It's a ME day - no appointments and I'm going to the mall for a look-around - and a bit of a walk-around. Might convince Eldon to go out for lunch event.

Make that 3 for "Let's make the most of each day together now." It is so nice when our members say something that becomes a memory for me. Another good example was Alice with

"I thought tomorrow may not be so good, so I seized the day"

Sounds like a great topic thread.

I so admire your loving care of your dear man. I do fear becoming a burden if my mind goes before my body. My folks did not live long enough for me to judge if that is part of my heritage, but I have seen it first hand in my paternal grandmother. Bless her heart. Then Joe's own dear Mom had increasing dementia before her end at 91. Joe's mind is so sharp, but his knees are not good. My body seems healthier than his, but my memory is not sharp. Hopefully we will balance each other out with love and care.

I too love your comment, "Let's make the most of each day together now." emoticon

Memory, criticism, negative thoughts .... all are such an important part of taking care of myself. DH is such a "look at all sides of an issue" kind of guy - always was, it was what made him successful in his career - but drives me nuts at times. If I say "The sky is clear" he will respond with "I see some little clouds over there in the west".

Irene, your comment is so true. "Lets make the most of each day together now."

I was told its ok to lose your car keys , what is worrying is not knowing what they are for when you find them, a friend had that happen with get husband. She told him they are car keys, he went to the car but didnt know how to use the keys then. That was the first sign he had dementia. He is very ill now , like a small child. Heartbreaking for the family. Lets make the most of each day together now. Irene

oh, good topic. This is why I like a separate thread to discuss a topic.

Sometimes anger issues seem to creep in when I am trying to explain how something is not working for me, so let's discuss it. It if perceived that I am criticizing, when to me, I am just trying to make my part easier to deal with. I enjoyed hearing how Joe did not take it as criticism, and reacted positively.

Memory issues, certainly we are all facing that, and it is soooooo frustrating!!!! Honestly, I just had it in my hand, where did I put it??? What was I in this room for??? Where are my keys, my purse, my gloves......AHHHHHHHHHH! frustrating.

I do say one thing and that is, I may have lost my keys, but I did not forget I had a car.

Laugh or cry, for sure, Irene.

Great to read how we all are coping

I expressed my concern to Joe that he wouldn't be a good caregiver if my memory continues to deteriorate. He was surprised, but I find his criticism when I lose things, or can't find things disconcerting. I guess he really didn't realize how his sharp comments hurt. He has done an about face which I really appreciate.

Caring for ourselves can mean making our feelings known to those who love us.

He is so grand to accompany me to the mall and sit in the cafeteria while I walk daily. He shows his love and pampering in so many delightful ways. Definitely a keeper, my Joe.

I listened to my body yesterday, I have a permanent ankle problem. Most days I cope with it. Yesterday it was painful and swollen , so I had a rest day. I did essential chores then sat down with my I pad, my cross stitching and phone to hand, I enjoyed that day and my ankle feels better for it today,
Have a good day. Irene

Hugs, Irene. I know the waiting is so hard. After these test results are back you will at least know what's going on. I usually go as far as I can with Eldon when he has tests but there are waiting rooms available close by in most cases. Sometimes they won't let you go right in with them.

I was outdoors today, did lots of walking in stores but couldn't really measure many miles. I need to get a FitBit!

Thanks for your concern. I do usually go with my husband at hospitals I assumed yesterday he would be escorted too and fro from the scan. I was watching out for my dil who had taken us there but was still trying to find a parking slot!
M has no sense of direction now, its one reason he had to give up driving.
I am wary of going in hotels now as he gets lost in them , it will seem a long wait for scan results , but I need to know. Need a diagnosis a name. Then we can move forward find what treatment is available and what help we can get. One day at a time.

Hi all,

Irene, I just wanted to mention that when my husband had an appointment I went with him, and made sure that the nurse etc. bring him back to me. I know the one time he went on his own, two hours later, he finally showed up for his appointment. From that point on, I was there. Memory problems are so frightening to both the person who is having trouble, and the person who is the caregiver. Do remember to take care of yourself. Easier said than done, I know.

