emoticon emoticon Challenge for Sunday, March 11th:

~~Draw up a contract committing to your goal.~~

Want to get motivated to achieve a goal but don't know how? Draw up a contract with yourself. Write the terms of the contract as well as the reason for why you hope to meet this goal. For example, if you want to start taking more walks, first plot out a schedule and then think about the benefits. Write "I promise to walk on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Walking three times a week will help me manage my weight, keep fit, and deal better with stress." Sign and date the contract, and place it somewhere you'll see it every day.

Signing a formal contract with yourself appeals to your sense of duty and obligation, making it less likely you'll skip out on the essential steps needed for success. A personal contract also puts procrastination on hold because it specifies when you'll fit your commitments into an already busy schedule.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Saturday, March 10th:

~~Assess 1 of your goals to see if it's reasonable or if it might benefit from being scaled back.~~
]
Take a close look at a big goal you've had for a long time and have not made much progress on. What is it about this goal that has kept it at a standstill? Think about whether or not the goal fits into your life in a practical way. Is it possible that it's just too large for right now and could benefit from some pruning to make it more manageable?

Our goals have to be realistic and able to be integrated into our current lives. When we don't make any progress on a goal, it leaves us feeling guilty or inadequate, when perhaps the problem is the goal itself and not us. It's possible that your goal is too large, or that you made the goal at a time in your life when you didn't have as many other demands. By taking time to really assess a longtime but slow-moving goal, you may decide to modify your goal so it's more manageable.

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Friday, March 9th:

~~Write 3 sentences about what success means to you.~~

Take a few minutes to write down what success means to you personally. Your vision doesn't have to be based on anything in your current life or how success is often traditionally defined.

Success means very different things to different people. But what's really important is what it means to you! Taking a few minutes to define what success means to you personally helps you begin to create the life you want, rather than worry about pleasing everyone else. Seeing the sentences on paper (rather than saying it aloud or just thinking about it) can also help you cement your dreams and biggest wishes.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Thursday, March 8th:

~~Pledge to track your progress on 1 goal by writing down everything you do to reach it.~~

Pick one of your goals, large or small. Write it down in a journal, in a document you save to your computer, or in your phone. Every time you do something that relates to achieving that goal, pledge to make a note of it. The point is to track and recognize every step you take toward meeting your goal.

Tracking even small progress towards your goals shows that you are getting somewhere. If we wait for only the big accomplishments, we don't enjoy the process and can't celebrate the little steps along the way. But by tracking any and all progress, we see that we're well on our way to the finish line - or at least that we've moved beyond the starting line!

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Wednesday, March 7th:

~~Take 5 minutes to read how a famous person you admire reached his or her goals.~~

Think of someone in the public eye - living or dead - whom you really admire. It can be an actor, a politician, a musician, a scientist, an architect, a chef ... no career is off-limits. Do a search using the name of that person and the words "early career."

Sometimes we may think of someone in the public eye as an overnight sensation, but the truth is that people very rarely achieve their dreams that quickly. There are often years of hard work and dogged determination behind all that fame and success. By seeing how someone you admire did it, it may help you embrace the value of small, manageable steps - and a big dose of patience - as you try to reach a goal.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Tuesday, March 6th:

~~Choose a small object that represents a life dream or goal, and keep it in a handy spot.~~

Select an object that is small enough to keep in your pocket or bag or be tucked into a drawer you use at work or at home. The object should represent one of your biggest goals. Perhaps you dream of directing a movie one day; your object could be a movie ticket. If you've always longed to visit London's Kew Gardens, a dried flower would work. If it's tough to correlate your dream to an object at hand, you can print out or draw a picture and use that in its place.

Out of sight, out of mind. In other words, it's easy to talk a big game about a goal and then forget about it. But when you have a daily visual reminder of what you want to do, you may be more motivated to live the reality of that goal or dream.

