Ok...I'm a day late, a dollar short & need another hour of sleep! Here's this last week's challenge & the final push:

Thanks so much for that kind response, Gail.
I figure, he's with me for 2-4 days, visiting- if he ever says he wants to come for a detox, I'd help him, but it doesn't make sense to be holier than he and make him suffer when he isn't ready to change.
We all, all have to do our changing for ourselves, bottom line!
Hope your Mom finds her own joy. That sounds like a rough spot.

That sucks, Mare. I mean...in a way, you could say "Hey, he's detoxing! I'll help him get thru it & maybe it'll be a start for him to change"; but then again, it's heartbreaking because he may go thru withdrawl and just go back to his old habits.

The best you can do is to offer help, be there to encourage him & let him lean on you. If not, realize that some people you just can't change.

Bear with my ramblings-I know on my trek for changing to a healthier lifestyle, I've had my ups & downs. We all have. I've had my relaps when I drive thru that damn place with the golden arch's...but I always keep trying. What's the saying? Never Quit Quitting!!! Right?

Another thing that I learned (and mostly from my dysfunctional family) is that you can't really change anyone. They have to want to change themselves.

Little ditty-I used to smoke years ago. I started in high school & even though I'm asthmatic, I'd cough my way thru it. Thought it was cool-peer pressure thing. Did it for 12 years. My younger sister who's the "whale saver/tree hugger" type always pestered me with facts & figures, stating how bad it was for me & how much it cut from my life (I always retorted that it was cutting the last years of my life & they're not fun when I'm getting my tush wiped by "Bruno" the direct care worker! LOL). Anyhoo...it was when I finally had enough of the chest pain & coughing up a lung that I decided to quit. Cold turkey, just tossed them one day & really never wanted them again.

Same with the bottle or the fast food or drugs. Whatever your crutch may be. If you don't really want to quit FOR YOURSELF, then it won't happen.

My mom & dad always had a strange relationship. She tolerates his bull & he's always got a snide remark about her weight. It's been a struggle for YEARS. She keeps trying to loose the weight for HIM, not for herself. She's lost quite a bit, but I see her old habits keep creeping up on her. She also isn't sparked to loose the weight for herself to make her feel better. So, when the weight comes off, she's still incredibly depressed. I know when I drop even just a pound or two, I'm elated! I'm doing this for ME. It sounds selfish, but sometimes we need to be selfish, I guess.

Just be there for him Mare & try to encourage, but regardless of his choice, he's still your brother. You'll love him regardless of how you ache to see him that way.

PS- yes, the dog thing is FAB! I love doing exercise when it sneaks up on me in FUN activities

It really does sound like a bit of exercise! Reminds me of the days when I did craft shows and had to carry all the crap in...and then carry it all back out at the end of the day! lol!

Every Time I hear that dirty word "Exercise" I wash my mouth out with "Chocolate" !!!!!!!!

Gail, the dog show thing sounds like the best kind of exercise- the kind you do without thinking 'time for exercise'!
I had my brother over for the weekend. He is breaking my heart- not taking care of himself,a very sick, alcoholic man. Sigh. I love him so. I forgot to get him any booze, and he started to detox on me... ouch. I had to go get him something from the store at 9am.

WOW...maybe I'll just have to start paying YOU for my yogurt! I usually buy the big Dannon quart of vanilla. It lasts me a week. My typical breakfast is a cup of yogurt with frozen strawberries & a banana. If I have granola, I might add that.

As for the dog shows...You can't even imagine. I've been showing every weekend since April 25th. It typically involves packing an EZup tent, all of the crates, a cooler for me, a water jug for the dogs, a chair for me, a mat & crates, their training bag, my turf shoes, setting it all up when I get there, walking around at 7am chatting with friends & exercising the dogs, then checking in, finding my courses & when I run which dogs, then going in for a briefing & walk through for each course, warming up myself & the dog before each run...running which is all out 30-90 second sprint as fast as we can while doing serpentiens, threadles, pivots, & trying to keep up with a dog that can run 5-7 yds per second, then doing a cool down & running back to check our scores; all the while working the show (setting up equipment, score keeping, timing each run, running paperwork sheets back & forth, etc.). Pack it all up & do it again the next day. Each day usually starts out at 5am when I leave the house until 7-8pm when I get home, unpack, get the dogs fed & then crash!!! You really have to come out to a show & see it one day!