Thanks for getting back to us, IRENE. I am wondering if someone might have escorted your DH back to you, that was stressful for him to be lost. I wonder if you might ask to accompany him either into the testing room, or to the area where he will be. Then at least you two would be lost together, lol. My DH is under going tests, and I see other women going right along with their men, or visa versa I suppose, while I chose to sit in the waiting room. I am not one to be forward and just assume I can go too, and you may be like me. On many of his visits I have just walked merrily along with him and no one has stopped me. I may be reading this situation wrong, but it sounds like his memory problems are a serious issue, and you really need to keep a close eye on him. Hugs to you.

Irene, those hours sitting and waiting are hard. Glad the scan is over and you will soon know what's happening. Too bad it takes so long to get the results, though.

Take care of myself .... maybe not today. Lots of errands out, grocery store, doctor appointments. ----- no, that's the wrong attitude. YES, TODAY! Even when there are chores to do I can have a good mental attitude about myself. I can make good decisions at the grocery store. I can sit patiently while waiting for gas for the car. I can walk when I get home even if it is raining. I CAN.

Thank you for your support and good wishes. Dh went in for the scan I waited.
He appeared in the opposite direction he had got lost then been wandering round the hospital looking for me! The scan was ok he said but results only sent to the doctor in 2 weeks! So we may know something, by end of Jan . So we wait and see, Irene

IRENE, you are so right about "not knowing" being so stressful and exhausting. You may not get results today, maybe additional tests will be ordered, but at least this is a step in the right direction of learning why your DH is having issues.

Be sure to come back and let us know how the day went, I assure you, friends on line are of great benefit to our own mental state. I will send prayers with JANE, there is strength in numbers.

Good morning team, a new week always makes me think ahead and see h where I need to change things, since Christmas I have slipped a little on my eating plan. There are always excuses of course. I am concerned over my husbands mental health. We go today for a brain scan for him. I am sure we will not be told anything today but its a step in the direction of getting answers. I am enjoying our conversation, Angela, and am believing you are now coping better with your mothers health situation. This is not an easy time, we went through this with my DH's mother, we lived far away, but watched Terry's sister go through a situation like yours. Best advice came from a brother when he said no one could make Mom happy, Betty had to make herself happy. Keep up with the Yoga, that will be so very beneficial. Let us know how the ultra sound went.

Trading in my walking boots, for a snow shovel today, ugh.

Thank you Sheila,

I know it is going to get more difficult with Mum but I also now feel that I will cope better than I have been since I have taken myself to task and promised myself that I will take care of me, now. DH is being very supportive too and that of course is a great help.

Currently I'm at the struggling stage of exercise where I know how much better I feel after I do it but getting my butt out of bed or off the couch to go and do it is difficult. I just realised that I am suffering from PLUM syndrome too ;op

I am getting medical attention and I know that the worry of my nagging side pain will soon be sorted as once I've had the ultra sound tomorrow I will know for sure if it is anything more serious than just a strained muscle/tendon. I think the worry of not knowing coupled with overwork is what has been causing all the headaches.

Morning yoga, walking and positive thinking are getting me out of the doldrums and I've also now got the help of this fantastic group again so I'm going to be just fine.

It's good to hear even you run into trouble following three threads! Thank you for being there. You're the emoticon

I am sorry to be away, and even sorrier I missed seeing Angela's post. I now had time to go back and check and wanted to comment to Angela.

Firstly, Angela, I don't think it matters where you post, but you may find more people on the Chatterbox thread to discuss things with. Is that even a sentence????? I run into trouble trying to follow 3 threads, time being the issue, but I don't see a way around it while we are talking about such an important subject. I think most would enjoy you to communicate on the Chatterbox thread when it is this important a subject. I am just glad I found your post.

You have a particularly difficult situation and you really need to put yourself first, NOW. It is not going to get easier with your MOM, I am sad to say. Or it does not seem like it from an outside point of view who really does not know the whole situation. I just know you have had a very difficult time with this situation all along, and you are obviously in need of medical attention for yourself. Medical, and personal attention.

