half an hour later disaster; the tops had totally melted. They were plastic not ceramic. I should have noticed of course but never thought of it. Anyway I ordered some ceramic-topped bottles from Home Brew Online, an excellent site. I got their elderflower champagne "package" which all sorts of things like funnels and airlocks as well as 12 brown bottles with "proper" tops which were good value. They delivered in 2 days and worth looking into if, like me, you are nowhere near an Ikea.
