It is also the mindset :-)
I have switched to herbal organic tea. Lemon water doesn't cut the pleasure seeker in me. I enjoy the lemon water zing, it gets me going.
At 3:00AM when he gets up we share a warm beverage and I get to sent him off with that warm loving feeling through out the day. I drink the lemon water at 7:00AM and start my zing in my day. The liver gets the benefits with the 3 hrs in between. My mental mindset puts water and lemon with activity and health of body.
My mindset of warm beverages is a mental health thing and to me that is just as important.
There is a balance and when I find that, all areas are covered :-)

"I am not sure I would go for a grain type as I have real issues with grains. I will just get over it. BOOHOO :( LOL"

Well, just like you said, Erin: the true ritual is the time you get to spend with your DH. So knowing that, you can drink any drink you want and still have that time with him. The hard part is the breaking of old habits or traditions...and we all have trouble with that, so we understand.

Interesting.
I miss my morning coffee A LOT. I did experience head aches when I stopped. I usually only had one mug, but very strong freshly ground beans everyday. I miss the smell, the taste and the morning ritually my DH and I shared having our morning coffee.
I believe the delight was with him and not the coffee. But I did like it and do miss it.

IM, your "uncoffee" sounds interesting! I'll have to save that recipe and try it sometime.

IM, I'm a real coffee person, too. I was never addicted to it, either, because I usually only want one cup for breakfast and find myself usually wishing I could have a warm cup of joe at night (but of course couldn't drink it then or I'd be up all night!)

But I finally found something I actually like BETTER than coffee and I can drink it at night---no caffiene, no problems! It's sold at Whole Foods and is called "Cafix". It's an instant coffee made from grains. There's another version of it called "Pero" sold there--exact same ingredients, but I didn't like it as much. (Pero isn't "roasted" grains and it takes twice as much to taste right.)

Cafix isn't strong coffee, more of a mild flavor, but getting to drink it at night has been great!

I did try a tea coffee from Celestial Seasonings called "Roastaroma", but for some reason I liked this coffee drink at first, then grew to hate it! LOL! But I never have tired of Cafix.

I also just recently discovered rooibus tea. At first I didn't like it (it smelled like cough syrup to me!), but found that if I let it brew strong, then it has a coffee-like essense to it. I still prefer Cafix, though. (Hey, I could do a commercial for that brand, couldn't I! LOL!!! Just call me "the Cafix Guy"! Hehe!)

As some of you may know, I decided to do the whole month of January without coffee. I wanted to 1.) see if I could do it 2.) make a decision as to what place, if any, coffee has in my life, and 3.) look for something to replace my coffee ritual...a big part of my coffee habit.

Well, I did it! emoticon and learned some things. I am not addicted to coffee; I was only drinking one triple espresso in the morning. I had no headaches or other withdrawal symptoms when I began. I just love the morning ritual involving the preparation and quiet time while drinking my brew. And the good news is that I have found a couple of replacements that seem to do the trick for me. One is rooibos tea with almond milk and a touch of agave, honey or maple syrup. The other is a recipe from my friend and mentor Mattie's restaurant. Here it is:

Mattie's Un-Coffee

1 medium sweet potato
1/2 cup raw nuts
3 T agave
1/2 t salt
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t nutmeg
1 t vanilla
1/2 lime, juice only (I use less)
1/4 cup cacao (I use carob sometimes)
4 cups water

Makes about 6 cups.

Place all ingredients in Vitamix and blend until container is warm to touch. Serve warm or at room temperature. I store it in a glass jar in the frig and then warm a bit on the stove each morning. This morning I substituted an orange for the lime juice. This recipe lends itself to tinkering. I added about a half a raw parsnip to my last batch.

There is still a place in my life for coffee. I may have it on the weekends or occasionally during the week. I love the smell and taste of it and have no health issues that would keep me from have a cup, but I now have other options that I can use on a more regular basis.
