Goal:
3x Curves; or other exercise
2x 5000+ steps; or weekly 25,000+ steps

Continuing to meet my goal. Last week, I only went to Curves twice, but I took a 15 minute walk instead of the 3rd time.

np, Propman.

Perhaps there are others who are exercising at lower levels, too, and they choose not to post because they worry, also, about not exercising enough.

Especially on a site for people with MS, we need to be aware of varying levels.

Propman --

Just set your own goals. Goals that are realistic for you. We all function at different levels, and have different time commitments. Good for you for exercising as much as you are. My exercise goal is simply to walk 25,000 steps per week (not NEARLY 10,000 steps per day), and to go to Curves (or substitute something else) 3x a week.

Yesterday, I did a simple 15 minute Chair Yoga session, since I missed one of my Curves days. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrgMxCwXfMc It's just gentle, easy yoga. Good for relaxation and stretching, but, doesn't burn hardly any calories. I still count that as exercise.

WOW, you folks are amazing! Am just getting in walking everyday (not always 10,000 steps) with some weights (3-5 x's/wk) and stretching (fund out i'm not very flexible). Kudos to those who have the option(s) to swim/bike/hike, etc. Unfortunately, my job and family don't allow for all that. Peace.

We all set our own individual exercise goals. Our personal goals often have to be "modified", in comparison to what others can do, due to our disability. But, we can still "move"!

Hope you are all doing some kind of regular exercise -- whatever it is.

Continuing to exercise regularly.

I've usually been fairly resistant to the idea of exercise, although, sometimes, over the past 10-15 years, I've done something regularly for brief periods of time.

I joined Curves in August, and, have rarely, stuck with anything for this long. Except for once in 1998 when I walked 5x a week for about a year. I only lost about 20 pounds that time, and when I quit walking, the weight came back on.

This time, following a 60-pound weight loss WITHOUT exercise, I began exercise to maintain my weight loss. I don't EVER want to be obese again, so, I hope I'll continue to stick with it.

Good for you Barrie.

I've been making my goal during March and April.
Goal: 3x Curves + 2x 5000+ steps

Sometimes, I substitute a Saturday Zumba class for one of my Curves workouts. Sometimes, actually, I've been doing a little bit extra.

You're already well on your way, BARR, to improving on Feb and March. And, it used to feel discouraging to me if I thought that I need to make strategy additions every month. (I'd think: I don't know if I WANT to do more than what I'm currently doing.)

You don't have to increase goals every month. Just make progress in something:
-- could be succeeding at one specific goal that you set,
-- .could be setting a temporary goal and changing it next month, instead of adding additional ones each month (because that "changes things up", and that can help you avoid or bust plateaus, etc). Or, you might surprise yourself and be willing to add effective goals in more permanently. Weight maintenance is going to require some permanent lifestyle changes.

It looks more impressive than it is, because I also keep track of just the daily regular steps on my pedometer. I actually "exercise" about 3x a week, usually. And, I don't push myself very hard when I do.
However, I usually burn a little over 200 calories during a 30 minute Curves circuit. Without that, I'd probably be adding an extra pound on the scale every 5 or 6 weeks, because 3500 calories equals one pound. So, even though I don't do alot, it's wa-a-ay more than I used to do, and it's helping (sort of) to keep my age 50+ weight off. I have to work pretty hard at maintaining my weight loss. I'm so glad that I lost it before this peri-menopause stuff began, otherwise it would've been a lot harder to get it off in the first place.

F, 3/1- 30 minutes Curves circuit, followed by stretching; 5167 steps
S - 30 minutes "modified" Zumba; 6200 steps
S - 2449 steps
M - skipped Curves; 3952 steps
T - 2907 steps
W -30 minutes Curves circuit, followed by stretching; 5668 steps

Mar 7 - 13: My pedometer needed battery replaced yesterday, but, I remember that I had enough days with 5000+ steps. I also did 2 days Curves circuit + a day Zumba at Curves. Skipped 1 circuit day, but, it's OK, since I substituted zumba.

Th, 3/14: 2312 steps
F: 30 minutes Curves, followed by stretching; 4220 steps
S: Went to Zumba, but only did 10 or 15 minutes; 5052 steps
S: 2627 steps
M: 2786 steps
T: 30 minutes Curves, skipped stretching; 5440 steps
W: 5748 steps

F, 3/22 - 30 minutes Curves, followed by stretching; 3939 steps
S - 15 minutes Zumba, followed by stretching; 2345 steps
S - 5489 steps
M - 30 minutes Curves, followed by stretching; 4054 steps
T - 4617 steps
W - 30 minutes Curves, followed by stretching; 4487 steps
Th - 3849 steps
F - Skipped Curves because I went out for Good Friday brunch with my husband. 5417 steps
S - 30 minutes Zumba, including stretching (I actually made it through the whole class without needing to quit early.) Walked to Sonic for supper. 8835 steps

KAT and BARR --

It's a good strategy to post, even when you aren't as regular as you'd like to be. It helps to keep you accountable. (Sometimes, posting makes you more accountable to yourself, too -- not just to others. And, being accountable to yourself is really the most important, because you are the only one who can choose to make changes.)