You know the saying, Diana...."Slow and steady wins the race"!!

~~Break one large goal into 10 steps, and write them down.~~

Pick one goal and break it down into at least 10 steps - the smaller the steps, the better! For example, perhaps you've been talking about taking a yoga class. The steps might be: 1) go online to read about different forms of yoga; 2) choose one type of yoga to try; 3) locate somewhere that offers a class; 4) find out when the next session begins; 5) pick a date to observe a class; 6) save money to enroll; 7) enroll; 8) schedule the class on your personal calendar; 9) figure out what to wear to class; and 10) attend first class!

If you set out without a plan, it's very easy to get lost between making a goal and actually achieving it. You're more likely to accomplish a goal when you approach it as a combination of several smaller steps, because breaking it into pieces makes the process manageable. In addition, reaching the goal becomes more enjoyable because you can celebrate your small successes along the way!

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Sorry about not posting a challenge yesterday. I had a fight with the flu....I'm winning!

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Sunday, March 4th:

~~Pledge to focus on your own achievements the next time you compare yourself to others.~~

The next time you begin to feel envious of another person's achievements, stop and put the focus back on you. Compare yourself to yourself instead, and think about the goals you've achieved and the progress you have made in life.

It's natural to compare ourselves to others, but this may lead to feelings of envy or jealousy about our friends' or co-workers' achievements. When you take a moment to step back put the focus on yourself instead, you'll find that you've got your own achievements to get excited about! This helps create feelings of gratitude, acceptance, and pride in your own life that can lead to more positive experiences.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Friday, March 2nd:

~~Take 5 minutes to think about a famous quote and how it applies to your goals.~~

You may have heard this quote before, attributed to Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." Take a few moments to think about what it means and how you can apply it to a potential goal of yours. Are you avoiding setting a goal because you are afraid you might fail?

Our thoughts are very powerful in influencing what happens in our lives. If we continually dwell on the negative, we can impose a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, thinking positively and trusting that you can make the changes you want to see happen can also become a self-fulfilling prophesy! If you think positively, you will be more likely achieve your goals.

Great going, Diana!!

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Thursday, March 1st:

~~Define how you will measure success for 1 of your goals.~~

Identify success using numbers for at least one of your goals. Think in terms of things that can be measured, such as time, quantity, or distance. For example, if your goal is to increase the amount of exercise you do each week, specify the amount of time you will exercise. If you want to find a job closer to home, check out a map and decide the maximum number of miles or kilometers you will travel. If you've been trying to motivate yourself to clean and organize a bookshelf, pick a number of books you will dust when you attack the project.

If we don't have a very clear concept of what success looks like, it's much more challenging to get there. With numbers in mind, it's easier to identify when we're getting off track and to readjust our focus so that we can meet our goals. Specific measurements also allow you to determine if you reached your goal - and feel accomplished when you do!

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

So are you, Marcie! ((hugs))

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Wednesday, February 29th:
~~Give yourself permission to explore a new goal.~~

Take a few moments to think about a current goal you're seeking. It doesn't have to be a big one; it can be medium-sized or even small. Does it make you feel inspired or not? If one (or more) of your goals leaves you feeling less than excited, allow yourself the space and flexibility to try something new in its place.

When we make goals for ourselves, it's easy to seek success in the areas in which we're most comfortable. While this familiar territory can help us avoid failure, it can also prevent our goals from helping us learn and grow. By taking on a different sort of goal and facing fears of the unknown, you create the potential to uncover a new inspiration that could enrich your life.

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Tuesday, February 28th:

~~Pledge to keep an open mind when it comes to your age and setting a goal.~~

The next time you hear your inner voice saying, "I'm too old" or "I'm too young," when you set a goal, stop yourself. Consider if that's really true - is there really an age limit or requirement? Probably not, unless you're trying to ride a roller coaster at an amusement park. Instead of ignoring a dream goal, keep your mind open.