You would be surprised at how easy it is to make yogurt! I bought the stuff on amazon. The yogurt maker comes with 8 containers. I bought 8 more plus starter and it was around $60. It has already paid for itself! Basically, all you is heat a quart of milk on the stove until boiling. Let it cool down to the add starter stage. (comes with the thermometer that tells you when.) Add starter, divide milk up between the containers and cook for about 12 hours. I figured it out once. A gallon of milk-if you use the whole thing makes about 32 containers. It costs about 6 cents a container to make it. Of course, depending on what you add to it-will increase the cost. I have homemade strawberry jam in the freezer I add to it for sweetener. I also add either blueberries or bananas and top off with homemade granola. If I'm feeling really crazy I add cinnamon and vanilla. I used to buy the yoplait yogurt. Not on sale that stuff is anywhere from .60 to .80 cents a container. So, I figure, I'm eating something healthier that costs less!

Yesterday's walk was for Autism. With my son having it, I felt it was a good cause to start with! lol! And yes, I would imagine any type of dog training is a lot of work-for both human and animal! But it does sound like what you do is even more work! Good for you!

I did 2 5k's in my life (breast cancer walks)...well, those were the ones I did on purpose VVVBG!

I'm wanting to really train for one again, but I find it much more fun doing my dog shows than training for something like that. For those that might think that I prance a dog around in a circle...it's not THOSE kind of shows. I run agility dogs. They do the hard work, honestly, by running thru tunnels & flying over hurdles. Still, I've been known to put on 10 miles over a weekend doing the outdoor shows. I should've logged how many I did this weekend, but didn't

I would've been interesting to find out because my lil' piggies are squealing today!

BTW- HOW did you make yogurt? and isn't it just cheaper to hit the grocery store?

OK-maybe I didn't bake the yogurt-but I did make it! lol! I wish I was baked...my body still aches from head to toe-especially the heal spur...if I were baked I would probably still hurt...but wouldn't care! lol!

Sounds like you had a busy, but productive weekend! Mine was just crazy! lol! Had counseling for my son Saturday morning, a b-day party for an 18 yo in the afternoon, bar hopping that night, and a 5k walk Sunday morning. Word to the wise-don't attempt a 5k anything after a night of drinking and dancing and not getting home until after 2...especially when you have to be up at 6! emoticon emoticon But...I did it! my first 5k!

and then I came home and took a nap...but then I baked bread and muffins and yogurt-so all was not lost! lol!

Yes, I admit...I'm a slacker. I've been so busy that I haven't been on the web. I got a new PC at home & can't get it working properly, so I'm not on the 'puter at night. I try to sneak in a few posts during the day at work...but work's been hectic (mgmt's taking vacation, so us bean-counters are busting our butts. nice, huh?)

Not to make excuses, but I've got a rescue dog that I'm still trying to place, so I've had my hands full with 5 dogs at my house. 1 old cranky one, 1 that wants to rule the roost, 1 that's old & in chemo treatments, 1 young wildchild & the foster dog that's young & even WILDER than my wildchild! I started agility training with the young one & MAN is he a handful.

This past weekend we had a training session at a friends house, tore apart my house to paint the bedrooms, rearranged both bedrooms & got a new bed, tried AGAIN to get the damn computer up & running (with no luck), cut the lawn, weeded 2 flower beds, took the foster on a adoption day visit with a prospective family, took one dog to the vet for a nail problem, tried to clean part of the garage & hauled a TON of trash to the curb (God, I hope they take it all!LOL)

So, needless to say, I haven't really had much time. That was just the past two days! WHEW!!! I'm beat!

