I'm glad the addition of a new life helps to ease the pain of the losses a bit, Cherly.

You're right, Sam. Like an emotional roller coaster sometimes.

June is a month like that for us because in 07 Greg's dad died then came the miscarriage but then this year having Sarah so her birthday will be right in the middle. Makes it easier to bear for the rest of the family at least with her birthday being there.

How sad.

Stories like that always remind me of the M*A*S*H* episode where the docs are working on a patient on Christmas Day. They work hard to keep the patient going until after midnight so that the soldier's children to not have to think of Christmas as the day their father died. He doesn't make it, but they falsify the death certificate to make it say the day after. I love that episode.

It does make us grateful, doesn't it? Someone in our area lost her son on Mother's day last year. I can;t imagine what that day will be like for her in the future... That is all I could think of when I heard it.

That's sad, Sam. So painful to remember sometimes, isn't it? My dh and my anniversary is like that for us, his grandfather died exactly a month after our wedding. The number 26 is bittersweet for us.

What fun! I do miss taking my son out trick or treating. My brother would come from St Louis to go out with Joe.

We had a good time last night. The food and company was good. The view was nice. It overlooked the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati. We were there at sunset and then the full moon came out. WOW!!!!

The sadder part of evening is today is the anniversary of my best friend's husband's death. That is why were were out to dinner. It is very hard for her to be at home at this time - too many painful memories associated with Halloween for her.

Hope everyone else had a safe and happy Halloween.

I hope your dinner was great!

My in laws came over before they went out to dinner and they were all dressed up - my FIL in a big Cat in the Hat costume and my MIL in a clown suit. I took my younger dd out with the neighhbour little girl and her mother and younger sister. The younger one pooped out early, and I took the other girls a bit further. My ds is all dressed up and has done an elaborate job on the front yard complete with caution/police tape and a chalk-outline and graves! What a hoot!

How are you all celebrating Halloween? We're going out to dinner with friends. We live in a subdivision that has houses far apart from one another, so we don't get trick or Treaters. I miss seeing them.

Glad it went well, Sam, and that you had a nice time. That's too bad that they needed to take more but it's good that they think they got everything!

Cherly - it is hard to decide what to do as a parent sometimes. I am torn with the vaccinations. My children have some of their shots, but not all that are available (I have concerns with some of them as they are so new), and we have never had a seasonal flu shot and I wonder if we should get this one or not.

We had a nice time. My son and his girlfriend went with my hubby and I. They went down to the Arch, while I went to my mom's and did a little cleaning for her. (My sister in law usually does it, but she is recovering from her surgery.)

Thank you so much for the prayers for her. They took more than they originally thought when they went in for the hysterectomy, but they are confident that they got everything!

It was good to see her, my mom and brother.

Love, Sam

I know that our school is going to give the shots at school soon. I am still unsure of the H1N1 though. I know alot of the pediatricians are out of the shots around here. I have been fortunate that the other two kids have not caught anything yet. I know some of the classes where the kids go have had over half of their classes out but they have not shut down any days. I had parent teacher conferences on Thursday and the kids where out Friday but head back on Monday. They don't get a fall break till Thanksgiving. Have a safe trip Sam.

I sure hope the break enables the kids to get better soon!

I haven't checked out our H1N1 info for a long time. I should visit our public health site and see what the latest is. The papers are all saying that the vaccines are now in Winnipeg, so I guess the line-ups will start soon!

Enjoy the trip, Sam!

I talked to our school nurse about flu shot. She told me that s long as you don't get the nasal flu vaccine, but t the shots - you can get both the seasonal and H1N1 shots.

Our Intermediate school will be closed Monday - Wednesday next week. (We are currently on fall break.) They had 30% of the students out ill.

I had parent-teacher conferences last night and this morning. I am now on fall break. We are headed to St Louis tomorrow. My son and his girlfriend are going with us. I haven't seen my mom since Easter. The drive should be beautiful with all the fall foliage.

Hi Jenn! Welcome to the chat thread!
I've had an extremely hectic week with meetings for both myself and my dh, cross-country meets, volleyball practises for three different teams (as each child is on a different one!), and volleyball games! This week we've had three or four things on a night! It's been crazy trying to get everyone to where they need to go.

I haven't exercised all week yet, and I sure feel the difference when I don't. Wish me luck in getting in some later on this week and into the weekend!

