Share 1 fiber-filled food you plan to eat at lunch today, such as whole-grain bread, fruit, or beans.

How to do it
Do you eat your sandwich on whole-grain bread? Is a piece of fruit always on hand for a sweet, post-lunch treat? Do you sink your teeth into a big salad or dig into beans and brown rice? Whatever adds fiber to your mid-day meal, share it here.

Why it matters
With so many tasty choices available, it's easy to fit fiber into your lunch! Fiber helps fill you up and is digested slowly, meaning you'll have long-term energy to get you through the rest of your day. By sharing your favorite source of lunchtime fiber, you may inspire someone to try something new.

Take a minute to bring some balance:

Stand, shift your weight to the right and lift your left leg for 30 seconds, then switch sides.

How to do it
Stand up straight with your feet hip-width apart. Your weight should be equally balanced on both sides of your body. Shift your weight to your right side and lift your left foot off the ground. Hold for 30 seconds or until you feel too wobbly to stay in the position. Repeat on the other side, shifting your weight to the left and lifting your right foot for up to 30 seconds.

Why it matters
As we age, our sense of balance becomes weaker, which can lead to a feeling of unsteadiness and increase the risk of falls. By taking a moment for this challenge, you can help to rebuild and enhance your sense of balance.

Eat 1 plant-based protein, such as black beans, whole grain bread, quinoa, oatmeal, or almonds.

How to do it
Today, eat one plant-based protein at a meal or for a snack. Go for some oatmeal at breakfast, or have a small handful of almonds or peanuts as a morning snack. Try a bean or lentil soup at lunch along with a slice of whole-grain bread. Or make a side like couscous, quinoa, or whole grain rice at dinner.

Why it matters
Although many of us may think of protein as a nutrient that comes from meat or eggs, a lot of plant-based foods pack a protein punch! Not only that, plant-based protein doesn't contain the unhealthy saturated fat that meat can. Better still, foods like beans, lentils, and whole grains are full of fiber.

I walked at the Botanical Garden. It is such a beautiful and enchanting environment to walk and enjoy nature at the same time! It's fun to spot all the little hidden statues and planters they have within the garden.

Take a walk and take a closer look at the trees.

How to do it
Go for a walk and really take time to focus on the trees along your route. Take note of the trunks and branches, and their different colors and textures. Notice the various shapes of the leaves, whether or not they have any flowers blooming, or if they have seed pods. Do they have any critters climbing their branches or buzzing in their foliage?

Why it matters
Spending time with trees means you're getting up and out, and walking is a great way to improve heart health, strengthen muscles, and lower your risk of certain diseases. And studying trees' many interesting features may motivate you to walk farther! Even though we see trees every day, we may take them for granted and not notice them. But they are an important part of our environment and can enrich your walk. They can also help to make you more mindful of your surroundings and help connect you to nature.

Go Green in your Kitchen:

Share 1 thing you do to make your kitchen earth-friendly.

How to do it
Share one thing that you do in your kitchen to keep it earth-friendly. Do you use cloth napkins instead of paper ones, or fabric dish towels in lieu of paper towels? Do you save water by turning off the tap when you scrub your dishes, compost and/or recycle, or find new uses for plastic supermarket shopping bags? Whatever you do, share it here.

Why it matters
The kitchen is one room in the house where we use several different types of our earth's resources (often all at once!). Thinking about how you already conserve resources may encourage you to do even more - or inspire others to make their own kitchens greener.

Eat 1 food today that helps to protect your teeth, such as nuts, milk, or crunchy produce.

How to do it
Eat one food today that can help keep your teeth in tip-top shape. The best choices include crunchy, firm, non-citrus fruits and veggies; milk and cheese; lean meats; and nuts.

Why it matters
Every time we eat, we expose our teeth to potential decay - and some foods are better than others at treating them right. Firm and crunchy produce contains a lot of water, which helps to immediately dilute the food's natural sugars. Fruits and veggies also prompt you to make more saliva, which further helps to wash away bits of food. Milk, cheese, lean meat, and nuts are believed to help put the minerals calcium and phosphorous back into tooth enamel.

