Well, he's not as active as I am but it would be a bit OUTRAGEOUS to suggest that he's unfit. Actually, he has slimmed down quite a lot recently and he is POSITIVELY beavering around the house at the moment. We're planning to put it up for sale in 7 weeks .... so there is plenty to do!

The story in Duchess was wonderful, full of soap opera-y moments, but the best part was the beautiful dishes and dinners she made. They were absolutely gorgeous. Check out your local BIBLIOTECA to see if they have a copy. I know our libraries carry it on VCR. Don't know how it works on your side.

I had to pop back in for "Z". Alas, my ZEALOUSNESS was waning for the U/D version revised. Didn't have the same excitement somehow. Another old favorite was Duchess of Duke Street. I even have that one on DVD.

Sorry I've been MIA this last week. Pouting again. Went to my Dr. to discuss my latest bloodwork and it was not great. All those med's I got off of when I'd lost weight I now have to start taking again until I get some of this weight back off again. Can't expect to throw out the rule book and reap no consequences. I think it might have been the exact kick in the pants I needed.

Tee hee. Ah yes, the original Upstairs Downstairs series of YESTERYEAR. But I was a child when that series was first aired ...

They did make a follow-up, which had Jean Marsh as the housekeeper. But I wasn't sure I liked it really. Did it reach America ever?

The video was cute and I have to say I pretty much agreed with him about season 2. Some of the plot points were EXCRUCIATINGLY bizarre at times. However, I'm finding season 3 quite enjoyable. Of course, it's no Upstairs/Downstairs, but it will have to do until something better comes along.

Actually I haven't watched Downton for ages - I've got about 6 episodes to catch up on! My enthusiasm has waned as the series progressed ... and it's not even because I've caught a glimpse of something tasteless like a bunch of WORKHOUSES for example. This sums it up for me www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/vid

Give him a whirl. He's cute. And funny. I do love period drama - but this is a bit more soap than I can quite get to grips with.

I double checked my alphabet cheat sheet and we are indeed on letter V, so I am VICTORIOUSLY making my entry with the correct letter. Had a really lazy weekend, just reading and watching some of my favorite shows on Sunday (Walking Dead and Once Upon A Time). Do you watch Downton Abbey? I really like that show. I'm a sucker for Victorian period dramas.

I have TREMENDOUS respect for all those people who can cruise through the alphabet with not thought. It is something I struggle with daily. Tee hee, we seem to be going backwards through the alphabet. But since this thread appears at the moment to belong to you and I, I shall SURREPTITIOUSLY collaborate and hang around R and S with you. They are much easier to deal with than the tail end of the alphabet, towards which we are heading ...

Totally agree with your comments BTW.

I know. Some of these diets get a little RIDICULOUS and I think sometimes people think the more difficult a diet is to adhere to, the more effective it is. Almost like we need to punish ourselves for enjoying food so much. They say that the greatest sex organ is the brain. Well, it is also the biggest weight determiner (is that a word?) I'm discovering that my thought process really determines my success or failure in the weight loss department. So, it's more about changing my thought process than my eating habits. Only with the first will I be able to conquer the second.

My problem with a vegetarian diet, let alone vegan, is that it is STUPENDOUSLY difficult to eat enough protein without resorting to stuff that, frankly, is so dull to eat that I lose the will to live. We don't eat a great deal of meat - and very little red meat indeed - but I find I have to include 2 or 3 ounces a day to make sure we're balanced. The alternative is to eat cheese - but it's way too high in fat (and no use if you're Vegan either of course) or eggs, which are great protein but again you can have too many. I hear people on Spark talking about low-fat cheese. Yes well. I'm sorry to say that no-one in Europe would go that way. Honest. Not Europeans with taste buds anyhow - and of course we have *real* cheese over here emoticon

I'll never forget the shock of discovering, when I lived in the US, that all these enticingly-named cheeses like "Monterey Jack" and "Swiss" and so on were ... ahem ... what we call "processed cheese" with either white, orange or yellow colouring technology. Very upsetting!

But back to the plot. A small amount of lean meat, chicken and fish together with a sensible amount of dairy does it for me. My teeth tell me I'm an omnivore, not a herbivore. I'm comfortable with that.

Thanks for the tip. I will check her out. I'm trying to figure out a sentence in which to use RASTAFARIAN and I discovered there is actually a Rastafarian diet. It is a vegan diet that includes fish. I tried vegan for awhile and just couldn't do it. Have limited my red meat intake to 1 to 2 times a month and eat a lot more veggies and fruits than I used to.