Cherly - yes, I can imagine it is very stressful trying to ensure everyone is healthy in your family. Once you have a particular virus, you cannot get it again. However, there are millions of types of viruses and flus. He could have had one kind, and then get another later.

The seasonal one fights a few, I think, doesn't it? The ones the researchers believe will be the most prevalent that year? Sometimes they're wrong though!

I didn't get my flu shot yet. I usually do, but am not sure this year.
How has everyone been? This has been a good week for me so far. I met a fitness goal and I orginized things that need to be done.
Take care all.

I haven't gotten it yet either. I usually wait till November because it only last for around 4 months so that will see me through till February if I get it then. My question is once Christopher has the flu could he get it again or not. They also are now saying that in older people the H1N1 is not affecting as bad just the kids and I don't know if that is what Christopher had or not. There has been talk around her that kids that have taken the tamiflu the it usually stopped the fever in 3 days but some are ending up getting it back again and then it's running for 5 days like Christopher's did so I hope maybe he won't get it again. Very stressful and nerve racking that's for sure trying to make sure they stay well.

I didn't get a seasonal flu shot yet. If I get one (which I doubt as I have no older people or babies near me, or health problems to warrant it) I'll get it after the H1N1 one, just in case the one interferes with the other as they're suggesting it might.

There were a LOT of seniors getting the seasonal flu shot at our school last week, though. But they're certainly at high risk for seasonal and not for H1N1, so I think that was a good choice for them.

Very hard that's for sure. Since I know now that Christopher has the flu I just pray the other two don't get it. I know that in their school alot of kids have been out as well. One teacher had over half her class out with illness. It's going to be a rough season.

No he was not started on a antibotic. I took him back today because of spiking another fever so they rechecked him for the flu and it came back positive this time and it's to late to take the tamiflu for it. They say it normally runs around 7 days and he has been battling this for at least 5 day now. I just pray the rest of us don't get the bug now.

Are they giving them antibiotics for something other than the flu? I probably missed something earlier. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections.

My BP is up and I am feeling it. Or else as my friend says I'm feeling whatever is causing it to be up. Luckily I am headed to the doctor for my BP checkup.

He run around 101 last night and I just keep giving him Tylenol to help him feel better or he whines so badly. I hope we are getting better but the doctors office told me to go ahead and bring Sarah home because she has already probably been exposed to it and if she is going to get it she will anyway. The only good thing about it is she run and antibotic a few weeks back so I hope maybe that will help her about not getting it. Mikayla's UTI culture came back positive as well so she is having to continue the antibotics also so maybe that will help her out as well too.

I'm surprised they aren't giving anything for the fever either. Since the flu is probably viral, there isn't a whole lot they can do except treat symptoms. I am so glad that you know that the baby is close by. I hope your son's fever didn't go back up during the day.

Oh, that's so good that your mother lives so close! Very handy! Do the doc wish you to give him Tylenol or whatever to bring down the fever? Or do they want the fever to kill the germs?

And Sam, that is great that the dancing had such a wonderful 'side effect' to bring your husband out of his shell a bit.

Glad you hubby will do things like that with you. Mine wouldn't for love or money and yes he is also the quiet type.

CJ, Sarah is staying with my mom who lives up the hill from my house. The doctor thought it would be best if she was out of the house for a few days so I left her there to try to keep her from getting anything. He ran a fever of 102 yesterday but this morning I think he might be normal. I haven't woke him up yet to check the temp. It's hard to believe him running such a fever and them not giving him any type of medicine. I have been very concerned but I guess they know best.

Thank you. It's fun having more than one dance partner...

We went out with a group from the studio. At one point I leaned over to my son and said, "5 years ago would you have thought that your dad would be out dancing and with someone other than me?" He laughed and agreed... This has been so good for my husband who tends not to be overly social. It's beyond his comfort level. This has helped him be more comfortable in social situations beyond our dance group. Not an outcome I expected, but am so happy about.

He did the nose swab and that's what came back negative in the office. They didn't put him on any meds and I am just having to watch him right now. Last night his fever reached 103.6 and I called because I was unsure of where it needed to be. They said for it to not go over 105 and I thought that was way high. I am very nervous for sure and just pray all turns out well. This morning his fever is back up to 102.4 so another day of dragging for him. Mikayla is battling a UTI and has been up and down all night long but I hate for her not to go to school because she battles so hard with it.