What I Want To Do In Next Twelve Months:

Lose weight.
Get rid of belly fat.
Wear 16 regular size pants.
Create "My Space" sanctuary.
More friend time.
More parties.
Purge Junk!
Buy new Lazy Boy chairs.
Take a mini vacation.
Create another vision collage.
Save money. (Stress Less)
Look good at son's college graduation.
See great movies.
Dance.
Do something daring.
Play Bingo.
Learn how to stir fry.
Laugh uncontrollably.
Play more games.
Finish a craft project.
Look at Christmas Lights.
Make a new friend or connect with old ones.
Volunteer.

My number one would be to wear size 16 regular pants. These are the steps I can take to make it happen:

1. Stay within calorie range.
2. Exercise regularly.
3. Learn about ways to reduce belly fat.
4. Be consistent.
5. Eat on a smaller plate to Go Down A Size. Thanks Laura! emoticon

Go Down a Size:

Use a smaller plate for your largest meal of the day.

How to do it
Reach for a smaller plate when you get ready to eat your largest meal of the day. Ideally, the diameter (or distance across) the plate should be 10 inches (25 cm) or less. Most dinner plates are 12 inches (30 cm) or more across. If you are buying prepared food for your largest meal, go for the smallest size.

Why it matters
Larger dinner plates mean bigger servings of food! We tend to eat all of what is on our plates, whether we are really hungry for it or not. By switching to a smaller plate, you may find that you're just as satisfied - but with less food.

I was ahead of myself on this one. I created 3 lists at the beginning of the month -- work, home and self. I was doing fairly well in keeping a daily to do list for each but got sidetracked when I traveled last week. So my goal is to re-visit those lists tonight and get back to my daily to do lists.

emoticon idea Leah. I love this idea and today I am sitting down and doing it. I have decided to break it down into 3 areas of my life that needs concentrating on. Weight loss, spirituality and getting my house organized. Organizational wise my list is completed on what needs to be done in every room in my house. I'm taking one room at a time and doing 1 item in each room per day until it's completely clean & organized. It may take me until the end of the year to accomplish this goal, but just knowing it's done will lift a weight off my shoulders. Spirituality wise I've decided to take 10 minutes every morning to read my scriptures, make sure I say my morning & evening prayers. Weight loss is my #1 thing. I need to sit down and write out my plan on how I am going to achieve it. This is today's must do chore. So a year from now I plan to be down at least 90 pounds. I WILL DO IT, I am determined this time around & I will not cave into the I CAN'T DO THIS pitfall.

Write a wish list for the next 12 months, and circle the top thing you'd like to achieve.

How to do it
Spend a minute making an uncensored list of everything you want in your life for the next year. On the list, include your desires for your health, money, relationships, career, and hobbies. Circle the number-one thing you'd like to achieve, and ask yourself the steps it would take to make it a reality.

Why it matters
Thinking about how you'd like your year to go helps you clarify your goals. And though making goals is a good start to achieving your dreams, research shows that identifying the concrete, measurable actions you need to take is even more powerful. By thinking about what it would take to make your number-one wish come true, it begins to move it from wish to reality.

Take 5 minutes to clean the knobs and handles on your kitchen cabinets and drawers.

How to do it
Take five minutes to get the grime off! Use a kitchen cleaner and rag to give a good cleaning of the knobs and handles on your kitchen cabinets and drawers. If you don't have time to do them all, focus on the ones closest to your stove and refrigerator.

Why it matters
When you think about how much you touch the knobs and handles in your kitchen, it's easy to see how they become magnets for dirt and a breeding ground for germs. Combine that with handling food, and it's good motivation to give them a quick cleaning. Bonus: Cleaner-looking hardware will give your kitchen a little lift.

Love the hunger advice! I've been trying to eat when I'm actually hungry...(tummy growl).

Did the circles - going to add that to my physical therapy exercises!

Give yourself a leg up!

Draw 10 imaginary circles with your right leg, then switch and draw 10 with your left leg.

