Click "Community" then "Challenge Central" then "Fitbit Challenge" (should be the first one listed, maybe?).

Or just follow this link: http://www.sparkpeople.com/fitbit/challeng

Thanks! I was doing much better and then did too much yesterday and had a bit of a relapse last night, but I'm feeling pretty good again this morning. My husband admitted he is a bit jealous of how quickly I bounced back and was able to eat real food again when he got sick first and still feels sick. Rightly or wrongly, I'm going to credit my FitBit with my quick recovery. If I hadn't built up my strength by doing as much walking as I've been doing since early November (gotta get those steps in!! hahaha), I don't think I would have recovered as quickly.

Sounds good to me, anyway. :)

It is a good thing to get back to routine! Yay!!

We've had stomach flu here. It started with my husband on Christmas eve so we stayed home on Christmas and avoided sharing with the family. It was a nice, quiet day other than the fact that he was very sick. Then as he was starting to recover, I got sick the day after Christmas. Just over 1600 steps logged running to the bathroom. Ugh. But I'm feeling much more human today and attempting coffee and thinking about toast or rice for breakfast.

Of course, I've fallen off page 10 of the Leaderboard now thanks to the flu, but my new goal for January is to stay on the Leaderboard every day. I love this group, and I love my FitBit! I don't think I've enjoyed activity this much before.

Good morning Fitbit Friends!!

My walking has been WAY off this past week while my SIL has been visiting and we've been doing both Christmas stuff and (yesterday) post Christmas shopping. Today my should be better - I need to get back on track TODAY as between eating too much and exercising too little my body is NOT happy!!

Have a great day everyone - and keep stepping!! emoticon

Today is supposed to be clear, but then more clouds Wednesday and rain moving in for Thursday.

Another milestone for me: 10,000 steps two days in a row! Walking around the neighborhood in the evening looking for Christmas lights is a good distraction from the exercise aspect of it and a good way to get in a lot of extra (for me) steps. :)

I'm going to work really hard and maybe next month I'll be at a point where I will show up on page 10 of the Leaderboard!

Just after I finished walking last night and was settling down to dinner, the bottom dropped out! It stormed a lot last night and is supposed to be raining today, but I'm determined to do what I need to do to keep my step count up, even if it means driving to a building with stairs so I can do loops from the first floor to the second floor on my lunch!

My goal this week is to be over 8,000 steps every day, and hit 10,000 as many of those days as I can. I just have to remember to stretch after extensive or energetic walking so my hip/IT band doesn't go bad. :)

Have a great day!

AMARILYNH: Glad you had a safe trip home! Travel is so draining, and then you get home and have to unpack and clean and... ugh. :) Wow--77 floors already??

DLDMIL: I'm glad you know you have a low-step day coming and can plan for it. I had no idea that Friday was going to turn into a short step day for me. I'm doing a lot of walking around town today (I've been to the recycle center twice, and the farmer's market once, and planning a trip to the grocery store next) and hoping that work tomorrow isn't quite so pressured.

I'm back home in Georgia (drove home yesterday - hence lower than desired steps.)

Today in addition to walking I've been cleaning house - being away for a month didn't do good things for my house (especially since Phil was here alone part of that time LOL.) As men go he's really quite tidy but there are some things I swear he just doesn't see (crumbs on the counter, dog hair on the rug). Plus I'm still working on unpacking the stuff we brought back!!

I wish flights of stairs were a part of our challenge - I have 77 flights of stairs so far and didn't even walk in the hilliest part of the neighborhood!! So far my knees are ok - I hope that continues!!

Its raining now so I don't know how much more walking I'll do today - time will tell. It doesn't really hurt my feelings as I'm feeling very tired.

Hope everyone is having a great (healthy!) weekend!!

ANNEMARGAR, I read that same article and agree. We need to move more, I have some relatives that are obese with medical problems and can't or won't move because they have bad knees. But refuse to believe that the knees and other medical issues might get better if they moved more and lost some weight. I can't believe that Christy is healthy at that weight.

Tess, congrats on knowing where and what you need to do.I know how you feel about having days where you hardly move at all. I will have 2 days this upcoming week (interviews all day) where it will be very hard to get to my targeted goal of 30,000 steps, I will have to rearrange my morning and afternoon breaks to be able to escape outside before and after all the interviews. I also may need to do the treadmill in the evening longer than normal.
Have a great week everyone

After my awesome Wednesday (breaking 10k steps), Thursday was more normal and then Friday was awful. I was pretty much tied to my chair all morning, then I had a four hour(!) meeting in the afternoon and had to work late that night. I didn't even break 3k steps or get in any stairs that day. Blah.