It's easy to ignore an opportunity or to avoid a goal because we think we're too old or too young. A person who dreams of living in Paris might say, "I'm too old to learn how to speak French." Or another person might say, "I need more life experience before I write a novel." Although it may be true that learning French and writing a novel are both difficult tasks, age shouldn't stop someone from pursuing those goals. If we limit our beliefs about ourselves because of our age, we limit our potential to achieve our dreams and goals.

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Monday, February 27th:
~~Name your reward for meeting a goal, and write it down or put up a picture that represents it.~~

Choose one of your current goals (no matter how large or small) and name a reward. The reward doesn't have to be extravagant, but it does need to be something that will encourage you to cross the finish line. It can be an object - a new piece of clothing or a book you've been wanting to read - or it could be an experience, such as a trip to the movies or a visit to an old friend. Write down your reward and put it in a place where you'll see it, or make it even more visual by putting up a photo or drawing.

Rewards are a way of recognizing the time and effort it takes to reach a goal. Associating a reward with a goal can help encourage you to keep working toward that goal, even when the going gets tough.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Sunday, February 26th:

~~Rate your courage to change on a scale of 1 to 10, then do one thing to raise your rating.~~

Using a scale from one to 10, rate your courage to change. Number 1 means that you are always very fearful of change, and number 10 means that you embrace change openly and are always willing to change. Think of one small activity or action that, by trying it, you could build on your score. For example, if you are fearful of a new type of technology, try to learn more about how it works. If you feel nervous about a change that's coming to your job or living situation, try to envision the positives that may come out of it.

Courage means many things, including facing our own insecurities, taking some risks, and trying out new skills and behaviors. Learning something new or taking on a goal always includes making mistakes. By becoming more aware of your limits or resistance to change, it may help provide a framework as you approach setting goals or changing aspects of your life.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Saturday, February 25th:

~~Make a list of at least 5 goals that you have accomplished in the past.~~

Think of various times during your life, beginning when you were a young child and ending with the present day. As you think of the past, write down at least five goals that you accomplished. You'll likely be surprised by the long list of accomplishments from the various stages of your life.

It's easy to focus on the future - what we need to do, what we want to accomplish, and how we hope to get there. Although this adds purpose to our lives, a future-focus can also prevent us from appreciating all that we've done in the past. By taking time to acknowledge your past accomplishments, you can boost your confidence and perhaps gain some momentum to keep working towards your present-day goals.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Friday, February 24th:
~~Think of 1 person who is successful at reaching goals, and ask for advice.~~

Who is the person in your life who always seems to go for big goals - and makes reaching them look easy? Give him or her a call or send an email and ask for advice. How does he or she stay on task? What does that person do when there is a setback? How about when motivation is a problem?

There are no secrets to setting and reaching goals, but it may seem that way if we are struggling with our own while watching someone else do it with relative ease. By tapping into the knowledge of someone who successfully reaches goals, you may gain insight into the methods or tricks he or she uses to stay on task and overcome barriers. That person can even serve as motivation as you take steps to reach your goal - if he or she can do it, so can you!

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Thursday, February 23rd:

~~Write down 3 goals (and no more!) for the next 7 days.~~

Think about the week ahead, and write down the three goals you want to accomplish before the seven days are up. Be sure that they are realistic and achievable given your life, schedule, and existing responsibilities. You can post the list in a place where you'll see it often.

Many of us have long lists of the things we hope to achieve over the course of a week, only to end up feeling disappointed when we aren't able to cross everything off. Choosing three realistic goals for the week gives you the chance to clearly define exactly what you want to achieve - and you're more likely to feel satisfied when you get there! Keeping the list in a place that's handy also provides a visual reminder so that you can focus your efforts.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Wednesday, February 22nd:

~~Play the miracle game: Imagine that everything you wish for your life came true.~~

Take 5 minutes today to play a little game. Imagine that a miracle just happened, and in one instant, everything that you wish for your life came true. What does your miracle life look like? A different place to live? A new job? A relationship? And more importantly, is there one part of this new life that might be within your grasp?