I am so sorry to hear that your son is ill with the flu. My friend's sister was diagnosed with H1N1. The rapid test was negative, but the longer test came back positive. My friend is a nurse and she said that a positive result is accurate, but a negative is not. So you are wise to be taking precautions with the baby... I hope everyone is better soon!

Tim and I did well this weekend with our dance. We finished our Bronze 1 levels. Of course our son also passed the same level in only 5 months. He has really done amazingly well.

My morning has been full and speaking of flu Christopher has the flu like symptoms but negative when the did the test. He has no energy and running a fever of 101 so doctor says plenty of soup and rest for him. He will be out till Thursday at least but Mikayla gets to go back tomorrow because she only has a UTI once again. The hardest part is Sarah can't stay at home for the next couple of days till Bub gets better so I might go nuts from not having my baby with me. Oh me!

And now the recommendations for healthcare workers is to not get the seasonal flu shot until after they get the H1N1 flu shot later on. Something about it may interfere with the immunities produced by the body .

That is very scary but sometimes I wonder if the shot will help either or hurt. Last year when I got my flu shot I actually got the flu while pregnant so I am up in the air about it.

Me, too. Keep us posted with what the expert says. It's so great sometimes, just to even know what is wrong and how to help.

Sam - that's rough. I hope she gets better soon.

I am so glad that you found someone that can help you and Mikayla....

Thanks you for your prayers for my sister-in-law. My sister-in-law on my husband's side has H1N1, but she seems to be doing ok.

I also pray all goes well. I took MIkayla yesterday to a lady who can assess her to see if she needs to be checked out for dyslexia and will hear back from her in a couple of days. She told me she could see things wrong so maybe I can get my answers I need and get the school to help.

I'm glad the surgery went well, but that's a shame that it had to be more extensive. Still, if they got everything, that's a good thing.

I hope she recovers well!

IEPs stay with students, but are revised every year. Students can be released. I could understand why students would struggle more as they go through the grades, because they have to read more and the material gets harder.

I can't help much, because I haven't worked with students with this learning difficulty.

My sister in law did well with the surgery. They took more than they originally thought - radical hystectomy - but they think they got everything. They'll know more in a week or so.

Hmm...good questions. I'm afraid I don't know. I know at our school, if a child has an EA, they stay with them sometimes all the way to graduation. But with others, they don't get special help after grade 8. Sam may have more answers than I.

Sam - will definitely say a prayer for her. That's rough. Too much cancer. So sad.

They have her in the Barton program which is another program for dyslexics but what happens when she gets into middle school. Other parents say their kids struggle alot worse once they get higher up and will the program stick with her as she gets older?

I have a reputation for being a hard teacher... I have expectations for my students and their parents. At least my student teacher had heard the same said of me, but after working with me says she doesn't agree.

I don't give false pats on the back. I do give them for someone who has been working hard. I feel children are smart enough to know when they deserve a pat on the back and know when you are sincere.

I am sorry that you are having such trouble. Our local Masons support a learning center for people with dyslexia. You might want to see if that would help. They use the Orton/Gillingham method.

Say a prayer for my sister in law. She is having a hysterectomy tomorrow; she has cervical cancer. We are hoping that it hasn't progressed very far and that her lymph nodes are clean.

TGIF,

And yet if we don't push, sometimes they don't realize their full potential. I was talking about that to some of my students just the other day. they were commenting that their old schools were easier and didn't expect as much. I reminded them that reaching for high expectations, you end up doing very very well, even if you don't quite meet the expectations. Reaching for really low expectations, or meeting low ones, doesn't mean a great deal!

It's like the quote I've seen here on SP - Reach for the moon, if you don't make it, at least you'll be among the stars.

I have battled with school since she was in kindergarten when I thought that is what she might have. They claim they cannot really know if she has it till she is in 2nd or 3rd so I waited and last year started pushing it again and still getting no where. I am trying to get her some answers because she knows now she read like others do and it frustrates her. Also her brother is one of those who doesn't have to study alot because he just remembers and she has to study hard or she won't get it. I feel so sorry for her and yes I push her hard to get her through which makes me look like the villian but I also know it would crush her if she failed a grade too. Some days you just don't know what to do.