It doesn't take much and the weight comes back for me in leaps and bounds. I have to always be aware and paying attention. Those moments of inattention to how much I'm eating can turn into pounds really quickly. I have people at work ask me if I still do Weight Watchers and track my food. Well, yeah. How else am I going to keep it off? I can't afford to go back to old habits!

Read an article yesterday about the comment Barbara Walters made to Chris Christie when she was interviewing him - something about "could such an overweight person be the US President"? The article went on to say that being overweight does not mean you are not healthy (something we Americans believe). The article said that it is more unhealthy to be sedentary all day than overweight. This made me think about all of the extra walking that we do to get our FitBit points up. Getting off the train early, walking on the treadmill while watching the news, taking that extra morning walk to get the steps in each day. What we are doing is very important to our health! Keep up the great effort team!!!!

Although it was cold and cloudy here this morning, by afternoon the sun came out so I had beautiful walking weather. I'm hoping for more of the same tomorrow. Then Saturday it will be time to drive home to Georgia. I'll miss the Florida weather - not that I'm complaining as our weather in Georgia isn't usually bad when compared to the northern states.

Tess, isn't it sad how EASY it is to add back weight and how hard it is to take it off? I've put on a few pounds this month too so I need to get back to clean eating. The past couple of weeks we kind of let the 'vacation' mindset of eating sneak in - time to fix that!!

This will be the latest we've EVER decorated for Christmas - so I'll have to get on the ball when I get home. Have a great evening everyone!!

ANNEMARGAR, I am a empty nester and so I walk in the evenings after work. I technically never sit down once I get home. I try really hard to get out and walk on my breaks at work, 5 days a week (desk job), so I can get in 10+ steps at work and then walk the neighborhood, treadmill and walk in place while I watch the news (recorded). my steps at work depends on how many meetings I have during the day. I have been building up slowly each week since June 2012.

TESSLER65, congrats on getting back to spark people and finding a way to keep yourself motivated.

AMARILYNH, I thought our rain storm last night was going to keep me in but I made it out and back before it started raining. And this morning the storm was already on its way out when I left for work. I have been out twice so far for a total of 45 minutes and I love how fresh it smells after a rain.

AMARILYNH: Thanks for looking at my page! It's been a bit of a struggle lately and my weight has crept up slowly, a total of 10 pounds since June, but I got back into SparkPeople and bought a FitBit, and I'm back on track and down just over four pounds... sixish more to go!

I was surprised and happy that he'd noticed because I hadn't really seen much of a difference yet. Having others say something when you're working really hard is one of the best NSVs. :)

And I hit 10k steps yesterday for the second time! WOOHOO!! Maybe there's hope for me after all. hahaha

LOL yesterday I was wondering the same thing, Anne Margaret! I only got a little over 16,000 steps which is very low for me. It rained all morning and by the time it quit I just couldn't get in the mood. I'm REALLY a morning person!!

Speaking of which, time to go back out for my second walk. I must do better today - Dallas is way ahead of me!! I won't catch up, but I want to stay in the same TOWN, if not the same neighborhood at least LOL.

Yesterday I put in some extra steps - got of the metro one stop early and walked the remainder to the office. I then walked the mile to the PTA meeting (and back) to get in some extra steps. All of my extra steps got me to 14,000 steps - which is more than my usual 10,000. I don't know how the 30,000 step people do it!!!

My goal is to one day, someday, actually show up on page 10 of the leaderboard. LOL!

And I have to pat myself on the back once again: Last night I was sitting with my husband on the couch and I got up to get something from the kitchen and he patted me on the butt as I walked by and then blurted out, "Oooh, tight!" So... YAY FITBIT! All these steps and stairs are starting to show up as a tighter butt!

I think I can live with that. emoticon

My ticker reminds me that activity, fitness and good health are a gift I'm giving myself. How generous will I choose to be this month?

I can't keep pace with the leaders, but I have a small team where my goal is to stay ahead - and that's hard enough.

My steps yesterday were a little lower than usual (27,152) because it rained all afternoon. AND its still raining this morning. I'll walk in the rain when its warmer, but its 46 and windy... so I'm reading posts, blogs and articles with my coffee this morning and hoping the rain will move out soon!! This is the first day since I've been in Florida that I kind of wish I was home where I have a treadmill to use in an emergency LOL. Or I could use it as a de-cluttering day - my house needs that too!! I'm sure Saturday when we are leaving the sun will be shining LOL. But that's good too - better for loading up the car!!

