I do the same as you Jules...I pick what's there and freeze them until I get enough to make something. Today, I'm making apple blueberry pies ! Hubby and BIL requested them yesterday. I used the last of my own canned apples so I have to go and buy some !!! BLAH !
Good for you. Around here it is next to impossible to get anything other than blueberries, strawberries or raspberries fresh. I don't usually check the freezer isle, so not sure if there is any more of a variety there..... I have such mobility issues these days that it is impossible to get out to try to pick my own anymore..... (sigh)
I loved in a very rural area and we used to pick all kinds of wild blueberries, mostly high bush, and they were HUGE! As kids in a very remote area, we would pick huckleberries. I can't remember what Mom made from them, probably jam or something....
In my 20's, my ex and I would go out to lakes and along country roads to pick blueberries. they were mostly high bush but some low bush on occasion if we could find them. The High Bush berries were HUGE.... I liked to make blueberry pie from them.
I hardly eat blueberries any more. I have had some in the freezer for a long time, vacuum sealed and I need to pull them out and make something, just not sure what.
On the other hand, my BIL loves them frozen right from the freezer, with a little milk on them and eats them with a spoon.....
How to Grow Blueberries at Home From Common Sense Homesteading
I grow blueberries but I'll be darned if I can remember what types they are !!! I do know that you have to have 2 different types for cross pollination, so I guess I'm good there !!! (unless you can find a new fangled type that self pollinates)