That's too bad. I'm glad that you can get her tested for dyslexia, though.

Have you done any research on line about it? My friend is trying to help her son as he has discalculia (trouble with maths and numbers jumping around the page, he also has troubling reading).

Our insurance does not cover for speech. I go Saturday to a lady from another school who is willing to help me see if she needs to be tested for dyalexia. I can't even get her school to do that for me and yes it's frustrating.

Sam - I am so glad for you that the arch supports seemed to help your knee! That's good to hear.

Cherly - I'm pleased for you that the teacher seems to be working out so well for your daughter this year. It's a shame that she gets less support because you are working with her and pushing her! That is the one thing as an educational assistant that I found extremely frustrating is that the special needs children that I have worked with seem to never have any support or help at home. I suppose that is why I had to help them...

My daughter has trouble with some speech sounds and the school speech and language pathologist could not fit her in the schedule so I hired a private one and we got permission to get her pulled out of school once every two weeks for practise with her.

Our insurance covered a pathologist, though, I don't know how much it would be for you guys and if you'd be allowed to hire out like that.

I am very partial to 4th graders, since that is the grade I teach!

We don't test for dyslexia, since it is a medical condition - same for ADD and ADHD. Each state is different, so I don't know what they do where you are. We have the same problem at times. If the teacher and parents are working very hard then there is no testing done. That is the new RTI (Right to Intervention) model. They are trying to reduce special ed numbers.

This was my first day on my feet all day with the arch supports. It did see to help my knee. Not as much discomfort when walking long distances. It is 1/4 mile from my car to my classroom. So I am feeling very hopeful that this will be better than ever.

There was a new teacher that come this year to Brookland and I asked for Mikayla to get her because I had heard good things about her and so far we are doing pretty good. She is really helping me get Mikayla through the year and she is very positive help too. It has been rough on her reading and still trying to work with the school on getting her tested for dyslexia. Because I am pushing her so hard and help her make good grades the school won't hardly help out with the reading difficulties because I do push her so hard to help keep her grades up. She is starting for 4th year of speech and she is also very upset because she is ready to be done with it. She didn't improve any last year because they didn't pull her like they should to help her out any. Maybe this year I can push them to get her tested to where she doesn't feel out of place. Christopher is having the time of his life in 4th grade and loves his teachers. Middle school was the best thing that could have happened for him.

I have had knee surgery on mine but it only made it worse but that was over 22 yrs ago. It had never worked right but I just put up with it. Yes she loves to talk to her toys and already kicking her feet up and rolling on her side too. I enjoy every minute we have together and she is just a joy. Looking forward to the holidays with her.

I met with the physical therapist for the first time on Thursday for him to evaluate my knee. He says that the first thing is to get the swelling down. Plus he sent me to someone to get arch supports. He said to start with pre-made, then if that didn't work, I could look into custom.

My feet don't hurt, except when I do yoga they cramp up. The therapist said that the lack of an arch puts strain on my knee. I really wasn't surprised. My dad had terrible feet and had to wear arch supports for a long as I can remember.

Yes, I am really enjoying tie with my son.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Talking? Oh my goodness, that's so exciting.

Sam - good to see you! Sorry to hear about your knee. That's nice that your son is seeing a girl from the dance group and they are spending time with you.

With your fallen arches, have they given you any exercises or stretches? I had a similar issue a few years back and I got custom-fit orthotics and did my exercises religiously and they really helped me to stretch the sore spots. I hope things improve for you!

Hello all. I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, just off the monthly chat.

The beginning of the school year is always busy for me. My son is dating a girl from our dance group and they hang out here a lot, so I've been cooking more too. This is not a complaint!!! I like it.

I hurt my knee while dancing with my son 2 weeks ago, but it's getting better. Found out that I have fallen arches which is causing some of my knee problems.

So that is my update. I have been thinking of you all. I just wanted to stop in to say HI. Plus I love seeing the baby profile pictures.

Just a week away from Thanksgiving for me! (harvest is earlier here, so we celebrate the holiday sooner). But, yeah, I cannot believe it is October already. I think my disbelief has partly to do with us getting balmy weather well into September it was very warm, just a week ago here. Like, July warm. It was weird as our July was sucky. Can't win around here! Of course, we're not flooding like in the Philippines, so I'd better stop complaining.