Have a wonderful day everyone!! Keep moving!!

Okay - I am jealous of all of you with the stair tracker emoticon I work on the 5th floor of our building and I always take the steps. I get at least 10 floors a day - often more. Today I WILL get off a stop early from the metro and walk that extra bit to the office. I need to get my steps in today -- yesterday I hit around 11,000 which is over my 10,000 step goal. I just need to keep striving for a little more. Have a great day everyone!

I am blessed with year round walking weather too. I discovered this morning that if I take shorter, faster steps while on my morning walk/jog with the dogs, I log more steps (duh). I have very long legs. So now I don't feel quite as competitive with all you 30's, maybe my mileage is closer than my steps. I have already got 5 flights of stairs and the meetings did not start yet. I will be needing an hourly step break from that. Wonder if there are any around that building we will be in?

I spent 11 years in Southern California in my 20's and did some backpacking in the Sequoia national forest. At that time they leased meadows to cattle ranchers and sometimes my husband and I would be out there for a week or more and see No One, but the cattle and the rattlesnakes. And the trout that populated the creeks - yum

Dallas, I'd be willing to bet your grands will learn to love hiking! And since you are in California you probably have good hiking weather year round I'm guessing? Yosemite is definitely on our 'bucket list' of places to hike!!

Anne Margaret, I think getting your daughter started hiking now is an awesome thing to do!! I look back over my life and one of my few regrets is NOT having done fun exercise things like hiking with my daughter Brandy! Now she is struggling with her weight just as i have most of my life (she is 39.) So I'm hoping now that we are getting her boys interested in hiking she and her DH Kevin will catch the bug too!! But you know how that goes - adult children have to decide for themselves to do things.

LOL Leslie I love your plan to be twitchy during your meeting!! And I'm glad your feet are all better!!

Well, speaking of walking I'm off to walk. I'm going to miss these mild mornings and my flat walking trail when we go home Saturday. Not that I'm complaining - I'm just glad I live in Georgia rather than the northern states where they are getting slammed with snow!

Have a great day today everyone - remember to MOVE all you can!!

On my feet a lot yesterday plus a couple of walks with the dogs and I am still logging 13,000 something. I think I am a ways from ever seeing 30,000, but my scale is happy, dogs are happy, feet are not boiling anymore. I am going for 25 staircases today since I will be on campus where there are some. Long meeting today. My plan is to be twitchy the entire time.

On another note....I am having a terrible time getting my steps in this month. Not surprisingly, my weight is ever so slowly going up. Not sure what the weather is outside, perhaps I can get off the subway a stop early and get that little bit of walking before work this morning.

I would love to get my 8 yo daughter and partner out hiking. Our schedule has been so busy lately -- though I guess it is December. I found local group on Meet-Up that has beginning hikes scheduled. I thought if we went out with others they would see that I am not crazy and that other people go hiking and enjoy it :) Wish me luck :)

LESLIE871948, I can't type and walk in place either. I would love to have a treadmill and treadmill desk at work, but that won't happen any time soon if ever.

Marilyn, I am hoping that the more I take them out, the less complaining will happen. They were good sports and that is all I can ask. It kept us out of the house and out from in front of the TV.

The next 4-6 weeks are very busy for me at work, so we will see if I can keep up the 30k+ every day.

Its truly amazing what our bodies can do when we train them right!! One thing to remember too is be sure you have on good walking shoes - that helps a lot to prevent foot pain. Since I've been putting in so many miles I find I need to replace them quite often!!

Going to pat myself on the back here:

I just got my 25 floors badge! I never, EVER thought that would happen. WOOHOO!!! I don't know if I'll hit 10k steps, though, because it's raining today and I'm just over 8k right now.

We'll see how excited I feel about this tomorrow.... LOL!

Ha, DLD
I actually added 5000 plus that day, I often get 15000. Still. I usually need a rest day after that, where I get 10 or less. I am working on 13,000 today, and it is just 1 in the afternoon. Got 11 flights too. I just don't see me having time to do 30. I tried to compose an exam on my feet today to get steps while I worked and I cannot type that way. Need treadmill desk I guess.

LESLIE871948, emoticon on pushing yourself for 20,000 steps. I know how you feel about your body hurting and feet on fire. I have gradually built up to 30,000+ steps a day. Adding a few hundred each day or week, depending on what is going on, not an extra 10,000 in one day. Hope you feel better soon and will continue to get you steps in no matter how many.

