It's storming here with potential severe weather all weekend, but I'll fit in some indoor exercise later in the day. This morning I'm taking it easy after a grueling work week... sitting at the computer awhile to catch up on things there.

I'm in, too, Kara! Already walked 2 miles this am!

Not sure how many from this team are still active on Spark, but, I hope we hear from a few. I hope some will join us on the challenge. Like you, I am on many other challenges on other teams, but, it is fun to be on challenges with a starting Spark team. It is never too late to join in or start over with an exercise program.

Glad to hear things are going good with you. Catch you later, Kara! Enjoy your weekend!

Hi team members! It has been awhile since this team has been involved in an exercise challenge. What if we all try to complete at least 30 minutes exercise at least 3 or 4 times each week.

Anyone out there interested in making this start up team from "Sept.30-Oct.6th, 2007" active again? emoticon !!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I finally got to work out today! I went on a cruise over Spring Break and then came back and was sick for 2 weeks. Today it is official - I am back on track. Hubby and I went to the gym before work and got in 30 min cardio and 20 weight training. It felt great!

This month I'd like to reach my goal weight. Since I just got full-time hours at my job, it's not realistic for me to exercise 90-120 minutes every day or 6/7 days any more, so I set my SparkAmerica goal for April at 1800 minutes.

Today I walked outside, used the elliptical at the gym, and did my strength training at home.

My goals for April are 3o minutes cardio 6 times a week and strength every other day, or whatever feels right for my body. I don't want to over do it!

I also want to lose 2 lbs a week the month.

Great, CJ! The scale has not moved for me in two weeks, but I measured today and WOW! I was down over an inch in at least 3 places and down at least a bit everywhere. So I know it's working, and that the scale will show a smaller number very soon.

Just ate lunch... once I've digested a bit more, I'm off to the gym.

I'm still exercising every day! Today and yesterday it was nice enough --- a little slushy, but that's okay --- to walk outside. My dog is in heaven because she got to go out for a long walk with me two days in a row. Tomorrow looks promising, too!

When it's not such great weather, I've been going to the gym, doing strength training at home, doing some exercise DVDs, or some combination of those.

Today I did 105 minutes on the elliptical. I tried the fat-burning program and the cardio program for the first time, 35 minutes each, and did a hill program called Mt. Kilmanjaro for 35 minutes. The cardio program is pretty neat --- you input age and weight, the program calculates your target heart rate (80% of max). Then it adjusts the resistance so you get to that heart rate and stay there. If you get it more than a little above your target, the display tells you to slow down and lessens the resistance. The fat burning program was similar but your target number is lower (maybe 55% of your max).

At home I did 30 minutes of core strength training

I don't know why that is that strength training seems to be harder to stick to. It's helping me to follow the "Firm Up in 3 Weeks" plan.

Yep, more snow yesterday. Today we were supposed to get a "dusting", but nothing. Not sure if there's still snow in the forecast for tomorrow.

I'm doing great with exercise! Sunday I started this new program (more about it in my blog) called Firm Up in 3 Weeks. For cardio I'm mixing things up a bit more --- goal is 3 days minimum per week at the gym. On the other days, sometimes shoveling, sometimes walking, sometimes DVDs at home. No matter what the weather, I'm all set. There's always a plan B.

The neat thing is that it's starting to pay off. I'm already noticing differences in my body shape and a bit off the hips and waist.

That pilates class caught up with me today! Ouch! I didn't do any organized exercise, but we spent quiet a bit of time outside doing some much needed yard clean up. It was in the 70s, sunny and awesome today! I sat in the sun in shorts and a t-shirt and soaked it up!

Friday I did my usual gym routine. This morning I was starting my routine when I noticed there was a class starting up so I joined in. Turns out is was a pilates class. I've never done that before. I'm pretty flexible, so the pretzel poses were no problem. The balancing stuff was impossible! She was on one foot with her hands and other leg straight up! No way could I do that! I'm sure with enough practice I could, but I was afraid I was going to fall on my head! Any way it was a good 45 minute work out. Plus I did 17 minutes cardio and later took the dogs for a walk. It was finally sunny and 60 degrees here!