Perhaps we fantasize about a new life when we buy the odd lottery ticket, but for the most part, adults are too caught up in the day-to-day grind to really let their imaginations soar. By giving yourself the freedom to envision your ideal life, you may stumble on a specific dream that you haven't thought about before. This in turn gives you the chance to think about a small step you could take to reach it.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Tuesday, February 21st:

~~Describe who you are in 3 words.~~

Think about who you are - the roles you play, the way in which you interact with others, the experiences that mean the most to you. Then pick three words that represent you. These words might describe your personality, such as compassionate, extroverted, and inventive. They might include descriptions about your roles, such as caregiver, gardener, and leader. Or they might be a combination. The words should resonate with your personality and passions. Once you've chosen three, write them down.

Having three words that describe who you are provides a quick way to confirm that your goals are aligned with your personality, interests, and passions. Sometimes we take on a goal because it's what everyone else is doing or because of outside influences. It's OK to get input from others about your goals in life - just be sure to confirm that your goals resonate with who YOU really are. When they reflect your core personality, it's more likely that you'll enjoy the process and feel empowered to meet the goal.

~~Pledge to stay a step ahead of procrastination so you can meet your goal.~~

Think of one goal you've had for a while that you routinely procrastinate about. The next time you think about the goal and then immediately have thoughts like, "I'll feel more like doing it tomorrow," "I'll do it when I'm feeling creative/energetic/etc.," or "I've got tons of time to do it," stop right where you are and become more conscious of your thoughts. Acknowledge your feelings of procrastination, take a deep breath, and do your best to get started anyway.

Every day, we have negative thoughts and emotions that we don't act on. For example, we may feel like yelling at a co-worker, but we hold back. Thoughts of procrastination are negative thoughts, too - ones that creep into your subconscious and keep you from being your best self. By pledging to stay conscious of these thoughts by giving them attention but then choosing not to act on them, you put procrastination in its rightful place.

emoticon emoticon Challenge for Sunday, February 19th:

~~Schedule 15 minutes on your calendar to get creative about your dream life.~~

Reserve 15 minutes in your schedule (this week or next) to get creative about imagining your dream life. Allow yourself a few minutes to envision your dream life. Then create a collage, draw, paint, or write about that dream life. When you're finished, find one aspect of your dream life that you might be able to incorporate into your real life.

When we think of the future, it's easy to avoid opportunities by setting limits on what we can or can't do. This exercise uses creative expression to help you break through those limits by imagining (and creating) a future in which anything is possible. After you've let go of the limits, your mind is open. Then you can more fully examine whether or not you can infuse even a small part of your dream into your life now or in the near future.

~~Size up a setback and explore how the experience may have helped you.~~

Think of a setback you've experienced and find at least one way in which this experience helped you. For example, maybe the promotion you didn't get encouraged you to look for (and land) a better job outside your organization. Perhaps you had a misunderstanding or argument with a friend or family member that gave you a better understanding of that person. Dig deep to find the silver lining that makes missing the mark worth it.

Part of reaching goals requires an ability to learn from and deal with setbacks. Although the actual experience might feel negative, if you can find at least one positive outcome from it, then you're able to show yourself and others a willingness to learn from setbacks. This resilience does wonders for a positive outlook on life.

~~Create a pace for a longtime goal by setting 5 key milestones.~~

Think of a goal that you didn't reach but want to try again. This time, commit to pacing yourself. First, identify how long it will reasonably take to reach this goal. Break that time into four or five key milestones. Write down when you expect to reach each milestone. Next, for each milestone, make a list of the things you'll need to do in order to reach it. Rather than tackling the goal all at once, use these milestones and their associated tasks to pace your progress.