Sounds right up my street - as you know I'm a sucker for a good crime novel. Like most of the population these days it seems. Actually I've read a lot over the last couple of days - I have the most dreadful head cold so am sitting in self-imposed QUARANTINE and reading a lot of the time. Have just finished Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, the follow-up to Wolf Hall. Both won the Man Booker Prize for fiction over here - absolutely mesmerising fictionalised biography of Thomas Cromwell in three parts (third to come). Riveting stuff, a literary tour de force, and two of the most enjoyable books I've read in years.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Today I shall begin a Dana Stabenow novel. She writes with a backdrop of Alaska. Her characters are off kilter and quite funny at times though not a PREPONDERANCE of humor, just the right flavoring. Heroine is Kate Shugak, part native american privite investigator who's a real treat. Check her out.

What great news about your medications! Having all the positive effects does not NECESSARILY bring about the proper response. I know all the great benefits as I have been a zumba and water aerobics enthusiast in the past and I felt great. Just need to get up off my bum and get started.

Well, I go in fits and starts with regard to strength training, but I'm pretty good nowadays on just going for a walk every day. I try to do 40 minutes, but if I really can't face the boredom I at least go round the park for about 20 minutes and I do it as fast as I can.

The results are just unarguable. Topically, yesterday I was trying to find stuff to throw away as it's our 2-weekly collection this morning. Went to the medicine cabinet to put some stuff away and cleared out half a shelf of various MEDICATIONS for depression. MIRACULOUSLY I appear to require nothing nowadays. And they didn't work any way. Just made me feel worse. Goodbye to all that!

Unfortunately, I've become rather LACKADAISICAL regarding my exercise, much to my detriment. I know when I'm exercising regularly I feel much better and have more energy, but just getting started is my problem at the moment. I am the world's worst procrastinator.

Well, I find I'm ambivalent about it. I don't like exercising much, but I find if I don't do something for a couple of days I feel dreadful. Sluggish, tired, miserable ... so it seems there's no alternative to KILOMETRES of walking ...

Rather a JUXTAPOSITION to those diehards who are like energizer bunnies and exercise day in and day out. I need to get to the point where exercise isn't equivalent to evil.

Very hard to keep up the momentum without a partner, especially when the weather gets colder and the outside is less inviting. I find my consistency is impacted IMMEDIATELY when I have to do it alone ...

Is HOLIDAISICAL a word? It sounds like a word, meaning in the holiday spirit. Oh well, I like it whether it's a word or not.
Glad to hear about your neighbor. Always so much more enjoyable to have a friend along on your walk. I need to find one too.

FELICITATIONS! FRANTICALLY running around this weekend with my daughter. Went to a flea market and a craft show. Had lots of fun. Finally turned a little cold, but as my AC doesn't work neither does my heater. Will be in the 40's at night for the next few nights.

I find that a great majority of my conversations center around the DELICIOUSNESS of certain foods, or just food in general. Could be part of my problem. If I could just CONCENTRATE more on the cooking and less on the consuming.

Aha, well if you like curry then the Patak's range is definitely worth seeking out on the internet. And, ahem, not CHALLENGING to prepare, if you get my meaning emoticon

I can state CATEGORICALLY that they make a great basis for your own style of curry, and biryani-style dishes are some of my favourites. I major on the vegetables and include a small amount of chicken or similar just to oomph the protein content a little.

I'm a big fan of Thai curry too ...

BALDERDASH, Miso. Anything involving the stove AND the oven definitely qualifies as cooking. I will check out that spice. I love curry and make a vegetable curry quite often. There is also a nice little Thai curry place my daughter and I are eating at tonight.

Your use of the word "recipe" has made me feel quite APOLOGETIC. Ahem. This is akin to ANNOUNCING that I am a candidate for the Idle Houseperson of the Year Award.

I think Patak's is a UK company of Indian origin. They make a range of spices and pastes which you use as a basis for home-made curries and other Indian dishes (trad. Asian cookery but obviously adapted to the British palate. So not AUTHENTICALLY Indian in the traditional sense, but absolutely bang on in terms of the UK national dish. Which is curry, of course.)

Here's their web site and a link to their biryani paste. I wouldn't be surprised if someone imports their stuff to the USA, I used to be able to get stuff like this occasionally when I lived in CT. http://www.pataks.co.uk/products/biryani-p
aste.aspx

The ... ahem ... "recipe" is as follows:

Chop an onion and fry it in as little olive oil as you can get away with (certainly 1tbsp MAX) till it's getting brown, really good fried onion flavour

then add about 3/4 of a bag of defrosted Sainsbury's chargrilled mediterranean vegetables (courgette, aubergine, red & yellow peppers) and fry a bit more so some of the onions are just starting to blacken.