How to do it
Stand up straight and hold on to the back of a chair for balance. Slightly bend your right knee and lift your left leg out straight and to the side, at no more than a 45-degree angle to your body. Point your toes, imagine your big toe is a pen, and draw 5 small circles by moving your whole leg. Reverse circle directions and draw 5 more small circles. Change legs and perform the same routine.

Why it matters
Our hip muscles are connected to the muscles of the back, abdomen, legs, and backside. They're also susceptible to wear and tear, so it's important to work those hips. Drawing imaginary circles with your leg strengthens your hips and knees, and your thighs feel the burn, too!

Ask yourself if you're hungry the next time you get ready to eat a sweet or salty snack.

How to do it
The next time you sit down to eat a snack that's high in salt, sugar, or fat (or some combination of these), stop for a moment. Ask yourself if you're eating it because you feel hungry, or if you're eating it because you feel stressed, bored, or sad.

Why it matters
We use food to fill our stomachs when we're hungry, but sometimes we may also use it to deal with our feelings. The problem with emotional eating is that people rarely reach for healthy foods - instead, it's usually foods like ice cream, potato chips, and candy that take center stage. By thinking before biting into that snack, you may realize that you aren't hungry and are eating as a way to handle a feeling. This might prompt you to do something else, like go for a quick walk or share your feelings with a friend or co-worker.

Relax your facial muscles by keeping your face still and the muscles loose.

How to do it
Once today, stop what you are doing and consciously relax all the muscles in your face. Count to five and breathe deeply as you concentrate on keeping your face still and the muscles loose. (Set a timer on your computer, clock, or kitchen stove if you need a reminder.)

Why it matters
The daily stresses of the day cause many people to clench and grind their jaw without even realizing it. This can put pressure on the muscles and tissues of the lower portion of your face, and may lead to muscle aches or chronic pain. And although a furrowed brow may make you look brainy, it can cause tension headaches.

Take a 5-minute gratitude walk: Stroll outside or in your home and note what you're thankful for.

How to do it
Set aside a minimum of five minutes for taking a walk outdoors or in your home or workplace. As you walk, spend the time focusing on the things you see that you feel grateful for. Perhaps you're grateful for the beautiful flowers growing in a nearby park, a refrigerator full of food in your home, or a kind neighbor on your street. Maybe you feel grateful for a clean, safe place to work or a helpful colleague. Try to stay in the moment and concentrate on your feelings of gratitude until the walk is over.

Why it matters
We tend to see the same things day after day, taking people and objects in our lives for granted. But when we stop and really study everything around us, we often recognize that there is a lot to be grateful for. Taking a gratitude walk in your everyday environment can give you a lasting emotional health boost.

Great Advice! We go 4x a year! When we are finished with our "cleaning and check up" we AUTOMATICALLY schedule our next appointment! It goes on the calendar, and we keep that date open for it!

Having your teeth cleaned, and checked, is very important. Plaque buildup on your teeth, continues into our bodies, so a good checkup and clean teeth, equals "Heart Healthy Maintenance."

Take time for your teeth:

Check to see if you are up to date on having your teeth cleaned.

How to do it
When's the last time you had your teeth cleaned? If you can't remember, check your calendar or call your dentist, because it may be that time! If that's the case, plan to make an appointment. And if you already have a dental check-up scheduled or had your teeth cleaned recently, congratulations - you are done!

Why it matters
Dental check-ups and cleanings are an important part of good oral hygiene, but they tend to get lost in the fray of hectic work and family schedules. Going to the dentist can help prevent cavities, tooth loss, and also catch early signs of gum disease.

Stretch hamstrings and calves with 8 runner's lunges.

How to do it
Stand about one foot (30 cm) from a wall and place your palms flat against it. Step back with your left foot. Bend your right knee while keeping your left heel down against the floor, and hold for a count of 10. Change sides and repeat the stretch with your right foot behind you. Repeat three more times on each side, alternating which leg is in front.

Why it matters
You don't have to be a runner to benefit from these lunges, which stretch both the calves and hamstrings. Stretching these muscles can help to prevent aches, stiffness, and injury.

Brenda, I'm with you! Our cards get either points or $$$$$! If you are going to use them, why not, get something! Plus, like you we pay in full...no interest. But I have to tell you a little story....