So, yes...I admit I'm a slacker to the group. Sorry to have let you guys down with tracking points, but I am trying to still post a weekly challenge for you. We're back to LEGS this week...so everyone that's been like me-put that pedometer on & start tracking those steps!

I don't know if Duncted is keeping track of the points or not but either way you could use the point system to compete with yourself. You know, try to get more points then the day before or the week before.

Weigh in Friday?
I did 1 3/4 hours of hiking today in Tilden Regional Park. First hour was uphill- 3/4 hour return trip. Dang, it totally kicked butt to be doing it... pretty, pretty walk. Dang, I'm lucky.
I've been doing arm exercises at least every other day. So... why don't I post thme?
Is any body scoring this?
Why are we having points?

Rode my bike today- HILLS- I walked up one of them. I was just too pooped. Still, I kept a brisk pace going up the hill. 62 minutes of riding.
I need to do more hills.

Went for a nice run yesterday and got caught in a DOWNPOUR! Hung out on the front porch of a vacant house for about 15 minutes until it let up enough for me to jog home, lol.

82 minutes of walking along the Bay- 10 points. I then stopped and worked out in the cushy grass- sit ups, yoga stretches, bench and wall push ups.

Oh Darn! I was doing yard work on Sunday! Providing my knee will cooperate-I do want to get a bike ride in! It takes me about an hour to do 10 miles...at least it did last year! lol!
Let's hope the week stays nice!

This week is: Spring has Sprung!!!
For most places, the weather's finally breaking & it's so beautiful outside! Take the opportunity to move your workout to the great outdoors!

10 points for every hour of exercise that's outside!

Take the dog for a walk, take the kids to the playground, get out there & start your gardening!!! Whatever it is, do it outside (Jay & Keith...that's not what I'm talking about! LOL)

OK, I've been totally slacking on the SU challenge. But I started the SP bootcamp yesterday, so that will get me doing a bit more strength training. Still running/walking regularly. Hope everyone else is doing great!

Did circuit training today(Tuesday)(definite cardio - 20 minutes)
3 circuits with various crunches as last circuit,
2 different crunches each circuit
30 reps each circuit - total 90 reps

also did 25 minutes of free weights

Add another to the injury reserve list. I have a severely sprained ankle, possible fracture, waiting to hear from radiologist. I last exercised on Wednesday and I think that was 20 minutes of cardio. I have had at least 5 freggies each day since then. I will do what I can in terms of the challenge but am unable to do any cardio where I involve my feet

Funny- I haven't done much since Wednesday. Thursday & Friday I played with my son- picked up my brother Friday afternoon- he isn't feeling so good, so I went to bed same time as he last night, and I got 13 hours of sleep... hmmm, to make up for the 4 hours of sleep I got on the 'oh, wow, I'm sailing to Hawaii' decision making night.
Hanging with my brother Sat and Sun will be def slow. Brother can barely walk, his back is so bad.
Scratch 3 for family. I'll be back on the horse Monday, after playing caretaker and sweet sister. I'm going to borrow a massage table and give him a one hour massage.
That's good sister, if not good cardio, hey?

Add me to the injured list! lol! Went to the doc today 'cause I was thinking about doing a 5k run in a few weeks. (yeah, what am I thinking?!?) Been having some pain in my knee. She said probably from over use and I need to take it easy on working out. Ugh! Got an anti-inflammatory and we will see how that goes! Yeah and the 5K run is probably out! lol! She did say I could probably do the 5K walk if I take it easy...


I'll be doing core and upper body strength training and taking short walks. Might have to ditch the doggies since they pull too much...

Na, that's ok. It's just been hectic this week. I host dog agility shows (I mean that I really do HOST them, I do all of the paperwork, rent the building, make sure that everything is up to par, I'm the grand pooba, the big cheese, the ring leader...lots of work before & after). Anyway, my show is this coming weekend so I've been working hard at my "real job" this week as one of the girls is out & then I go home to work until 1am on paperwork & such. I'm just swamped, that's all. This week & next week will be a bit hairy, but I'm ok :)