ANNEMARGAR, I also park in the far corner of the parking lots and walk to the store or work and take the stairs whenever possible.

emoticon to both of you.

I have a funny story. I am 64 years young and in the 1970'2 and 1980's I got to over 360 pounds during a particularly long and drawn out set of bad years beginning with a divorce. I have this knee that was kicked by a horse in the late '60's. Anyway, I have my fitbit and got that first suggestion of 10,000 daily steps and that is pretty easy. I walk 3 dogs most every morning. I live in FLAT south texas and have not got access to stairs much. So last Thursday I am browsing around in here and see some of the goals other people have? And I say to myself, self, 10,000 is wimpy and you are No wimp. So I get up on Friday in a challenge mode and cranked out 20,000 plus steps and several (14) flights of stairs found around the campus where I work. Ha. Saturday I thought I had been run over by a Mac Truck. Nothing on my body felt good. The bottoms of my feet felt like they were on fire. And frankly, I lost most the weight by exercising and I am super fit. I don't need to compete with anyone named RockMan, or anyone else who gets that many steps. At least not today. I will getcha next year.

Absolutely a great thread!!! Wow - I have been striving for 10,000 steps a day and doing pretty well with that, BUT.....why not strive for more? If I can get off the metro early for a conference, why not during my regular workweek?? Hmmm....perhaps I just strive for 15,000 steps a day next week!! Thanks for the inspiration emoticon

I'm loving this thread!! :D

Thank you so much for the tips and explanation of how you both get your steps in. I'm getting some more ideas on how to slowly work up to higher step counts without injury. I have a problem with my hips and IT bands and that's where I notice issues first whenever I walk too much and don't stretch enough afterward.

Thanks again!

AMARILYNH, my name is Dallas. I finally got back from the hike. It was a good 4 mile hike, with lots of complaining from the 5yr and 10yr olds. The 12yr old and I had a chance to get a good talk in and get caught up on what she is doing in 7th grade. How they grow up so quickly, when I don't see them every week. But, will definetly take them on more hikes as time allows, complaining and all.

Thanks for the explanation, DLDMIL (are you comfortable sharing your name - I feel I know you since I see you walking with me every day!!) Being in CA totally explains it!! I really am proud of how much you walk given that you are working!! I'm trying for 30000 to 35000 average - its surprising how my body has adjusted to the higher mileage. I wasn't getting in that many steps in the summer - Georgia is too hot and humid!

I love hiking - you don't get as many steps in the same amount of time but it is SO enjoyable! I'll be doing more of it when we get home (we are going home next Saturday.)

I'm off to walk again - after doing less steps yesterday I'm feeling pretty good today!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

AMARILYNH; I live in CA, so it is the time difference. I am working on getting 30,000 steps a day. Sometimes it is difficult, but I also do them through out the day. Walk during my breaks at work and can get about 10,000+ on most days. Then after work I will walk on the treadmill at my apartment complex or walk the neighborhood to help get those floors in with all the hills. On the weekends when I have more time, I am trying for 40,000+ to see if I can get those new badges, depending on what is going on and the weather. It is great to see how everyone has stepped up their steps on the leader board. My Grandkids and I are off for a 4 mile hike, it may be difficult to get to 40,000 today with babysitting.

Tessler65, be careful when adding hills! One part of my neighborhood is hillier than the rest, and back in the summer, having made a goal of getting in 100 flights of stairs a day and being short on time (having slept later than usual and with the heat building up) I decided to get my flights by just doing repeats of that loop. Like a dummy I didn't connect the two when my knee hurt a bit that night, and did the same thing the next day. Big mistake!! My knee was hurting quite a bit before the end of my walk and has bothered me regularly until this month (spending two weeks in Florida's flatness seems to have healed it.)

I'm not saying not to do hills, just be careful of repeats without a balancing amount of flatter walking!! And do quad stretches regularly to keep your quads in good shape - my chiropractor said tight quads was aggravating my issue!!

Back to the subject of how I get so many steps, I don't do my walking all at one time. A typical day for me is to have a cup of tea or coffee, go out first thing in the morning for a 5 mile walk, come back and have breakfast, go back out for another walk (3-1/2 to 5 miles), come back in for a while, have lunch and go back out for another walk (usually about 5 miles). Depending on how I feel and what else is going on I may go back out in the late afternoon for another short walk. It is a LOT easier to walk 15 to 18 miles that way than to do them in one walk.

The other thing is I listen to audiobooks while I walk. When my sisters tease me about how much I walk, I tell them they sit on the couch and read, I walk and read!! I like my way much better!! Now that I'm retired I consider staying fit and healthy to be my full time job!! One I am LOVING!!