My grandparents, and my mother, both used this line...."DON'T SPEND TWENTY DOLLARS, WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE TWO!" Lord knows, those words resonate with each large purchase. We live, and still buy, what we want, so we make "the charge cards work for us, whenever possible."

Finger challenge done (felt good!)
emoticon

Wallet challenge done - cleaned out! I only keep 2 major credit cards, my Kohl's card, and my debit card....the rest are away. I charge everything (even groceries and gas) on my Visa credit cards to earn "Points" - and pay it off each month. I have a Princess Cruise Visa (it pays back $$ on my bill and I earn double points when it's a cruise), and a Capital One/Venture Visa that earns 1-1/4 points (I earn $$ and turn them in as gift cards to Target, etc) I might as well get something back for everything I buy since I pay it off each month - no interest! It's money in the bank for me - same as using a check or debit card. Of course, when I buy something at Kohl's I use their card (and pay it off) because I keep getting $10 coupons sent to me! LOL It's a trap!!

Wrangle your wallet:

Get better control of your money by spending 5 minutes organizing your wallet.

How to do it
Take out your wallet and empty everything out. Throw away any old receipts, ticket stubs, expired coupons, and other old scraps of paper you no longer need. Put your paper money into a tidy pile and place it back in the wallet. Then go through your credit cards and think about which ones really need to be with you at all times, and which can stay home. Put the ones you need back in the wallet, and store the others in a safe place in your home.

Why it matters
Getting control of your money starts with the stuff you carry with you every day! A well-organized wallet that's free of excess bits of paper lets you see exactly what's in there, so you know what you have to spend at any given time. And a wallet that's lighter on credit cards (especially store cards, which typically apply gigantic interest rates) will make you less tempted to use them.

Free Your Fingers

Hold your right hand flat and slowly lift each finger 1 at a time, and repeat with the left hand.

How to do it
Place your right hand on a flat surface with fingers spread slightly and your palm fully touching the surface. Gently lift and lower your thumb and each finger, one at a time. Repeat four more times, and then do the same exercise with your left hand. If you like, you can finish by lifting the thumbs and fingers on both hands all at once.

Why it matters
This simple exercise helps to increase the range of motion and flexibility of your fingers (those ring fingers were a challenge, weren't they?). While good for anyone, these gentle stretches are especially useful for those with osteoarthritis in their hands.

Oooh, love the salad in a jar!

one thing that helps me is the *subway* concept, putting the same thing in a container, so I can mix & match as desired (think subway counter where you pull what you want for sammies) Really makes me want a freggie fridge... with freezer on bottom, French double doors! freggies take up space, eh? In my upright with freezer on top, the freggie bins are on the bottom, drives me nuts!

I did not cut up veggies for today, but I ate a TON! Yesterday, I made a "VEGGIE, PASTA BAKE!"

Summer Squash, Zucchini, Cauliflower, adding 1 can of tomatoes. Seasonings to taste. Whole Wheat Pasta, adding fat free cottage cheese, parm, & mozzarella (reduced, fat free, AND Regular 1/3 each) placed all into a baking dish. Tented with foil. Bake 350 degrees 40-45 minutes. YUM!

Here's another HINT! I made this into 6 LARGE servings, so very filling. But, when I add PASTA, I add equal or NEARLY equal servings of cauliflower! Seriously, once it is mixed and cooked, it is really good. AND the BIG PLUS, you have automatically CUT THE CALORIES, BIG TIME, but get to enjoy all the "Pasta Lovers Fix" like I need, accomplished! TA-DA!!!!

Quite often I'm looking for a quick healthy snack (often to go). If I don't have a piece of fruit or other healthy option at my fingertips, I reach for a granola bar or nuts. Having the veggies ready is a great suggestion.

I have carrots and celery on a tray (leftover from 4th of July). I have watermelon and strawberries cut up and ready to eat.

Daily Challenge:

Wash and cut up fresh vegetables, then put them front and center in your refrigerator.