When we identify a new goal we want to achieve, it's easy to let our excitement lead they way. Although this energy is helpful and can help propel you towards the finish line, if you're not careful it can also lead to burnout before you've reached your goal. Setting a reasonable pace, with manageable milestones in mind, allows you to keep your focus and make measured progress instead of losing momentum because you've spent all of your effort at the beginning.

~~Write a wish list for the next year.~~

Spend a minute making an uncensored list of everything you want in your life for the next year. On the list, include your desires for your health, money, friendships, romantic relationships, career, and hobbies. Circle the top two things you'd like to achieve. Are there steps you can take to make them a reality?

Thinking about how you'd like your year to go helps you clarify your goals, and making a list makes them that much more real. Once you've picked the two that are most meaningful to you, you can begin to identify the concrete, measurable actions you need to take. After all, every big success comes only after many mini ones.

~~Describe your success role model by writing down 5 qualities you admire about this person.~~

Write down the name of one person - you don't even have to know him or her personally - whose level of success you admire. Jot down at least five qualities that make this person successful. Is he known for getting to work early? Does she practice certain habits, such as meditation or exercise, daily? Did he take big risks when starting out in his career?

Figuring out how your success role model achieved his or her goals gets you thinking about your own success habits. Research also shows that when we see someone else achieving what we want for ourselves, we're more likely to believe we can do it, too. Listing the skills and habits that make your role model a success shows you that you don't have to be a superhero to get where you want to be.

How to do it
The most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain or discomfort that can be mild or strong, but not all heart attacks start with chest pain. Visit www.heart.org to learn the other symptoms of a heart attack.

Heart attack is a leading killer of both men and women, and getting help fast can save your life and limit damage to the heart. Recognizing the symptoms is critical, however - and they aren't always limited to chest pain and discomfort. By familiarizing yourself with these signs and symptoms, you make it more likely that you'll know when to call for help.

~~Set a reminder to stop what you're doing and focus on the way you are breathing at that moment.~~

Set a reminder on your phone or computer today to stop what you're doing and focus on how you are breathing at that moment. Take notice of whether or not you've been holding your breath, breathing shallowly, or breathing evenly. If you are holding your breath or breathing shallowly, stop and take a few deep breaths.

Whether you realize you're doing it or not, inhibitory breathing (holding your breath) is a common reaction to stress or anxiety. Because holding your breath disrupts blood chemistry, it can actually contribute to high blood pressure. And breathing shallowly means you may not be taking in the optimal amount of oxygen. Paying attention to your breathing patterns and getting in a few deep breaths when you can are great ways to reduce stress and control anxiety.

Add a lemon or lemon-scented item or object - such as lemon oil or a lemon-scented candle - to your shopping list. The next time you are seeking calm or relief from stress and fatigue, cut the lemon, pour the oil into a nearby dish, or light the candle.

Research shows that people have long been using the scent from some plants - including lemons - for mind-body health benefits. In the world of aromatherapy, lemon oil is used for its calming properties and to assist with aiding concentration and lessening feelings of stress and fatigue.

~~Do a 2-minute Reiki-inspired exercise: Close your eyes, relax, and place your hands on your face.~~

Spend one minute relaxing your face by closing your eyes and letting the muscles in your cheeks, chin, and jaw loosen. Next, place your fingertips on your hairline and your palms on your cheekbones. Hold this pose for one minute.

Reiki is a Japanese technique that focuses on using the palms of the hands to move healing energy in the body. This exercise is inspired by Reiki and modified so it can be performed by anyone. By holding your palms on your face in this way, you may be able to reduce or even remove tension in your facial muscles. As an added benefit, by focusing on one area of tension, you may also reduce stress you're holding in other parts of your body.