Having time for PLOM is an interesting concept. Taking time out for myself has been something that I have not done for a long time. I have been trying but after so many years of looking after someone other than myself, I think I have forgotten how to do it. Well, I guess I am just going to have to take charge of myself and DO IT!!!!!!

With the encouragement of all my friends here, there is absolutely no reason why I should not be able to DO IT!!!!!! emoticon

"controlling stress, improving on our sleep, enjoying life to include ourselves" sounds perfect :o)

I read on the chatterbox thread and then read this thread too. Where is the best place to post to join in the taking care of me challenge?

From early days I took care of my younger sisters, then as I got older and my parents started drinking I took care of them too. I got married and took care of my husband and our three lovely children. Now our children are all grown up and take care of themselves but I still have my insulin dependant diabetic husband to care for.

My mother who suffers from dementia is in a residential care home but I need to visit and look after her needs and her finances. My sisters live overseas and can do nothing to help with her. It is hard work and very stressful but I feel that we are now closer than ever.

I have been unwell for several months and the doctor says it is because I care for others but not myself. On Monday I have an ultrasound to check out a long lasting pain in my side which was thought to be muscular skeletal but does not get better with physio or anything else.

Then after the ultrasound I have a shoulder and head deep massage booked. It seemed an odd thing to do and I'm a little nervous of having a sports masseur coming to the house to do it, but he sounds very nice and but doctor said I needed the muscles relaxing by a really good sports massage so I am doing it. Plus DH will be in the office in the garden - LOL!

I am getting back on track with yoga and walking and I am revisiting all the healthy eating books and topics to get my eating sorted out too. I even told my husband that I will be cutting back on my office hours as I'm getting ready to retire. He wants to continue running the business so I told him I will gladly do a few hours a week to do our own accounts but after this summer I will be cancelling my AAT membership so I don't have to do CPD courses and keep up to date with taxes.

So like all you lovely people, I will be looking after me too!

LOL, I had never hear of PLOM, but certainly, Poor Little Old Me. Been there, done that, still fall into that hole.

Donna, my first search was for Aquasize, and you are right, they want you to put in calories burned. I then noticed my search for Aquasize turned up O results. So that means it is not something Spark tracks, so they are giving you the chance to add it yourself. This is not what you want to do.

Instead SEARCH for Water...........and you will see some choices come up, one being Water Aerobics, another being Water Jogging. They might be the closest to what you are doing, and you only need to add TIME and then the calories will be calculated for you when you ADD TO TRACKER.

I walked about a mile yesterday - didn't map it but was out for 30 minutes. I used to get 3 miles in an hour but I'm moving slower now.

I'm working on my PLOM attitude. I get into the PLOM (Poor Little Old Me) mode at times - and I'm sure it shows on the outside also. Just look at PLOM and what I am doing for you. Just pay attention to PLOM and pick up your own stuff. PLOM - I had to empty the garbage cans again. PLOM - I stayed indoors just so I could be around IF you needed me.....

Taking care of yourself means making decisions that you are not used to doing. I think we have grown up in an era where we pretty well did what was expected by someone else. Yesterday I booked my flights to Victoria, British Columbia for 6 days. It is a Volkssport event and I am joining my walking friends. Making my own decisions and doing things on my own becomes easier every day.

I got my 10k in yesterday, too!

What a great topic!

I've spent so many years putting myself second to take care of the needs of spouse, children, in-laws, out-laws, sisters, nieces and just about anyone else. This is my time.

I'm going to walk more. I mean really walk. Not just around the house or grocery store, but the outdoor walks that clear the head and soothe the psyche.

I'd like to say no excuses. But today I didn't walk because of upset tummy - didn't want to get far from the house.

My goal is 4 miles daily, and 10 floors.

My Fitbit keeps me accountable. I have been surpassing that goal daily, but I must get the quilt done by Saturday, so I am not upping my goals. JoAnn Fabric Store has the batting I needed on sale, and that was wonderful. So encouraging.

