My yost berries look good. Blackberry's are wild but not native. I would have more driveway in Yamhill if they were less prolific.

Two questions here please,
I have read about how to collect collard green seeds but don't fully understand. I have left some collard plants unharvested in hope to collect seed and they are now flowering. Do I collect from the yellow flowers?
also, I have some creasy green seeds given to me by an old farmer and never planted them before. I am told to mix them up with corn meal and plant in an area isolated so they will reseed each year. Does anyone have experience with them and if so, share knowledge about creasy greens.
Thank you!

I know salt will kill them and anything under the salt.

Here's a great tool for gardeners, especially in the US. It's a complete plant finder, along with uses and features of the plants.

Have a good look through and see what you think

Pulling out old veggie plants and covering the beds with ground up leaves, grass clippings and straw.

The only things left growing are sweet potatoes, brussell sprouts and green beans.

Did you all get your garlic in for next year?

Hi The only thing I can think of is to cover them at night if it's in the 40's, then uncover in the morning.
A cold frame, Hmmmm. Build one around your plants? Maybe a teepee cover.

I still have some zukes with flowers and my peppers are still blooming...Go figure !!!

Oh I forgot, I have brussell sprouts...waiting for the first frost before I pick any...Sweeter after a frost.

It has turned chilly and breezy here. I have late cukes blooming and a few babies growing. Trying to save them -- and was wondering if a cold frame will save them? Any (other) suggestions?

I've picked beans for 3 days and got a few quarts. I only planted a small patch of green pole beans (tarheel's...you've got to try planting them...so long and so good) So I just canned 4 pints of green beans...I did it the old fashioned way, boiling for 100 minutes...To small of a quantity to carry out the pressure canner...I know Jenny, but I didn't have any dried beans to fill the pressure canner with !
The strangest thing happened...3 of the 4 lids buckled. I've never had that happen b/4.
They popped down so I guess they are sealed !!!???

I'm going to make salsa with my next picking of roma tomatoes...

Busy yesterday in my gardens...
Staked and tied tomato plants, picked blueberries, tied up sunflowers, cut up apple tree, (both fell during the last storm), trimmed old flower heads from lilacs, put down black fabric on grass under squash and pumpkin plant runners, made dill pickles (12 pints)
Today clean up my mess in the kitchen, make bread and butter pickles, cut grass.
Whew !!!

Thanks for telling me how you do your herbs, Patti!

Last night we had zucchini and peppers from the garden in a curry dish that I made with the curry meatballs I did two weeks ago. We had it over couscous. It was delicious! There is a red celebrity tomato that will be ripe enough to pick by the time I get home from work tonight. It's only one little tomato, but I've got two fat cucumbers that I picked earlier in the week so I may make a cucumber and onion and tomato marinated salad.

There are lots of baby romas on those plants, but they are just getting started. Lots of squash blooms and some little tiny eggplants beginning to form. Peppers are looking lively.

I am thankful.

I've gotten two cucumbers a hand full of yellow cherry tomatoes and have some chili peppers that are green and I could pick, but prefer to let them get red. I have a zucchini that will be ready tonight when it's time for supper. While it seems to be raining all around us, I am having to water because it's not raining here and I'm using raised beds which dry out fairly quickly.

I've been doing some pruning around the fence line of our back yard. We have a wooden privacy fence and there are all kinds of things growing in the beds in front of it that the squirrels have planted over the years. I started hacking at it yesterday and should finish in a couple of more days.

I am thankful.

Also, made my mango juice...It was very watery. So I scooped out the pulp of the 27 mangos and made 3 batches of mango jam...very yummy !!!

Weeding the few weeds in the gardens...
I put straw down between the rows and plants. It Really helped keep the moisture in and the weed seeds from germinating...

