Invest in green energy. Most utility companies give you the option to pay about $5 extra a month, which is put directly into researching and creating renewable energy.

Write a check. At the very least, donate what you can afford to organizations that help the environment. Visit www.charitynavigator.org/ to find one.

Don't idle. You'll save gas and emissions by parking and turning off the car instead of idling in the drive-thru. It also gives you an opportunity to add more steps to your day.

I have a worm composting bin in my kitchen. It has been there for over a year and a half and my husband just noticed it. I use red worms and I started with 13 of them and shredding from my office. I have a small rubbermaid container 10-15 gallons. It is now half full of compost. I put my vegetable peels and rotten or spoiled fruit and vegetables in it.

It is not conspicuous at all and doesn't smell. Had a bout of mold once but I just turned it under the soil and all was well.

I'm now harvesting soil for my window boxes, flower pots, and back porch herb garden.

It doesn't take up much room no more than a space 2 X 3 feet. I think is is a little less than that.

Lower the water heater. It consumes tons of energy by heating water even when not in use. By lowering it to 120F (49C) degrees, you'll save utilities to boot. Save even more by skipping hot settings on your washer.

6/10pm..

#25 I have solar powered garden lights on one side of my pathways from the road to the back and front doors and now never use the electric outdoor night lights.

#26 Have not heard of "Energy Star" products out here, but do use energy saving light bulbs inside the house and also have my hot water cyclinder thermostat adjusted below 60 degrees.
Find it to be adequately hot without ''boiling" . Also have elected to use the off peak hours
heating times re the water heating .

Look for Energy Star. Next time you have to replace an appliance or electronic device, consider an Energy Star product. It might cost more up front, but usually pays for itself in energy savings.

Don't depend on oil. Many products are made from petroleum—including plastics, soaps, and detergents. To really decrease your dependence on oil, look for plant-based cleaners and plastic alternatives like glass.

April 24:
Go organic. Organic farming doesn't use chemical fertilizers or pesticides, which can pollute the air and water. Choose organic produce and cotton (it's the most heavily sprayed crop) when you can.

Trying to make room in my yard for a compost turner.
I belong to a Freecycle group where we post online if we're looking for or looking to get rid of something. I've found some great things on there. The giver doesn't have to contribute to a landfill and I don't have to spend money on a new item. Win, win!!!!!!!!!

Search for secondhand. Don't let someone else's perfectly good items go to waste. A gently used version of whatever you need exists. Auction websites and thrift stores make secondhand shopping easy and affordable.

Consider compost. Food scraps that end up in landfills can't decompose properly. But composting yard and kitchen waste is easy! And it naturally fertilizes your soil and plants.

NZ 8/06pm...

I can definitely say my home is small ... very small. Built NZ style in the 1950s it has two bedrooms , one sitting/living room bathroom and kitchen which is also eatery/dining. I guess I never was materialistic ( used to drive everyone up the wall for my lack of "ambition" that way emoticon ) but to me it is only a house a roof over ones head it's who is in it that makes it "home". and right now with Winter so very close all I can think of is, just up the road in Christchurch there are thousands who would consider me wealthy .... Much, much easier and economical to keep myself warm emoticon

Sarah - yes, I can see where turnips would get tiresome QUICKLY!

POTRIDGE - what a marvelous idea with the shower puffs! I had not heard that before but it is a great use! I think buying local in most areas is hard during the winter, but I do try for the rest of the year.

Go with natural materials in clothing. Natural materials produce less waste and last longer than man-made materials like acrylics. Choose wool, cotton, leather, silk and linen over synthetics whenever possible.

I too bring my own bags when I go shopping. I have made produce bags by buying shower "puffs" at the dollar store. Cut the string that keeps it a puff and it stretches out to a long tube. I then cut into different sizes and double tie at one end. They hold a lot and the cashiers can see the produce easily. They last a long time too.

Buying local in my area during the winter months is kind of hard.

I must say that I should do better on the rechargeable batteries.

Eat seasonally. Seasonal foods are fresh and more nutritious. Plus, they don't have to travel far to get to your table and are rarely imported from far-away countries.

Just after the packaging challenge, a friend in England told me he had just been to the shops, and as he waited in line to check out his groceries, he watched a very attractive, grey-haired woman pay for her order, then carefully unwrap everything that she could and hand the stack of trash to the astonished clerk, saying "I believe these belong to you." Ha!

I bring my own cloth shopping bags when I go shopping. I have some insulated ones from a conference that I use for frozen foods in the summer!

April 16

Recharge. Using rechargeable batteries is worth the investment. You'll get dozens of uses out of a single battery that would otherwise be used once. That saves you money, trips to the
store, and waste.

#14 ... All of that with bamboo is a new lesson for me.

