I do still clean and Spark on Sunday's but was having so much fatigue that I did not this week. I am doing much better with cleaning Keepers box. I will have help again for the things that I have not been able to do like floors, this weekend.

I haven't visited this thread in a while. Nola, is your cleaning while Sparking routine still working for you?

The matrix I created for myself last weekend, and have been playing with this week to "earn money" toward books, CDs or DVDs (basically entertainment) has been helping in a way that checking a bunch of boxes on the Other Goals page (once I got my 5 points, the rest didn't mean that much) wasn't really doing. In particular, one of the easiest ways to earn myself a quarter is to delete 15 emails in a day. I think there's only one day I didn't get this done. Many of the tasks I only get to occasionally, so it's nice to have an easy one in there--and I'm finally getting around to clearing out some of the useless junk in my email inbox at home!

Blessed Be, Amanda

I seem to have started a routine of cleaning as I Spark. Keepers box and the dishes are the main recipients of this new routine.

I was walking from my car to the building this morning, when I went to get my lanyard and badge out of its dedicated pocket in my bag--and it wasn't there. That's when I remembered I was still wearing it when I walked into the therapist's office yesterday after work, so I tossed it in the little bag I had brought with water, my journal--items for the waiting room. Oops!

I didn't beat myself up, just analyzed--and while I have a place for my work key ring and my work badge, I haven't built a routine around putting the second one away. I've gotten better at putting the work keys into their little zippered pouch--when I take the car keys out of the same one, but I am often still wearing the lanyard when I go shopping or to the library after work, or walk in the front door. So I decided I want to train myself to take off the lanyard as I'm leaving the building, or at least before I get in my car, an put it away in its proper place.

I'l report on how I'm doing with this new habit.

Blessed Be, Amanda

Sorry I guess I never noticed this thread. I decided to begin a routine of Special books for Saturday night. I have two to finish this afternoon and then tonight I am fixing a snack plate a special water glass and reading. I may rate the books but not planning to review them.

Wow, this is so much fun! In a few hours I've recaptured nine (9) Oases of Order!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon !
They aren't large--mainly small surfaces, plus a chunk of carpet and one of linoleum, but it makes me feel so successful to make visible progress. And by working a few minutes at a time, and relaxing with a computer game round in between (I'm playing my Dreams of a Geisha matching game), it's been easy to keep at it for an extended time.

I can tell I'm starting to fizzle, though, so I'm going to take a long break, make my afternoon coffee and relax with a Gilmore Girls episode. Talk to y'all later.

Sounds like a great idea, Jineane!! I don't even have a good INSIDE routine....I don't know if trying to add something outside would help or not!! emoticon

Now that spring is bring warmer and sunnier (I hope) weather, I am in need of a routine to help me fit in my outside chores with my inside ones. And I think I will challenge myself to come up with a flexible routine to help me achieve this. Goodness knows I achieve little enough with just the inside to deal with, but now my garden is calling to me too. So in the next two weeks I will challenge myself to come up with a plan - that is my goal for the last two weeks of this month.

I know it's the babysteps we take most days that will add up to steady progress. But I've proposed to my sister and Spark buddy trading work days on some semi-regular basis for a little extra boost. It hardly matters what each of us might pick to work on, but having an extra pair of hands, new ideas and additional motivation might make a difference on any project we might undertake. I'm seriously thinking closets for myself, and would be happy to pitch in on anything DS might choose.

Do any of y'all have organizing buddies?

Very practical, not overwhelming. The FlyLady system was too much for me, but she's picked out cool babysteps to get started. emoticon

You know those PSAs--Public Service Announcements the broadcast media give away that only last a few seconds? I came up with my own PSA routine to support me. In odd moments throughout the day, I want to remind myself to Put Something Away. Right then take a few seconds and put something where it goes--in the trash, in the closet, on a hangar, in the cupboard, wherever. Want to join me?

Mary's OO report about creating an Oasis of Order in her car, which she introduced by
'tooting' her horn got me thinking. If I can remember to take one unnecessary thing out of my car each time I come home, I would eventually remove all of the clutter.

