I had a quick drop in weight and then a few days later I had gained more back. There weren't any big changes to my diet, expect maybe extra fiber right before the loss. Water intake is fairly consistent (consistently low, unfortunately) but maybe I drank more on those warm days. The loss was right before my period started and then the gain was mid-flow. Any thoughts on why the swings?

Thanks! I'm pretty evenly proportioned, but I've always had muscular legs, and I've been afraid to do a lot of leg stuff, assuming it would just bulk the muscles up more. Your suggestions make loads of sense!

You may now sigh and throw away your thigh master.
This is my personal problem area, too. Here's what you have to do....
Weight train. Lots of squats and lunges, also yoga standing strength if it's your thing) plus your cardio workouts.
At first, your thighs will look "bigger' as you build up the muscles in your legs. Then, something amazing happens...you begin to burn off the fat that is OVER the now tight muscles, and your thighs start to get smaller. It doesn't happen overnight, and some of us will ALWAYS carry more weight in our bottom halves (ME!).
Don't forget to train your whole body with weights as well...when your shoulders are a bit bigger, guess what looks smaller?!
Good luck! FlowMama

I'm FlowMama: Mommy to four (ages 15-5), and a certified LesMills Body Pump and Body Flow instructor. I also have a degree in Occupational therapy, so I'm big on proper body mechanics in the classes I torment, er, teach on a daily basis.
I have also survived obesity (at 5'8" and 20 years old I was just shy of 200lbs) and a rare form of sarcoma. I practice what I preach--exercise is my personal Zoloft AND T-box (having only one remaining kidney can be such at bummer...). These days I weight train (Body Pump classes, natch), do stationary cycle and Flow classes (Tai Chi, Yoga, and Pilates), and occasionally dabble in Kickboxing and Step.
I am by no means one of "those" instructors--I wear a "real" size (8) and eat "real" food. I exercise to be STRONG and HEALTHY and to be around longer for my kids. I may never wear a size 2 jeans, but I can bench press anyone who does!
Ask away, if I don't know the answer, I've got a great network of instructors and trainers who do.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you our very own resident expert! *drum rolllllll* Welcome, FlowMama!!!
Now, I think it is only appropriate to start by saying that it is this gorgeous lady that introduced me to Rants from Mommyland. We were hanging out at her neighborhood pool, and she said to me, "OMG, you have to go read this blog these two women wrote - they made rules for the pool!" After both of us laughing hysterically, I went home and googled RFM, and laughed and read and laughed some more. The rest, as they say, is history!
I will also tell you that this lady is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. She makes me laugh, cry, empowers me, kicks my butt and is always overflowing with the exact advice I need to hear. She also tells me to quit whining - lol. OH! But she is ALSO the one that told me the other day that I lost a chin - and you HAVE to love that kind of friendship!!!
So, I will let her introduce herself to you, but just know that she is absolutely qualified in health, nutrition and fitness, and is here to help us with all of those frustrations and questions and struggles we're all facing.
The Minister of Ass Reduction (GCB) and I decided the best way to do this would be to create FlowMama her own forum, that way you can post any question to her by subject matter. If you have a question, it just might already be there, or it might be helping someone else to read the answers before asking questions. :)
So, give it up for FlowMama!!!