One of my "mantras" is: Aim for progress, not perfection.

So, take a look at February and March. And, it's OK to simply make an April goal of progress. Just try to do better than last month. That's good enough.

Also, don't worry about comparing yourself to others. We're all at different points with our MS. And, even if we didn't have MS, we all have different goals, different levels of commitment, different abilities, different strategies, different lives. Simply set goals that "fit" you and don't worry about others.

We can do it!

I have only been exercising sporadically. February and March were really tough for me with fatigue. I had a surgery in November and it took me months to recover. I recovered from the surgery but it made my MS symptoms worse. I gained 20lbs :-( I will get back to where I was though. I was in a size 14 jeans and they were too loose for me but now I am almost an 18 again. I refuse to be that size and will be back to a 12!

1-6-13 Walked 2 Miles 40 mins
1-7-13 Water Aerobics 25 mins
1-2713 Walked 1.5 30 mins
1-28-13 Swimming 50 mins

2-17-13 walked 3 miles- 60 mins

3-4-13 Biked for 30 mins (3 miles)

3-29-13 Biked for 30 mins

3-30-13 Biked for 40 mins

During the month of March I was sick quite often. I was only able to exercise about 11 of the days. Most days I walked.

I had to cut back on my exercising in the month of February but still managed to do 3 or 4 times per week. I'm feeling better so I'll keep my exercising the same!

I am motivated to do better during February than I did in January. However, I will be gone on vacation for about a week and a half during February, so will likely take a break during that part of the month weeks 3 and 4). That's more reason to work harder during week 1 and week 2!

My February exercise
Week 1 - Jan 31 - Feb 6
Th - 6143 steps
F - 30 minutes Curves, following by stretching; 5567 steps
S - Zumba class (participated for 15 min; marched in place for 10 minutes; followed by stretching); __________ steps
S -
M -

We do our mental breaks!! I don't really have a goal because every time I have a goal I never reach it and get so discouraged. Now I am telling myself I should try ot exercise every day that I can and if I feel up to it. I found that thinking this way has been helping me. If I don't exercise, I no longer beat myself up over it. After seeing how many days I exercised last month I will continue to think this way because it seems to be working for me, at least for now. I exercised 24 out of 31 days in January which is huge for me and a first. I noticed some of my MS symptoms got a bit worse so I've been doing a little less each day to see if I feel better.

January 2013 exercise. I exercised regularly, so I'm not beating myself up over not making my goal all month. Most weeks, I was close, and, between August and December, I usually made my goal. Sometimes (I've decided), I just need a "mental health" break from exercising, so I've given myself permission to take those.

Good to see you posting, Kat, and it's so good that you're doing yoga.

Yoga is supposed to be so good for MS. I used to do some, but, I just feel like I'm busy enough, and am already paying for Curves. Too many exercise programs just get too expensive. Curves is currently offering a Zumba class 2x a week for only $1 per class for members. (I go 2-3x a month, when it works into my schedule.) Wouldn't it be cool if they'd ever consider adding a yoga class? I might have to ask them about that. But, I think the Zumba class is done by a relative of one of the owners.

The physical labor that you did in your garage was also a good workout. I don't do very well with physical labor. It often involves bending down and standing up kinds of motions, and they tire me just immediately. An MS-tired unlike anything I've ever experienced. Maybe it has something to do with where my lesions are located?

I find that posting regularly, about things like exercising or diet or whatever, helps me to be accountable to myself because I feel accountable to others. It can be a great tool for keeping yourself on track.

I'll post my exercise on Friday, when I begin again. After my daughter leaves for home.

Today I started doing yoga. It was my first time other than once or twice with my daughter in a mother/daughter class where I spent more time watching her than doing anything! I did an AM yoga routine and a beginners yoga routine for a total of 40 minutes. Then I stacked wood in our garage for 30 minutes. That is the most exercise I have gotten in a long time and hope to keep at it every day. Maybe not so much every day but doing something every day.

I've been taking mostly a planned break from exercise while my daughter is here visiting over the holidays. Although I went to Curves once, and have done Wii Fit 2 or 3 times since she has been home, I have not stuck to my 3x per week Curves schedule.

Will plan to start up again on Friday.