You know how I like my acronyms, and it made me think of TOOT: Take Out One Thing. And at home, TOOTing can be Throw Out or Toss Out One Thing. Of course, I can choose to take or toss more than a single item. I'm thinking of starting a new streak and seeing how it goes. Wish me luck! emoticon

I just tossed a couple things into the recycling container! emoticon

Taking out the trash? Open the refrigerator & toss last weeks leftovers, the spoiled milk, & that container that looks like a science experiment! Make it a habit to do this every time the trash gets taken out. It just takes a few seconds.

Is starting over, each & every morning!

I waste so much time on clothes that do not fit or just do not flatter me at the weight I am at right now. I stand in my closet every morning before work & try on, rip off, and toss clothes in a heap on the floor because "nothing looks good". Later in the day, I put all those clothes in the hamper where I wash/dry/hang/put them away. Over & over again, this scene is repeated.

Well, no more!
I now place a small, sturdy box on my closet floor (a copy paper box is a good size) & as I try something on that is too big, too small or just plain unflattering, I fold it & place it neatly in the box. When the box is full, I move it to my car & drop it off at Good Will on my way to work.
I get rid of clothes that make me feel fat or ugly, I bless someone else who might need them, & I cut down on repeated laundry.

Is starting over, each & every morning!

Maybe this belongs in the Success Report thread, but I managed to do 2 loads of laundry--*and put the clothes away*--and got groceries--*and put everything, even the non-perishables, away*!

Some of you may have no trouble with such follow-through, but for me this is emoticon

Forgot to suggest this earlier, like before many of you got in cars to drive somewhere for Turkey Day! emoticon
Whenever you take a road trip, build in some extra time to take a short (or not-so-short) walk at each rest stop. It helps loosen up those stiff muscles from sitting too long, and uses up calories, plus you get to breathe some fresh air: win-win-win! emoticon emoticon

Great idea from Cindy-K on one of my organizing teams for chipping away at big jobs and lots of clutter. She changes the room each week, but you could adjust as needed.

So here is what I do:
Each week is a different room. I start at the door and clean in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction your choice. I have 3 collapsable mesh laundry baskets (Throw away, Give away, and Put Away). I also have a kitchen timer. I start by setting up the baskets, set the timer for 15 minutes and grab the first item. I continue quickly not contemplation just take a 3 seconds and decide and then put it in one of the baskets. When the timer goes off. Stop.
Throw Away:
Put everything in the throw away basket in a garbage bag and take it out to the garbage now.

Give Away:
Get a bag or container and put the giveaway into bags for people or thrift store. Bring thrift store to car and drop off the next time you go someplace in the car. The items for people call those people and either arrange to see them this week or have them come get the items. Put them in the closet next to the door.

Put Away:
Put those items away now in their final storage place not a temp "pile".

When done go get a cup of your favorite beverage and relax for 15 mintues (set the timer).

Then repeat the process for however much time you have decided to use for cleaning. I do it only once a day as I work all day and then go to the gym. On weekends I do it twice a day. I also do 1 small load of laundry a day to free up my weekends.

Each week I focus on a different room and I always stop when the timer goes off!

cindy

I may not try this until after the holidays, but it sounds intriguing. I'll have to check out those collapsible mesh bags. If anyone has a good source, please share!

Blessed Be, Amanda

Jennifer's (FlyFrog) emoticon thread post on roasted cauliflower prompted me to write about raw cauliflower. One of the routines that I *sometimes* follow--and which helps me get more fresh/unprocessed veggie servings consumed, and less throwing out of spoiled produce--is to wash and cut up carrots, celery, cauliflower into bite-sized pieces, suitable for dipping. A second step is to put them in small plastic tubs or bags to toss in with my lunch for work (where I will often keep a container of dip in the fridge) or grab at home for a healthy snack.

If I don't do it ahead, I'm less likely to wash, trim and chop when I'm actually hungry--and end up reaching for higher calorie snacks. Sometimes it feels like too much to do on the same day as a big grocery shopping trip; I'm lucky to get all the dry goods put away and the reusable bags back out to the car--or at least by the door. So I try to plan it as a chore the next day, or as soon after shopping as I can, to maximize the chances for healthier snacking.