In the meantime I have created a second quilt top for my house. The second one will be the quilt top I use in my long arm class. Very satisfying.

Day 2. I did a mile w/Leslie. I dusted off all the measuring cups and spoons and scale. In order for me to be accountable to myself, I have to measure and not "eye ball" it! That got an additional 20 pounds on me that I had worked so hard to lose last year.

It will be Saturday before I can grocery shop, I still have tons of apples from the holidays. I will stock up on veggies, chicken and fish on my shopping trip.

Goodmorning,

What great motivation. Thanks S1 for starting the threat. So many great ideas for 2013. I will start my saying I am cleaning out my fridge this morning. Then it will be ready for when I shop for all those great vegetables and fruits. I know some of fruits and vegetables are quite expensive at this time of year, at least in my part of the world, so a suggestion is to look into the frozen section of your grocery store. I have looked into it, and frozen is just as nutritious.
Just a thought.

To be continued............

One thing about starting with the new gym is the possibility/probability of meeting new people. I do think having a secondary reason for going to the gym is a great benefit. It is fine and dandy to go just to exercise, but a friend there you can chat with and get to know is the added bonus and keeps us going back. Watch that ice and snow, and think about looking into grippers for your boots, I use mine all the time. Delores, I will get you an link and send it to you privately.

The link to the spreadsheet is on the bottom of this post, if you are not on it, and would like to be, add your name to the bottom and what you are tracking, or just sparkmail me and I will do it for you. Then I will set it up so the data you post will add up for you and accumulate next month.

Good to see more join in, and let's keep this thread on track for Motivation and Challenges.

Hi all, I have decided to try a new gym that opened very near me this summer. I hear that there is a deep discount for seniors so I might investigate. That might is because we are finally getting snow and ice and I don't want to fall. I have new boots and I plan to investigate as soon as the temperature rises about 32 degrees. It has been in the 20's all this week. I definitely need to get back on the wagon.

I will appreciate any help. all my blood work before was right on. I complained a bout a dull pain in my right side. they did ultra sound then ct scan and found a tumor the size of a peach in the left kidney. was a lucky find, I am very fortunate, most of these go undetected till its too late. I need help with a diet plan. I am watching what I eat but improvement is better. would appreciate any advice. thanks Doris QC.

I am going to continue to concentrate on my walking and have set a goal for myself to reach 2013K in 2013. This year I did 1299k, last year, 269k.

I also must concentrate more on my portion sizes. There are ways to do that, besides just eating half, lol. I can start by using a smaller plate. Visually, it will look the same.

I also need to increase my water intake. I am one of those people who never seems to be thirsty, and that is not a good thing. Especially with all the walking I do.

Good to see so many committing themselves. I think the FitBit is going to be most helpful, too.

I'm in!! I'm still trying to learn my Fitbit. One of the things I'm doing this time around is breaking my goals down into small manageable bites so to speak. Instead of saying I want to lose 100 pounds, I want to lose 15 pounds by February 28th. I started logging my food today, too!!

As we get older, and we have seen too many resolutions come and go, this may be the year we resolve NOT to make yet another New Year's Resolution.

Instead, as Lola suggests in our New Year's Newsletter it is time to focus on ourselves. It is time to work on things like controlling stress, improving on our sleep, enjoying life to include ourselves.

Instead of depriving ourselves of things we enjoy, and forcing ourselves to do things we don't like to do anyway, let's stick with our normal routines and just improve on them. Like to walk the beach? Do it more. Like to swim? Increase your lengths. Like to bake or cook? Think about gluten free recipes, or low fat, low calorie choices.

Don't change your life, take charge of your life.

What are your plans? Share your happiness, your enthusiasms, your goals, your triumphs! Tell us the new ideas that are working for you. I see those FitBit's are making lots of new friends! Tell us more.

We are great listeners and often very helpful in the encouragement department. It is all about YOU and ME. Let's stick together and we will reach heights we never thought possible.
