Michele, I used to make trifle a lot years ago, it's great when fresh berries are in season and it always looks so pretty in a trifle bowl. It's an old English desert with many variations. Try goggling it to see if you could find a recipe you like better. It's usually made with lady fingers but I like the angle food version. Although I don't like most ingredients in fake substitutes you could use cool whip, or just go for low fat pudding and skip the whipping cream.