First, a shout out to HopefulSnail for keeping us reminded of how long until Christmas! Mary and I talked a few weeks ago about how if we started planning now, we could enjoy the holidays more. Then I got sick, but I also put off the planning I wanted to do. (I feel a blog coming on regarding the resistance.) I finally got started last night, listing the activities and tasks I enjoy in the general order of their importance to me. I gave a little thought to scheduling (by the time I had journaled about my procrastination, it was getting kind of late) and this morning I selected those things I want to get done this week: getting address lists and label masters and old Yule letters transferred to the new laptop and labels printed, and to check on USPS guidelines for mailing in order to establish some target dates for packages and cards to go out.

Denise....thanks for the info!!! I love the idea of doing a few reps of something while cooking, etc. I've taken to walking for 5-10 mins at Fred Meyer when I go to get any groceries - hey, any port in a storm, right?!?! Fitting in little bits of exercise is the best thing for me right now - big chunks of time aren't as good.

Great info!!!!

There are some exercises that Spark People have listed that can be done while waiting for dinner to be cooked like wall push ups and leg lifts. I've been trying to do that.

Also when we order Chinese take out we usually get a couple of soups, and I save the containers to put prepared onions in them. I usually have chopped, sliced, and smaller sliced. Sure helps having that ready to go. Also I just got a food processor so I can have grated cheese ready to go also.;

Fitting in exercise outside of my walking breaks at work isn't always easy for me during the week. I often think I'll do something after work, but I'm often tired, and just want to relax and read for a while. Today I decided that rather than one of my more intense workout DVDs, I'd try my newMorning Cup of Yoga routine--not too strenuous or time consuming, after which I would reward myself with pleasure reading. It worked! Now I'll see if I can replicate it a couple times a week.

Thank you, MARY emoticon to you, too!

Yesterday we made shish kabobs with the veggies I got at the farmer's market Saturday. I froze the rest of the grilled veggies emoticon (we ate all the emoticon !). I invited my parents. Yummm . . .

Yesterday I cut up some extra basil when I got some off my outdoor potted herbs. I had read about someone putting them in ice trays for later use but I don't have any. So l laid it out on a metal baking pan in the freezer. After they froze, I put them in a freezer bag--worked great! emoticon

Ooooohhhh, Karen, I like THAT idea too! I usually only think of cutting up veggies to have by themselves (with no- or lo-fat dip, that is) -- but I LIKE the idea of cutting some up to add to other things - pizza, soup, eggs - oh, the possibilities!!! (I feel like I'm channeling Dr Seuss here!)

Add me to the list of those who relate to this.

The bad part is that if I don't find the time to get them cut up, they will probably go bad before I use them up! emoticon emoticon

I generally will freeze some celery, onions, and green peppers when I do cut them up. That way they are ready to be used in cooking, emoticon like for homemade pizza toppings!

I relate to what BOTH of you say....doing things ahead of time definitely helps me take my own (healthier) lunch to work more often. And grocery shopping can be a chore sometimes.

Maybe I can work out a compromise of sorts.....I usually shop on the weekend. If I can consistently cut up some of the veggies and/or fruit I just bought before the weekend is OVER, I'll be ahead of the game!!! I think I'll give it a try this weekend.....

emoticon idea, guys!

Good idea! Unfortunately, by the time I've shopped and lugged it all inside and put things away, I just don't have the energy left right then to do more work.

One of the tools Flylady uses is developing routines, especially morning routines and evening routines that help you get things done and stay organized. One routine I'm trying to develop is sort of a weekly one, or whenever I get groceries. If I can prep the veggies as soon as I buy them--trimming celery and carrots into sticks, separating and chopping caulflower florets into bite-sized pieces--then divide them into plastic bags or lidded containers--along with sugar peas, cherry tomatoes or cocktail cucumbers, then I have fresh veggies to enjoy at work or after work, usually with dip. But if I don't do it ahead, I run out of time in the morning, and I'm tired after work, and not wanting to expend that much effort on a healthy snack. So the trick for me is to do it ahead!