Last week we had over 10+ inches of rain and on the cool side...This week is Dry, Dry Dry and in the high 80's to low 90's !!!!
Here we go again with the watering.
I strawed the last of our gardens yesterday and watered real good. Hopefully, that will help keep the moisture in.
The deer are eating the tops of my tomato and squash plants.
I thought that by having a dog around, that that would help keep the deer away. Wrong !
One of our local farmers has a pick your own farm...strawberries, peaches, apples and now cherries. I should go get some cherries to can pie filling with.
(I know...Don't end a sentence with a preposition !!!!)
Hope you all had a Super First day of Summer and do enjoy your weekend!

Hi Jackie...I just throw them in a large ziplock bag and freeze them.
Then when I'm canning, I just pull them out and throw them in the pot.
They will be mushy, so it's great for juice and sauce.
Welcome to our Garden !!!!

HI all,

I'm new to gardening, just pittled around abit. This year we've got a large garden. I've planted alot of tomato plants. I have visions of salsa, sauce, canning crushed and stewed tomatoes.

How do you store your tomatoes until you get enough to get enough to can?

Happy gardening! Jackie

Wow, people in the finest Italian restaurants here say that they are the best of the best! I found some large cans of them at Costco and
I use them in all my sauces that require tomato sauce or tomatoes. I wish I could find some plants or seed as I know they would be even better than the canned. One of the chef experts here told me that freezing them whole are the best. A couple times I have opened up the large cans and frozen the leftovers in a glass jar and once in ziploc freezer bags and used them later in recipes. You might consider that.
In the meantime, -- enjoy!
They are wonderful in recipes especially with homegrown and fresh herbs like Basil, garlic, and Italian Oregano together. We love them so much with fresh herbs that I make soups throughout the year and they taste especially good in Vegetable Barley Soup.
Spaghetti Sauce, Chili and Salsa, and cut and drained can be used in cold whole wheat pasta salads with other veggies. I've also made vegetable juice using them. (cheaper than V-8)

OH, My Frost bitten tomato plants are doing Great !!! I think I only lost one plant...
I did have some old San Marazano Italian paste tomato seed from years ago.
I sprinkled them in a 2x2' area in my garden, thinking they won't sprout.
Well, I was wrong !!! I have a bunch of little plants. YIKES !!! What to do with them all ????

Yesterday, planted carrots, kohlrabi, spaghetti squash, long neck pie pumpkins, yellow mellons, Swish Chard, 3 types of lettuce, Radishes everywhere as they come up first.
Sounds like a lot but I only plant in small areas and maybe 10-15 seeds of each.
Today is herb seeds and corn and pumpkins.

Had a great day yesterday...
after a re-rototill of the garden...and put up make shift trellises made from found objects from my DH's barn...rebar, old ornamental fencing, a ladder, etc
Planted my pole beans, peas, more tomato plants, pickling cukes, candy onions and zucchini.
Today is corn, pumpkins, squashes, sunflowers, lettuce in a bowl planter and whatever I have room for.
Also, Jimmy will put the pump in the pond so I can water the gardens.
It felt so great to get that dirt under my nails again...(when I forgot to put my gloves on...)
All of the trees are blooming...Crab Apples, Apples, Cherry, Quince, and the Lilacs (my favorite)

Hi
Usually if they get all spindly, then there is not enough light.
To much water will cause them to rot from the bottom.
Here's a link for trouble shooting seeds planted indoors.

Hope this helps.

This is my second year trying to start tomato plants from seed early. And this is the second year they have sprung up all spindly and then about half have died, looking pinched at the base of the stem...

We're still dealing with a LOT of snow with 15 more inches expected through Monday so I'm not outside, yet. It's been a strange year with weather. I have started peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, and egg plant. Everything looks okay. The tomatoes are about ready to be put into bigger pots. I wish I was enjoying your warm weather Gemini-Sky!

I am thankful.

Not sure why but this year all of my plants started early by seed, so they will be ready for planting a little later, have grown to a certain point and then stopped growing. I am doing the same things I have before and haven't changed anything, and still using grow lights and keeping to correct temp, and watering - but something different this year, anyone else having this issue or anyone know about what might be going on?
Thank you!