~~Be aware of your body and take note of your posture as you sit today.~~

When you find yourself sitting today - either in front of a computer, in the car, or at your kitchen table - take note of your body. Feel your backside in the seat as well as your legs, feet, and toes. Take note of your posture: Are you hunched over, leaning against a desk, or holding the weight of a laptop on your body? Are you arms, wrists, and hands comfortable, or do they feel tense or tight? If you feel like your body needs an adjustment, move to a position that works better, and try to stay that way rather than allowing yourself to settle back into a less healthy sitting position.

Many of us spend hours seated each day - at work, during our leisure time, or both. It's easy while seated (and often focused on a TV, computer, or phone) to forget about how our bodies really feel. By taking a moment to acknowledge the position of your body, you provide an opportunity to identify whether or not you are meeting your body's needs for comfort. You can reduce muscle stress and strain from your head to your toes, just by paying attention to what you're feeling.

Sorry that I've been MIA, team. I've had a rough few days, health-wise!

~~Plan to use yoga to relax your mind and body before you go to sleep tonight.~~

Right before bedtime, lie on your back, either on the floor or your bed. Move your arms away from the sides of your body. Place your legs about 45 degrees apart. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Allow your body to relax into the floor while being aware of your chest and stomach. Hold this pose for three to five minutes before opening your eyes.

The intent of this yoga pose is to release the mind, body, and spirit through a state of relaxation. By practicing this pose at the end of the day, you provide your mind the opportunity to relax before going to sleep.

~~Practice a 2-minute yoga pose in your chair today.~~

Sit up straight and toward the front edge of a chair. Keep your neck and spine long. Do a modified lotus pose by raising your right leg, bending it at the knee, and resting your right ankle on your left knee. Rest your hands on your knees with the palms facing up. Stay in this position for one minute, then switch legs and repeat with your left leg for one minute.

The lotus pose stimulates much of the lower body and helps to stretch the ankles and knees. It is most often used for meditation and to quiet the mind. By modifying it for chair yoga, you can easily use it as part of your daily life while still reaping the benefits for mind and body.

~~Take a walk and focus on your breathing as you do it.~~

Take a short walk today and try to focus 100% on your breathing (that means no talking, texting, or listening to music). Try to breathe from your abdomen, taking deep inhalations through your nose and releasing the air in a thin stream from your mouth as you walk. Pay more attention to your breathing than to how fast or far you're going. If at any point you find it's difficult to take a deep breath, slow down.

In practice for centuries, walking meditation is the ideal exercise to give both the body and the mind a workout. Aside from increasing blood flow and burning calories, walking has also been shown to increase the size of the brain's hippocampus, which can result in better memory. Adding a meditative quality to a walking workout can also create body awareness, which can help promote feelings of calm and centeredness.

~~Set a reminder to take 3 belly breaths today.~~

Set an alarm today - on your phone, computer, or watch - and when it sounds, take three belly-deep breaths. Not sure how to do breathe from your belly? Sit up straight, take a deep, even breath in through your nose, and focus on allowing your abdomen, rather than your chest, to move with the breath. It may help to place your hand on your abdomen so you can feel it pushing outward with your breath. Exhale slowly and evenly through your mouth, then repeat two more times.

The connection between our mind and body is a powerful one. When we take deep breaths, we allow our brain, body, and mind the opportunity to work together to help us relax. Mindful breathing can be a useful tool for addressing stress, assisting with sleep issues, and enhancing your overall mind-body connection.

~~Close your eyes, listen closely, and be mindful during 1 phone call today.~~

During one phone conversation today, make a conscious decision to be mindful of what is being said. Close your eyes so that you won't be distracted. This way, your ears will more keenly focus on listening. Don't take on other tasks; sit in one place and just concentrate on what the other person is saying.

Nowadays many of us use phone conversations as an opportunity to multitask. We might do chores, check email, eat, or even watch TV while we're talking with someone. This means we aren't truly present for the person to whom we're speaking. Fully engaging in a phone conversation by limiting all distractions can help prevent miscommunication and actually increase the efficiency and enjoyment of your phone calls.

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