#15... Packaging ... I have a number of washable cloth shopping bags which I take with me along with a couple of the supermarket "disposable" plastic bags...which I put any meat I buy into then into the cloth bag. Don't buy processed/frozen foods as am back to doing my own. I save the pottles from butter, honey, yoghurt etc and re-use these when freezing from my garden. Also good for making and freezing soups, casseroles, stews when on your own .

KRYS please take good care of you and feel better soon.

14...we lived in Austin, TX for two weeks last year, and had a little suite with micro-kitchen. Went to Whole Foods grocery and in stead of paper plates got bamboo plates, and cutlery. Had never see that before, and they worked very well, lasted a long time. Other than that, it is new to me too.

#15...one of the things I llike about being a member of our farm co-op is that everything arrives on one big box, with, often, no packaging at all. Yes, a tub of yogurt or other things is often less expensive too...and the dog's nose looks really funny if you give it to her to finish LOL.

Sarah - you are doing great!

April 14 (sorry I've been ill lately and trying to keep up!)

Explore bamboo. Floors, furniture, cutting boards and more can be made from bamboo, which is renewable and faster-growing than trees. Bamboo also makes ultra-soft towels, sheets and clothing.

April 15

Reduce packaging. Look for products without excess packaging, like concentrated detergent. In the produce aisle, forgo the plastic baggies. Instead of buying individual yogurt cups, buy one large tub.

Bamboo is new to me - but when I make changes I will certainly look into that medium.

NZ 6/49pm ...

Yes do the odd sewing repair . Locally we have a Landfill Tip but most of the rubbish nowadays is actually re-cyled. Our rubbish collections are made per calendar dates and we sort into either a wheelie bin, a box bin or black bag . All the garden waste is composted at the tip , although most of mine along with kitchen scraps goes into my own compost bin. There is also a re-cycle shop where in fact I have purchased a lot of my garden tools at 50c or a dollar or two each item.Walk down there perhaps once a month to check out the goodies ! Oh ... in my photo gallery, the garden steps and vegetable garden retaining walls were all built from re-cycled bits and pieces by "moi" and virtually cost nothing apart from time and effort ( with handsaw and sledge hammer !) emoticon

Repair things. Pants with holes and broken toasters aren't trash. Instead of sending them to the landfill, sew, mend, and repair things when they break and use them longer.

I love to repair things especially mechanical things! Sewing - not so much! emoticon

When I do print something and there is space on the bottom, I tear that off and use it as scratch paper. We send in our cartridges to Petsmart Charities. We pick up the envelopes at the store and send in 5 at a time. So 4/12 Goal Met!!

April 12 - Print sensibly. If it's not necessary to print something, don't. Decrease your paper margins to save paper and print on both sides of paper. When the ink cartridges are empty recycle them at any office supply store.

Sarah, my dear, it did say hanging up inside is good too. I know many housing subdivisions actually forbid handing of clothes outside in their contracts. Hoping this sees a change soon.

#10 emoticon - I only use the dryer for full loads and put damp items on a string in my laundry room.

#10 emoticon Another failure for me. I absolutely cannot hang my laundry outside. I am in what is known as the high dessert, the red dust blows, and my area is highly restricted and laundry lines must be screened from view. I do hang delicates on a rack inside, so several loads at one time so the dryer stays warm and doesn't have to heat up and down...do the best I can.

April 10 - Hang your laundry. Your clothes dryer is one of the most energy-consuming appliances in your house. Try hanging your clothes on lines or racks outside (they'll smell great!) or inside.

April 8 - Eat without meat, every once in a while. The raising, processing, shipping and storage of meat can negatively impact the environment. Aim for a few meatless meals each week, choosing beans, nuts, and legumes for protein.

April 9 - Drive less. If you can walk or bike to your destination, then do it! You'll get fit, save
money, and pollute less. Choosing public transportation (buses, subways, and trains),
carpooling, or trip combining also helps.

I always turn off the tap when cleaning my teeth. Even when I was a kid.
I take showers only.... 5 minutes max.
We use reusable bags all the time.
I use reusable bottles/containers for my Brita Water.
I sort everything for the recycling bin.
I shred documents.
I pay bills on line where possible.
I walk to the library whenever possible... Not in the pouring rain!
In fact I don't drive a car!
And I'm sure there are lots more things that I need to read on here.
Thanks for sharing!

#5...I'll sort of fail here. Our library is terrible, and very small, and while I am a voracious reader, I don't read much contemporary fiction. However, I use Bookmooch and PaperBackSwap and get and give books that way. emoticon

#6 emoticon We have rain barrels, low flow everything and conserve water as much as possible. We live in the high dessert and water is more precious than anything here.

