Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it's a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they're terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Yep-that's it. Use one that has a big enough circle to just surround the hazelnut.

Never mind, I found it

I just copied and pasted your description into Google and voila!
It's a tool for auto mechanics--I was thinking of other kinds of wrenches and just couldn't place it in my brain...lol

sounds like a pretty neat trick Sasha. Now I just have to try to figure out what tool that is. Can you find a picture of it on a website somewhere and then post the web address?

I've discovered a quick and neat way to shell hazelnuts. I put them in a pile on the workbench, then use a wrench that has a closed circle on one end and is open on the other end-not sure what it's called. I lasso one nut at a time with the closed end and slide the nut front and center, then whack it with a hammer. The closed end of the wrench holds the nut in place (instead of your fingers) and also controls the shrapnel from the shattering nutshell. I just keep bringing in nuts and cracking them one at a time until I have a fairly big pile, then scoop them into a bag to bring upstairs and pick out the meats later.