Add 150g of basmati rice, uncooked, and one jar of Patak's biryani sauce plus about 90ml of water (or make your own sauce with Patak's paste and, say, a can of crushed tomatoes) and stir the whole lot around until it comes to the boil

Add 150g cooked chicken, stir again, transfer to an oven-proof dish and place in oven at 180 C for about 35 minutes or so. Stir every now and then so the rice on top doesn't crisp and all the grains absorb some liquid.

This makes 2-3 servings of a dryish, flavoursome curry. 3 servings of 440 calories or 2 servings of 660, depending on how hungry you are and whether you are dieting or maintaining. Very filling. Very easy. ABSOLUTELY yummy.

Not really ... ahem ... cooking.

Send me the recipe. I've never heard of it, but sounds promising. Chili came out terrific, only have a couple of bowls left after family devoured it. "Z" is a killer. ZOOLOGICAL impairment or something.

Right now juggling finances. TECHNICALLY, I have enough money for all my normal expenses plus some. But I have the extra expense of getting my blower motor on AC fixed ($600) and a trip to Oregon in Dec, another $600. Plus paying someone to paint. One step at a time.

REALISTICALLY speaking, I am just clueless about how to get this house ready to sell. I hope to put it up for sell in Jan or Feb, but I plan to clear it out first. Nothing RIDICULOUSLY wrong to be repaired, but several minor ones. Overwhelming for my one tracked brain.

Funnily enough I've never read a Dick Francis. Not sure why I've been NEGLECTING him, except I have a vague idea that he writes about horses and those are not the sort of NARRATIVES that enthuse me. I know he has a long reputation for telling a good tale though. I ought to give him a try really.

Currently we have regular new Scandinavian crime thrillers arriving in the local library. I don't know what it is about those NORTHERNERS, but they don't half write some grisly tales!

I tend to read MISCELLANEOUSLY odd titles, but I too enjoy thrillers and mysteries. One of my very favorites is Dick Francis, who unfortunately has died recently. He writes such wonderful characters. He is one of the few authors I read again and again.

No, I haven't read that one. It would be tempting to claim (based on that) that I am LAMENTABLY poorly-read. But it's not true. Well, not with regard to the classics, anyway. Oh, and crime thrillers/detective stories. I like those, too

Ah yes. There is no surer way to JEOPARDISE my weight loss progress than to skip tracking some of my meals. I am very good at tracking breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. When I start to get sloppy, it's the food consumed after 7pm that I'm sort of eyeballing and reckoning it's "about right". There's no JUSTIFICATION for this - especially when the evidence suggests that it is very much NOT "about right".

Often we overlook the INCONSEQUENTIAL elements of our lives as sources of pleasure and steps to success. Always looking for the big, grandiose gestures and actions for the giant leap forward rather than the small but consistent steps that move us along at a slow but steady speed. The very act of tracking my food which is so boring works wonders with my progress as I have again discovered this week.

Yes. I have to make myself look at things positively. It's just too DISPIRITING otherwise - and DESTRUCTIVE habits are all too easy to slip into unfortunately.

I am not going to be 2.5 stones overweight any more. Period.

I am quite tired of the CURMUDGEON attitude I have towards my life. It's time to embrace the wonder that is me.

Where are all the logophiles? No postings since I took a misguided sabbatical. Shall we test the waters with the letter "A" as in ALTERNATIVE, lifestyle or otherwise.

Yes, I'm worried about Still too, this seems so unlike her emoticon
I think YEARNINGLY of the exchanges we had on this thread. Her ZEALOUSNESS for wordplay was an inspiration.

Totally understandable. I can't imagine Still VOLUNTARILY disappearing from this thread and Spark. Even more WORRYINGLY, she left without a word. Not even a short word, let alone one with 10 letters emoticon

She did say she was planning to move home and it can be EXasperatingly difficult to get internet etc up and running in a new place sometimes. So perhaps that's it?

You're right, we can easily keep this going.
Unless we've OVERLOOKED something important
and that would be PREPOSTEROUS
because the task is QUANTIFIABLE
so REALISTICALLY we cannot fail!

Hi again Haileysmemaw - didn't recognise you in your new ID emoticon