Hope you feel better soon KRYS. Sarah

April 5 (sorry it is late, not feeling well)
Visit the library. Instead of buying books, CDs, movies and magazines, borrow them. The library is free, local and eco-friendly. Imagine how many resources are saved when hundreds of people share one book from a central location!

April 6
Save water. Turning it off while brushing your teeth is a given. Take it further by installing low-flow showerheads and the savings will add up! Also consider a rain collecting barrel for grass and plant watering.

You must of read my mind- this weekend our local Farmer's Market opens and my son is super excited. I've already posted for our local SP team the info. and hope to see some members there. Time to scope out what is available, pick some farmers advice for my own veggie garden, and see about some good home grown produce.

April 4 - Buy local. On average, food travels 1,500 miles from farm to table. Buying local supports small farmers in your community. It also uses less fossil fuel in transport.

Some facts to ponder:

Our Stomping Grounds
1. The planet is 4.5 billion years old.
2. Global warming followed each of several ice ages starting in the Precambrian time more than 600 million years ago.
3. 1.75 million years ago, ice covered all of Europe and most of North America.
4. 18,000 years ago, winter temperatures were 27 to 36 degrees cooler. Ice Age Florida was like Quebec.
5. As the India tectonic plate pressures the Eurasian plate, Mount Everest is rising at 3 cm. a year.
6. Earth tilts 23.5 degrees on its axis, causing our seasonal weather variations.
7. More than 11 million species live on the planet.
8. Humans have named about 1.7 million.
9. Oceans cover 70% of Earth’s surface.
10. Forests harbor 80% of Earth’s biodiversity.

I have 8 reusable bags in the car at all times. I even remember to take them in to the store with me now LOL.

When we went to Paris a few years ago they did not have free grocery bags. The checker checks you out and you are expected to bag your groceries yourself in the bags you bring, or else you buy them. That will make you remember!

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

April 3 - Bring your own bag. Bring reusable bags everywhere, from the grocery to the mall.
If you can't afford to buy bags, then reuse the plastic ones you already have. If you don't need a bag for your items, politely decline.

Sarah, the new microfiber ones don't need ironing! I don't like ironing either!

SUZYMARC - I shred most everything these days because of the security threat. Recycle people probably hate me when they see those bags full of shreds! LOL

emoticon emoticon We have a blue recycle container that gets picked up every Wednesday night.

I have a big barrel and a "green grocery bag" filled with old rags, since I reuse everything whenever possible. These are our go to thing for cleaning and for my husband to use in the garage or to wash the vehicles.

Another thing I've done is I shred just about all paperwork even junk mail and it either gets recycled in the blue container or I till it into my vegetable garden to help the soil.

. emoticon for #1 We have recycle service every other week for cans, plastics, mixed paper, cardboard. We have to take our glass, however, and I have a car full as I type!

#2 I will commit to using cloth napkins this month. (Oh, I do hate to iron though LOL)

The cloth napkin thing is going to be a hard sell for my adult children (21 & 24) who still live at home. It's a natural for me. I keep a container of rolled cloth napkins on my counter. I'm also a big user of sponges and old worn out wash clothes instead of paper towels.

emoticon My city distributed big blue recycling bins that we can put EVERYTHING recyclable in - no sorting. How easy could it possibly get!

Yeah. Way ahead of you on that one! Picked up some new cloth napkins at a garage sale last year, haven't bought paper since. I have finally gotten my family to cut way down on paper towel use. We go through a roll about every 3 months now instead of in a couple of weeks.

#2 I will look into that one for the future. I just bought a monster bag of napkins. I do occassionally use damp old washclothes as napkins for the messier foods.

Great job everyone. Here is the tip for April 2nd: (continue to check in for #1, but just mark it as such. Thanks for your help!)

#2. Use cloth napkins whenever possible. All disposable items hurt the environment, and that includes paper products like napkins. In the end, you'll save money by investing in cloth, which also looks more sophisticated.

You know I decided to take it a small extra step forward to this approach too- when I walk my route I look for recycleable garbage people have tossed carelessly out of vehicles. Then when I get home on a "Rest" day I will head out once again with a bag and gloves and pick up what I've seen to add it into our recycle bin and make things look naturally beautiful once again. emoticon

emoticon Our area just started recycling pick up this past year. I jumped in with both feet and have been making sure the family does not carelessly through in the garbage can anything paper, cardboard, metal, plastic w/ the numbers 1 & 2, or glass. We do try and clean, sterile and reuse other plastic containers for household storage. I gather up all the grocery bags & when this area gets full I take the whole lot down to the grocery store and recycle at their pastic bag center.

April 1st - Recycle. Most people can recycle more than they do. Paper, magazines, cardboard, cereal boxes, glass, aluminum foil, cans and even grocery bags should go in your bin, not the trash. If you don't have recycling in your area, can you re-use an item that would otherwise get thrown away?