Yeah, my poor dog is bored, too. I've heard of dogs that run on the treadmill, but I don't think Alexis is welcome at the gym even under a guest pass, LOL. We do have room to play fetch down in the family room, but she is definitely eager for spring or even temps in the 20s and clear sidewalks.

I'm taking it easy today, getting over a cold I hope, and planning for February. Have aerobics planned for this afternoon.

I don't mind being inside either but I feel bad for the dog who needs his exercise. Today we are having 50MH winds and it is cold. Maybe I need to get him a treadmill. LOL

Jen,

Most days I go out anyway. I'm from here and used to winter. Since being out of work, I don't go out as much because I can't afford to shop/spend but I go to the gym, church activities, library. However, I'm more of a homebody than many people and am comfortable being alone, able to entertain myself with books, music, computer, my dog, etc. A day indoors isn't the end of the world, esp. today when I haven't felt great anyway. By day 3 I am crawling the walls usually, though!

My gym just added a massage table this week. I'm not sure if a masseuse has been hired or anything yet, but I'm sure info will be posted or announced somehow, soon enough. Even if it's extra beyond the membership fee, I think I'd at least try it, maybe for a Valentine's or birthday treat to myself.

That cold is scary! I saw on the warnings on the news that you could get frostbite in minutes! How do you handle the cabin fever? I guess you are used to it! I love warm weather and would never make it in the north! I went to the gym this morning and did something new, an abs class. It was great! Then I did my cardio as usual. Also, I had a massage today. I started getting them for a stiff neck a few years ago and am addicted now!

I have my first cold of the year, so am taking it easy today. So far I have done lower body strength training and some cleaning. It's too cold to go out (warnings and everything out regarding wind chill), but I do plan to do at least a short Leslie Sansone DVD here at home.

Jennifer, it's now raining here, too. Earlier in the day it was sunny and 40 degrees, though. I walked outside with the dog before lunch, then when it clouded over I went to the gym for a long, vigorous workout. And did upper body strength training at home!

We're supposed to get nasty weather starting overnight. If the roads are safe, I'll go to the gym again 1/29, but if not, plan B is exercise DVDs at home... and possible shoveling.

Today I went for a long walk outside with my dog. We had to celebrate two days in a row of great "walk outside" weather. I also did lower body strength training.

Like Jennifer, I'm planning a morning gym workout tomorrow, and hoping for another walk outside, too. It's supposed to rain, but maybe not until later in the day.

I exercised today! First I did 60 minutes of aerobics. Later in the afternoon, the sun came out and temperature in the upper teens, so I took my dog out for 35 minute walk. This evening I plan to do some core strength training exercises.

How's everyone else doing with exercise?

This week it's been so bitter cold that I haven't gone out much at all, and not to the gym, but I have been exercising at home. By Friday it's supposed to warm up into the 20's, so I will plan on the gym that morning. In the afternoon we'll be getting more snow for me to shovel! At least my variety of exercise will be there for this week.

I shoveled snow for 55 minutes today. It's great exercise so I don't mind. My dog even went back in the house before I did. emoticon guess he got kind of cold.

I know CJ I feel guilty for saying it's cold in Oklahoma!

FYI (from the history teacher of course!) The lowest ever recorded temp in the contiguous 48 States, was -69.7F (rounded off to -70F) at Rogers Pass, in Lewis and Clark County, Mont., on Jan. 20, 1954.

See, 19 isn't so bad! J/K!

I went to the gym this morning and got in my cardio and lower body strength training. I hit a new record for myself on the bike of an average speed of 17. I have been pushing myself a bit harder and realized I may have been getting lackadaisical. (Thanks SP for the spell check on that one!)

Anyway, hope you all are staying warm and toasty!

Wow, Katherine! Were you able to bike outside? It's stationary biking only here at this time of year --- too cold for the gym today. I haven't done Pilates really, but did see that Coach Nicole put up some new videos here on SparkPeople, including a short intro one, so maybe I'll work that in this week... at least give it a try.

So far today I've done cleaning and laundry and some strength training. I'm going to do some aerobics in a little while... to keep me warm if nothing else, LOL. But it's mostly a resting and planning day for me today.

