The most important lesson I've learned is that setbacks are normal and don't mean failure plus many others but this one thing is the main reason why I see possibilities not probabilities.

Even though at times I totally seem to forget this, it would have to be "to transition from "diet" to lifestyle". I've never stayed on a diet, but I always come back to SparkPeople's Lifestyle change.

Great question!

Absolutely my Mother had LOTS to do with it. She spoonfed me sweets daily, pasta 2-3 times a week, and anything else I wanted to eat, she provided. Guess it was a way of life back then, but it has taken me quite a long time to overcome some of it. I'm still working on the rest.

Wow - some incredible answers.............

Maybe a little - I was also a skinny kid, and very active - a bit like beth, but mine was pure enjoyment and not related to weight.

My weight problems started after my back/hip injury a few years ago -

My weight gain is absolutely related to enforced inactivity!

No quitting, No Excuses.

My mother's family was/is quite thin. My mother is actually underweight now that she is elderly. My "fat genes" come from my father's side and there are a lot of large people there. There are also alcoholics and other addictive problems. My mother did focus on weight as we were growing up.

My sister and I struggle with weight. My sister lost a lot of weight and my mother's comment was "you just have a little more to lose." My sister was crushed. She had done great work and wanted recognition for what she had done.

I never talked about weight and obesity with my children but praised and focused on the things they did right. Size should never be a qualification for love.

Nope, never - but I know I really love food due to mom being the best cook ever & it was where the family gathered to discuss events of the day. I was very lucky to be so loved by my parents. Besides preparing some of the most scrumptious meals (rarely low calorie), they required that I get plenty of exercise - even if it was only doing house work. Therefore, I was skinny until I became sedentary (my own laziness caused by weight problem). Body image & weight was never discussed in our house but instead it was how we treated others.

Absolutely!!

My mom struggled with her weight - SO that meant she pushed my brothers and I to do any and every activity she could fit in our schedules.

I did the following:
Acrobatics
Gymnastics
Ballet
Tap
Baton
Brownies and Girl Scouts
Softball (I throw like a GIRL)
Swim lessons every Saturday
Swim team for 5 years

THEN she had my brothers and I compete to see who could lose the most weight in a certain time limit. I started doing that around 11 or 12.

She wasn't a bad mother - her heart was in the right place just the method was wrong.

I STILL love to walk walk walk... and to swim if a pool is nearby. But my weight has been a struggle since age 35 in a more serious way.

I never felt thin enough. :(

I usually plan my day so I'm not hungry in the afternoon, but I do get the munchies. I try to have some healthy choices, but have been known to do some pretty awful stuff, especially when chocolate is involved.

New Question for this week:

**Afternoon hunger pangs hit. What do you do?**

Try my best to ignore them until dinner--I don't want to go over my daily calorie goal!

Open up my snack drawer and choose from the healthful, pre-portioned items that I stash for just this occasion.

Head for the vending machine and choose something that'll fill me up fast.

Eat something portion controlled, like a 100-calorie snack pack.

Drink something and see how I feel later.

What do you usually think about during exercise?

When I am at the gym, I read my Kindle the whole time!
When I am hiking I usually listen to my IPOD.

DURING both, I think about, lunch or dinner!!!!

I usually think about my target steps/miles/cardio minutes when walking. Once I reach my target, I think about how much more I can go over my target, i.e. banking extra for a possible day that I'm not able to get to target. I understand banking is not really a good idea but for me it is because I don't bank over a week & most times the bank is not drawn on.

If I'm strength training, I'm counting & concentrating on form to get the most out of the workout.

BUT - I really just want to get through it all so I don't have it hanging over my head at 9pm. There have been evenings when I'm pushing it at 11:50pm & the pedometer rolls over to the next day before I'm done. HATE those times!!

I usually walk in my town. I listen to books while I walk, so most of the time, I'm concentrating on the story line and not a lot of other thinking.

The times when I need to, I do think about things that are in the front of my thoughts and "process" them. It is a great way to get through the thought process and not become anxious. I'm expending energy, so the munchies are not a problem.

My daughter and SIL walk when they have things to discuss. Sometimes they will stop by and pick up the dog and walk for 2-3 hours as they talk about their concerns. They do a great job of not arguing because they are moving. This works well for them.

My favorite exercise is hiking - when I'm hiking, it doesn't at all feel like work - I think of it as play!
emoticon
When I hike, my primary thoughts are about the trail and surroundings - if I'm leading, I think about the participants - if it's a tough uphill or fast hike, I think about my breath - and sooner or later, it just feels so good, I don't think about much other than how nice it is!

Of course, there are hikes where it's too hot, too cold, too wet or some other kind of miserable and then I just think about getting thru it, haha! As for other types of exercise, it depends but much of the time I just think about goals, motivations and how much longer this is going to last!

Sometimes I try to organize what I need to do for the rest of the day. But mostly it's motivation/goals --- where I'm going to go, what I'm going to do & what I'm going to be wearing when I've achieved various weight loss goals.

How I feel - (good or bad)

Julie
SP member since June 2007

Daily Affirmations:
I am strong!
I am fit!
I am healthy!
I am beautiful!
I can do anything I put my mind to!
I am loved!

"You have to find something that you love enough to be able to take risks, jump over the hurdles and break through the brick walls that are always going to be placed in front of you. If you don't have that kind of feeling for what it is you are doing, you'll stop at the first giant hurdle."
