I used diced apples and the last little bits in the applesauce jar, oatmeal and some dried apricots and nuts, honey, cinnamon and a little melted butter I had on hand to make granola. It keep for weeks in a jar, great for breakfast with yogurt or milk or a crunchy sweet snack.
I used up free tomatoes from the garden and the tops of the green onions sautéed in butter, I got on sale and cottage cheese in a crust less quiche.
If you use some garlic, smoked paprika and creole seasoning from the dollar store it really spices up the inexpensive ingredients and make it special.
Put it in the oven together to save on gas baking it.

I've been going to something called a Movable Market. For $10 you get upwards to 60 pounds of fresh veggies. It's all fresh and in season. Check in your area and see if there is something like this. There is no income issues....they even have it in the high rent districts here. It's worth getting up early. Some people get enough that they are canning their tomatoes.
My sister and I get enough that sometimes we go every other week.

To check out what I am talking about go to WWW.the3000club.org and see if there is something like this in your state. It's get.

My sister and I went to Mega Dollar yesterday and got got cherry tomatoes and blueberries for 99 cents a pint. Don't think they're in season in the USA, but it was a great deal and they both tasted great.

Oh, yea, and got a small bag of those wonderfully tasty and expensive fingerling potatoes for the 99 cents...also.

In AU its cherry season which makes a great Christmas fruit. On the radio thy are talking about the foreign workers who pick the crop. We get cherries from USA in July which means 2 seasons. The price and quality for both the imported and local fruit is about the same.

I'm blessed to live in an area where there is a farmer's market every single day of the week somewhere in my county. Last summer every time I bought berries, I bought double and froze half - no additives. They are delicious and have lasted all winter. I must admit, I don't just eat them. I bake with them, add them to dishes, spoon them into Greek yogurt. They're not quite as firm as fresh, but if you crave berries, they're the healthy local alternative to buying stuff imported from thousands of miles away.

In a northern climate, it is hard to get local fresh produce year round. i have a small chest freezer and i froze some stuff my garden. i canned my own marinera sauce. I think as i do it more often i'll get better at it. although i have debated on moving to a climate where i can grow more year round

My niece buys a weekly basket of fresh veggies/fruits from a community org. that just sells from local farmers. It's $15. Wow, the basket was just over flowing with fresh produce. It was too much for a single person. I would investigate local programs---it was just wonderful. Well worth the weekly $15. emoticon emoticon

People in my area often shop the thrift stores, etc., in a city near Indianapolis where there are a lot of high price homes, etc. You can occasionally find a treasure or two.

My Sister and I hit the second hand stores yesterday. Sis is a big purse hound. Anyway, she found a Prada purse for $7.00. I got a red Kenneth Cole for $4.99. On the internet it sells for 150. It's in mint condition. I feel so blessed. I usually don't even carry a purse!!! Just keep treasure hunting---they're out there.

Wow.
It is hard for me to imagine all those options.
That must be really fun.

When our farmer's market is open - in season - some of the people with different ethnic backgrounds get excited over some items not available in the grocery like young eggplant. They cannot find herbs they are accustomed to in the area. I assume that someplace like Chicago might have shops as you describe, but you would have to know where you are going.

I get those prices by shopping the cultural stores--like Arabic, Indian, Asian or Mexican. We even have an Eastern European Store. You just have to be adventurous. My sister and I consider it a hobby, looking through different markets and stores. Lots of things are expensive, but there are some treasures to be found. We laugh and consider it like a trip or adventure.

Wow. Your price of saffron is really good. Garlic powder costs that much here. I considered saffron unaffordable. Thought it would be over $20 an ounce. Perhaps I am wrong. There is a grocery where chefs shop in Fort Wayne. They might have something like that.

I bought blueberries yesterday. I got four pints for $ 8 which is about half the price of frozen. They were imported from central America, but I think they are worth it. I am going to freeze most of them.

Tx for doing that. I know that it's hard for folks in some parts of the country to always get fresh. And, it they can it's expensive. I started out growing my herbs in the house. I live in the southwest, where we can get lots of fresh produce year round---mostly at a reasonable price. I go to the Mexican markets for my peppers and onions; and the Arab market for spices. I got a baggy of saffron for $1.99 last month. Check out all the different kinds of markets in your area and see if there are some kind of deals to help out.
I am almost embarrassed to tell you how many different kinds of markets my sister and I frequent in a month's time. It's kind of a hobby of ours. It's a fun way of learning and getting new ideas. And, sometimes we find a great deal. emoticon

P.S. I know some of you live in remote areas where there are no markets or unique shopping areas. But, for those of you who do live in areas where there are some different markets-- try them. It's a fun way to spend time without spending much money

I couldn't get to the eating well guide.

The only things that are fresh and local here are apples.
So, I buy a lot of frozen & am still eating frozen from last summers CSA farm.
I am going to try to grow some lettuce indoors, but can't grow the quantity we eat.

Good luck to those of you who live where you can buy really fresh food.

grapefruit down to 33cents each compared to 99 cents for an orange - all the citrus is delicious at this time of year.

Salad makings seem a requirement regardless of season - anyone successfully grow their own sprouts, yogart, kefir, sourdough starter???

Decided I am only shopping in season and creating my menus around this concept. I've been checking the sale ads for what's on the list--and found these items are what's on sale and freshest. Here are a couple of websites I found to help. Of course, they advocate shopping farmer's markets--I don't and the better product/cheaper price still holds true.

All of these sites have lists for seasonal produce