My time of day for going to the gym has pretty consistently been mid-morning, approx. 9-11 AM. Maybe I should standardize my strength training so that I'm more motivated to do it. I'm just not as "into" it as I am the cardio, although I realize it's just as important. Doing it first thing in the morning could work, since I almost always do it at home. Yeah, maybe I'll virtually join you at 5 AM, give that a try this week.

Originally, I'd planned on going to the gym today, but it's just too cold to go out. Yesterday I went out to WW meeting and then to the farmer's market with my husband --- but it seemed to take all day to warm back up and I was in bed asleep by 8 PM! So I've decided to stay home today.

That said, I haven't quite decided what to do today for exercise. Leslie Sansone's Walk Chart calendar says "no organized walking today --- Mind, Body, and Soul ... reflect and rejoice!" So... I know I have a load or two of laundry to do with Robert (my hubby). We were also planning to clean our family room (his 1/3 is his den, my 2/3 is library and home gym --- the fireplace is exposed on 2 sides and divides the room), so that's unorganized activity if not formal exercise.

Maybe I'll take today to reflect, rejoice, and plan exercise for the week ahead. I have a few DVDs I haven't tried yet ... could watch those through once, which makes things easier when I actually try them for the first time. It might also be a good day for some basic yoga, pilates, or extra stretching/flexibility exercises.

What are your plans for today?

Sounds like you guys are staying busy! I was so sore from the chest flys on the ball! Ouch! Today I did ab work and cardio. Maybe my arms and chest will be recovered tomorrow! I would love to take a walk outside, but it is too cold for me! I need it to be 65 degrees at least! I may do mall walking tomorrow or go to the gym. I should do both after the way I've been eating!

Jennifer, I have a ball at home and love using it! The only SP exercise I haven't tried (and probably won't) is the one where you put the ball on top of your weight bench, then your body on top of the ball. Think I'll wait until I have health insurance to try that one --- it looks like there's some potential for injury/fall with that one. Some of the ones where you put the ball between your legs (like Clamshell Crunch) are unwieldy for me because I am tall and have the biggest size ball, but could do them with a smaller one.

I am by far not the most coordinated person and have some balance trouble since a bad car accident (not inner ear but weak ankles and malunion of bones in the pelvis). It did take some time to get used to the ball but doing so has improved my balance and coordination. Just sitting on it for 30 minute stretch, then back to my regular computer chair, then ball does wonders for your posture and core. If you have lower back pain after sitting awhile this is wonderful for that.

Today I did 30 minutes of snow shoveling with hubby. It's been coming down steadily since then, so I will need to do this again, either after lunch or just before it gets dark. The wind has picked up and temperature keeps dropping.

Besides shoveling I did 45 minutes of aerobics. I'm taking a rest day from strength training today, I think.

Jennifer, I was awake at 4 am yesterday, too! I had an early dr. appointment and then lots of work projects to wrap up yesterday, so I wanted to get an early start! I was worn out by evening, though, but I did walk a Leslie Sansone walk video, and did my ST, as I posted,... today, I am going to try to get an outside walk in as well. (I did not get up until almost 7 today... ha! Slower day at work today.)

I woke up at 4:10 AM today ready to go! I waited until 4:30 to get up, just to be nice to my husband! I tried some new exercises today. I did some of the upper body dumbbell on the ball exercises. I felt a bit self-conscience since everyone in the gym could see me on the exercise floor. Those balls are fairly unwieldy! However, I'm pretty sure people aren't that interested in what I'm doing! I'm not sure I was doing them right, but it had to do some good! I also did my stretching and cardio. How did you guys do?

Went to the gym again today --- used elliptical, stationary bike, and treadmill. On the treadmill I started the training program for running a mile without stopping (4 week training program featured in a Spark article this week). At home I did strength training, focusing on the upper body today.

You guys are doing emoticon

I went to the gym yesterday and today. I took the weekend off and was still a little stiff and sore Monday! I like knowing that I am building muscle!

