I wonder if town can call itself a city whenever it wants?
For example, the town to the north of me is The Village of Los Lunas...population12,000.
I live in The City of Belen...population 8000.
Maybe the city fathers here are more optomistic!

I grew up on a farm outside our town of 700 people. My DH grew up, also on a farm, near a town of 270 people. We moved "up" to 25,000 current residents (and growing).

Crawford, Nebraska, 1100 people except for this weekend, when we swell to around 20000, as everyone with family connections here tries to return for our Fourth of July celebration, bringing wives (or husbands) and kids. Lots of horses show up as well, for rodeo and ride the ridge. The rest of the year, we are a quiet village calling itself a city. emoticon

Until we moved to Granisle we lived in the city of Prince George,BC (Canada) population about 80,000 and it lives up to its title with all the shopping, interesting things to do and crime galore. It was exciting and I look forward to returning every once in a while from here population 300(definitely a village).

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The population here is just over 1,300,000. It's a pretty big city. It's quite spread out, however, so it doesn't seem overly populated.

Wow! I'm quite impressed at the number of smaller towns/cities out there. For those of you in small small towns (500 or less), do you know just about everyone there??

That's like a big family get-together every day. It sounds exciting to me.

Oh, and the population of Montpelier, VT in 2009 was 7,705. I've been told that is the smallest state capital in the US. They are small but proud.

(All my figures in this post and the last post came from the same web site for consistency.)

I live in a town, not a city. I've been told that, at least around here, a town or city is determined by its charter, not its size. The next town over changed its charter several years ago to become a city, but it still officially calls itself a town (figure that one out!).

Anyway, the population of my town in 2009, according to one web site, was 8,175. This is considered a small town. (The town in which I grew up had a population of 118 in 2009.)

The population of the city-town next door was 13,768 in 2007.

Today I was told that my little town of Ridgecrest CA is not a city because it is too small. The population is 25,852 (according to Google). That also got me curious about who lives in the biggest and smallest of cities.

How big or small is your city?