How to do it
Today, set aside a few moments to wash and cut up fresh vegetables, like carrots, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini - whatever you like! Put the veggies into plastic bags or see-through containers, and set them right where you can see them in the refrigerator.

Why it matters
When you're hungry and looking for a snack, you may grab whatever is right in front of you - whether it's good for you or not. By getting veggies ready to eat ahead of time, you'll have a healthy snack right at hand. You can also use your cut-up veggies to speed up salad-making at the end of a long day.

Side Note: a friend gave me the tip of using canning jars and lids to put your cut up veggies in, expecially chopped up for salad makings. The jars help keep the veggies fresher plus they fit in the door of the fridge.

Actually, I'll most likely be posting these in the mornings.

Here is today's:

Try yoga's lion pose: Kneel on the floor and give a roar.

How to do it
Be king of your own jungle! Kneel on the floor (or on a folded towel) and sit on your heels. Keeping your back straight and shoulders back, put your hands on top of your knees and spread your fingers out. Take a deep breath through your nose, then open your mouth as wide as you can. Stick out your tongue as if you're trying to touch your chin, and widen your eyes. Finally, exhale - and roar like a lion!

Why it matters
Yoga can do so many things: help you manage stress and anxiety, increase your flexibility and strength, and improve your posture. By working on the muscles in your face, the lion pose can help keep your jaw muscles from becoming tight and reduce eye strain.

Note: for those of you with knee problems, do everything except the kneeling while sitting in a chair - preferably a straight-backed chair and not you recliner! :o)

DH & I went to the MOVIES! So, yes, I sat still, paid attention and LAUGHED! Laughter, I believe, is some of the best medicine out there! As your laughing, you are forgeting some of the hassles of our lives, and those ENDOPHINES are working overtime! The movie...."THE HEAT!" With Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock!

We normally are not big into going to the movies, but DH is trying to keep the "cabin fever" out. Yesterday, we drove and walked ALL OVER the three neighboring states! Keeping in mind, I can not ride for long, and the fact that we live within a few miles of CT, and RI, it was fun to drive, then get out and walk stores, shops, or whatever, then back in and "move on!"

When I work on my scrapbook journey journal... I really get lost in the flow. I have two pages devoted to this very idea!

"Discover what you love most and boost your joy in everything you do." by Amy Spencer

Ask yourself: Which aisle of the bookstore do I veer toward? Whether you find yourself in fiction, by the art books, or drawn to the travel magazines, it can clue you in to what passion you should be feeding.

I will work on my journey journal today! emoticon emoticon

Spend 15 minutes on an activity that completely holds your attention.

How to do it
Today, immerse yourself in an activity you like for a minimum of 15 minutes, focusing fully on what you're doing so that it completely absorbs your attention. A few examples of activities that may keep you in the moment: something creative (drawing, writing, crafts, singing, cooking, etc.), something physical (dancing, walking, or another type of exercise), or even the act of reading and learning something new.

Why it matters
Researchers have a term for when a person becomes so involved in an activity that everything else seems to fall away: flow. When you're in a state of flow, your entire being is truly engaged and you feel rewarded. Studies have shown that being able to achieve a state of flow is tied to increased happiness, so experimenting with this exercise may up your emotional well-being.

Summer is upon us and our schedules can get busy with vacations, outdoor activites and family gatherings. If you find that joining the month-long challenge doesn't fit into your busy schedule or you just like doing a quick mini-challenge, check this thread often throughout the month of July. We will be posting random mini-challenges that are quick to complete.

Let us know if you took today's challenge.

July 1st challenge:

Eat 1 food with folate or folic acid, like dark, leafy veggies; citrus fruit; or fortified cereal.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

How to do that:
Today, have one food that contains folate or folic acid. Folate is naturally found in dark green, leafy veggies; dried beans and peas; and citrus fruits and their juices. Many grain products like breads, cereals, and pastas may also be fortified with folic acid, the synthetic version of folate. If they are fortified, it will be marked on the label.

Why it matters:
Folic acid is important in the creation of new red blood cells, and research studies show that it may play a part in helping to prevent certain kinds of cancers. It also significantly lowers the risk of brain and spinal cord defects in a developing fetus.