Take it slowly at first, Ravyn, you are still recuperating from that bronchitis. You will be back on track soon. Kara's ideas are great... just sort of start at the beginning again, and I bet you will move along pretty fast.

I walked today.. a Leslie Sansone walk and an outside walk.

I am trying to focus on getting back into my exercise routine, then will add back in the eating/portion control. I still am buying healthy foods and not eating as much junk. Also snacking healthier too. Some habits are hard to break!! LOL Sent hubby to store last night for milk and bread, he came back with multigrain bread and skim milk. Before spark it would have been wheat bread and whole milk!! LOL

I have gotten in a 1/2 hr walk with resistance today!! Dobermann tried to run the entire way!! LOL

Ravyn,

Maybe it'd be a good idea to set 3 fast break goals for a couple of weeks and focus on those, like you did when you first started SparkPeople? That often helps people get back into things without being overwhelmed.

Yes, today is the day. I changed my appt. to tomorrow from Wednesday, so hopefully I'll know something tomorrow, if I can't coax her out tonight!

emoticon Kara & Katherine!

I did well today ... walked to one of my LS dvds (the 5 mile advanced one) early this morning, and then a 2 mile walk in the neighborhood as well this evening.

Katie - How are you doing? This is your due date....correct? We are excited to hear the news!

Rayvn - A good way to get back to some cardio would be walking as Katherine mentioned. You can go at your own pace and build the time back up slowly. Just a suggestion.

Big exercise day today for me! Went to the gym where I spent time on the elliptical, recumbent bike, and the treadmill. At home I did strength training for my core, an aerobics DVD, and some cleaning with hubby.

Ravyn, walks are always good. If you still are feeling a little weak then take it slow.

Yesterday I did pilates for 30min. and went for a walk.

My goals for this week:

At least 14 miles (challenge on virtual team)
Strength training 3 days
Train for 16K on bike

I could use some suggestions for getting back into my exercise goals. I was exercising 7 days a week cardio for 60 minutes and strenght 3 days a week. After having been so sick lately, I have kicked myself back to stage 1!!

Today is my first day back, doctor finally released me!!! emoticon I do have the dog to walk still, but walks are much shorter due to the cold weather. We also have a stray Doberman Pincher (full size/grown!!) that is staying with us while we try to find the owner. I guess since she drags me that I am doing strenght training daily!! emoticon It is comical to watch me walk my Min Pin and the Doberman Pincher at the same time!!

Anyway, thanks in advance for all advice.

What did you do for your body today? This is a thread to tell everyone what you accomplished today!

I spent time with friends and family and walked around shopping!

What are you goals and how are you meeting them?

Right now I'm just trying to stay patient and in shape for childbirth. This week is my last chance to go into labor naturally!

My goals are:

I. 30-60 minutes of cardio at least 6 days a week (some days I complete more cardio minutes. My dr. told me in order to lose weight, 60-90 minutes a day is what I should do.)

Each day I complete a Leslie Sansone video walk (great for when the weather is not cooperative for an outside walk), and I also usually take a walk outside or a hike on the weekends.

II. Strength training 5 days a week.

I met my goals yesterday & will also walk today.

(This was for my body and mind!) I walked around Babies-R-Us for two hours just taking it all in and chatting with random people!

I was thinking you could use your goals for exercise as your own personal challenge.

1. Walk dogs 30 min 2x/day
2. Do core exercises daily
3. Alternate upper- and lower-body exercises every day.

What are you goals and how are you meeting them?

I am logging EVERYTHING and taking part in EVERY challenge I can!

Today I did 70 minutes of aerobics (Leslie Sansone's 5-Mile Advanced Walk DVD, which has some strength training built in).

My goals: gym 5x week, Leslie Sansone DVD 6x week, and Strength training 3x/week. Sometimes I substitute other things like walking outside, for example.

Today I gave granulocytes and had an IV in each arm, so afterwards (for the rest of the day) I was supposed to take it easy. Other days have been bigger exercise days.

Yes I did get my pilates performer together and used it this morning. I love it. Spent 30 minutes doing pilates and went bowling. At least I will have one strong arm. LOL Will give goals Monday since that is when I start my week.
