If you're doing a wide-leg squat, you'll keep a more upright position.

If you're doing a more traditional squat, feet about hip distance apart and toes mostly forward, you'll find you will lean forward naturally as you sit back and bend at the knee and hip. In doing this, be sure to keep your chest lifted and do not roll your shoulders forward or up. Your spine should stay neutral.

The straighter you can hold your back while still keeping your knees from pushing forward beyond your toes, the harder and better it is for you. So if you can keep your body upright while doing squats, that's GREAT. Just keep an eye on your knees, making sure they don't go past your toes!

I don't think it is about being upright as much as it is being sure your knees don't move forward of your toes. I was told a squat should reflect the motion of almost sitting down, getting your angle near to 90 and moving upright again.

My challenge is bad knees and I have to be so very careful to actually make it upright.

In Slim in 6 Debbie does them upright too....I think it just depends on where you can stay up. I may try leaning forward now as I always FALL when doing squats and lunges. LOL

So, I'm looking at the proper form for squats on various sites, and I see that almost all of them involve bending at the waist. (So that your torso is essentially about 45 degrees off center.)

I'm an ex-dancer, and I've been doing squats with my torso completely upright, because it helps me balance. (Think plies in a really wide 2nd position, only with toes forward instead of out.)

Is this wrong? Is it just personally preference? Anyone know if the bending at the waist is necessary?
