We live in New England and maple syrup country. In my husbands family Saturday has always been baked bean night. Of course they call for white sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup AND molasses. Don't for get the slab bacon or salt pork. So I make them every 4-6 weeks and portion it out into reasonable servings and freeze. This way we are not tempted to over indulge.

How sugar is hidden on food labels
Check food labels carefully. Sugar is often disguised using terms such as:

cane sugar or maple syrup
corn sweetener or corn syrup

honey or molasses
brown rice syrup
crystallized or evaporated cane juice
fruit juice concentrates, such as apple or pear
maltodextrin (or dextrin)
Dextrose, Fructose, Glucose, Maltose, or Sucrose


To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps rather than one big drastic change. If you approach the changes gradually and with commitment, you will have a healthy diet sooner than you think.

If you use whole milk, change over to 2%, if you use 2% change over to 1% and if you use 1% try changing to Fat Free.

Use mustard instead of mayo on your sandwiches. 1 serving of Hellman's mayo is 90 calories and 1 serving of French's Grey Poupon is 5 calories with no fat. There are many Gourmet Mustards on the market today.

If you eat higher fat burgers (75%) switch to 80%, 85% or leaner

MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES THAT LAST:

Letís also not forget the emotional aspect of change, particularly when it comes to food. As Iím sure you are well aware, emotions play a starring role in decisions around food for the vast majority of the population. If you make small changes to your diet consistently, allowing yourself time to integrate the changes into your routine and become comfortable with them, you will give your emotional and physical body the opportunity to shake each otherís hand and sign a peace treaty agreeing to move forward together in harmony. Itís a much nicer approach than all-out war, donít you think? The emotional aspect of change is often the most challenging!

Hereís the other thing: often when someone jumps into a healthy diet very quickly, they tend to overeat on the densest healthy foods such as big bags of nuts, dried fruits, whole grains, beans, oils and gourmet raw foods to try to replicate the heaviness of the foods they ate previously. While these foods have a place in a healthy diet, over-consuming them is only going to burden the digestive system even more, and it certainly wonít support the reasons you probably got into eating better in the first place, such as for energy, weight release, lightness, to heal symptoms, etc.


By slowly making changes and transitioning at a pace right for you, it is more likely you will avoid overeating, feeling deprived or restricted, or experiencing unpleasant symptoms. You will be giving yourself the best chance to let go of physiological and emotional attachments so that when you do make a change, it feels wonderful and sticks with you!