Hills! (Especially GEORGIA hills! Yikes!) That explains why I see a number of people with super-high floor counts. Duh! :) I live in mostly flat Alabama and the nearest two-story building where I work is two buildings and a parking lot away. Still, I make a point to use the stairs in every building that has them when I'm at work. Walk to the mailroom? Take a quick trip up to the second floor and back, twice if I do it before I hit the mailboxes and again after. I was really proud of my high floor count recently - I made it all the way to 15! :)

I'll have to remember that about hills and see if I can find some around here somewhere.

LOL DLDMIL I'm so happy to hear that you are having a hard time too!! You are kicking my butt - I go to bed (early!) in the lead and you've passed me again every morning LOL.

As to how I got so many steps early this week, first, I'm retired so if I decide to walk all day I can. Plus this month we are on vacation in Florida at the beach and its perfectly flat here - literally NO hills!! Where at home in Georgia if I walk 35,000 steps I'll have over 100 flights of stairs on my fitbit, here the only stairs I get are the stairs in the condo. So my body can handle several days of 35,000 to 40,000 steps here.

That said, yesterday and today I've felt a bit tired and cut back. I managed a little over 30,000 yesterday (by taking a nap in between walks LOL) but today I won't even make 22,000. I've discovered from Fitbit that I'm more competitive than I thought I was - but not at the extent of my health and well being!!

Still, we enjoy hiking and all the walking I've been doing (I've been doing a LOT since we retired 4 years ago) really helps in my enjoyment of hiking!! But I didn't just go out and walk 18 miles - I built up to it. Its amazing what our bodies and do when we train them!!

I also have to really work at getting my steps in when attending conferences. It is hard when you are stuck in a room with a lot of people. Way to go on getting in those steps.

Hey Fitbit friends. I just wanted to share how my Fitbit gets me moving. I strive for 10,000 steps a day which I can usually do with two 20 minute dog walks and regular walking around the office during the day. This past week i was attending a conference and found that I was lucky to get 5,000 steps in the first two days - I was devastated!! So....Wednesday I decided to get off the Metro three stops early and walk to the convention center. I scored 13,000 steps Wed, Thu & Fri!! Thanks to Fitbit - I got my but moving!!! Hope you all are having a great week!

Thanks everyone! I was surprised that I managed to break my personal daily goal of 7K today after yesterday's record high. I think I'm actually starting to see some progress since I'm consistently getting a 5K badge and more and more often hitting 7K.

I love my FitBit!

My ticker reminds me that activity, fitness and good health are a gift I'm giving myself. How generous will I choose to be this month?

LOL - Marilyn - Yes, I am pushing myself to STAY on the leaderboard, like on page 10, and I drop off sometimes. Congrats on staying on top of the leaderboard!

I finally hit 10k steps yesterday! I feel like I've been beaten with a really big stick today, though... :)

Yes, I agree this is about meeting your personal goals, and being healthy and fit. But, I personally like improving my goals daily and weekly, and my goal for the weekend was to see if I could push past the 40,000 and get the next badge. emoticon emoticon

Tessler65 ... I'm with you! I'm happy with my personal goals! That's what this journey is about for me, not competing with others to best them, but to meet my own goals and keep getting better, more fit. We'll do it! emoticon

I look at those numbers and just shake my head. I'm happy if I reach my personal goal of 7k steps in a day. I was so excited the day I went over 8k steps! Maybe one day I'll be able to consistently get 10k/day.

I know, how did she get 101,000 steps in three days. I walked all weekend to push past 40,000 steps each day. But, I can't do that on the days that I have to work, I am lucky to get 30,000 and that is a lot of walking in place at work and at home.
I do like the leaderboard, but at this point it will be hard to keep up the pace until March.

I just can't figure how anyone has 101,000 steps on the 3rd of the month! WOW!!! That's a lot of walking!

You can set up your fit bit account to sync with your Sparkpeople account at www.sparkpeople.com/fitbit/connect.a

Once you link your accounts, it should automatically transfer your fitness activities between the two sites. emoticon

Are you, like me, pushed to do more by your position on the Fitbit Leaderboard? I AM!! I'm feeling kind tired this morning but I'm heading back out to walk more - because I don't want to drop back in my position on the leaderboard!! How about you? Are you finding yourself working harder because of this tool? If so, let's all tell the leadership at SparkPeople that we want to KEEP the Leaderboard!! I love it!! Does anyone know how to get the word to the powers that be??
