The cooler is a great idea!
We discovered a few years back that, when we are travelling, it is quite easy to keep a small cooler with mayo and margarine, or mustard, with some picnic knives and spoons, and go to a grocery store and purchase some lean deli meats and healthy buns, and some fresh fruit or baby carrots, with individual tubs of yoghurt, for a healthy, inexpensive lunch instead of going through drive throughs. Sure saved some upset stomachs on the road!
The smallest good deed is better than the grandest intention.
